This should result in a dismissal with prejudice.

I feel like it should too, but correct me if I'm wrong, sadly it's apparently totally legal. And part of the way lawsuits are used as harassment and intimidation.

Pretty sure they can sue for discovery. And Google and Samsung legally have to waste time coming up with potential evidence. Fortunately for them, they can afford it. And fortunately for all of them, smaller companies can't so are often bullied in to settling.

It's gross and it's exactly what I'd expect from them but sadly it just might work.

When I see Epic Games in headlines now I just roll my eyes. I'm getting really sick of the complaining from this man especially about THIS. An option to disable this exists and by default people don't need to be installing crap from random places. If they do I'm fairly sure they can figure out how to get around this.

Sure, he may be looking out for Epic's interests, but that doesn't change the fact that these lawsuits Epic has been filing have been and will be benefiting all developers.

All companies just optimize for themselves, but Epic is currently the only real counterbalance to the Apple and Google duopoly, so regardless of what the motivation is, a side effect of it is that it benefits all customers and developers.

The counterbalance is Linux, BSD, and the Free Software movement. They are the only ones left that make software for the users. And they don't have any money.

Sweeney is just another form of what's wrong with all the companies that want to control software distribution. He's just trying to stay in that game.

Valve is closer to a counterbalance in terms of commercial entities, but they aren't nearly as vocal.

Epic’s endgame is to get their own app store on all mobile devices, where they can host other developers’ apps and charge them a commission, in addition to keeping 100% of Fortnite revenue for themselves.

They are not doing any of this to benefit consumers or empower developers, nor will their actions have the desired effect. There is zero logic to forcing users to have to use your own App Store in order to access an app, which is by all accounts a worse user experience in every conceivable way.

To those supporting Epic, you are all cheering on the wrong horse here.

A dismissal with prejudice means Epic would have to pay the attorney fees of Samsung and Google here.

The real issue here is that Epic is partially owned by China which has a vested interest in pursuing these lawsuits for X,Y,Z reasons. If this was a publicly traded company he would have been ousted a long time ago.

If only Sweeney had a fraction of this heat for the closed systems Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo enforce on their respective consoles. Getting him to criticize those companies is harder than getting Elon Musk to criticize Saudi Arabia or China.

Honestly, nobody is buying that security pretense for a second. What absolute BS.
Nobody is forced to use those alternatives. Whoever feels uncomfortable downloading apps from alternative sources can simply opt to not do that, simple as that, isn't it?

oh please, this is so false.

when Fortnite leaves the play store (they knowingly violated rules that got themselves banned), kids are forced to download Fortnite from external sources. and then this happened https://www.mcafee.com/blogs/mobile-security/fornite-android-app-vulnerability/

"Has no evidence but is hoping to find something"

Tim Sweeny is ****ing scuzzbag in every sense of the word. As usual he wants to have his cake and eat it too.

He has done absolutely nothing to better technology
Counterargument, Tim Sweeny is the lone sane voice speaking out against the en*poop*ification of technology. Between the astrix is a different word but Google it if you want the definition. As someone who currently owns and uses an S24 Ultra I fully support Tims calling out these companies poor behavior.
Samsung and Google both pull the same Apple level behavior where they believe they can get away with it under the guise of protecting people.
Technology companies used to introduce life changing solutions that were seemingly magic in some ways. These days they put their efforts into discovering ways to charge for things that were previously free. They often offer no real value except that they block, buy or ban any alternatives. Standing up for Google, Samsung or *gasp* even Apple is a fools errand of the highest order.

If one person is an *******, they’re an *******.

If everyone’s an *******… maybe you’re the *******.

Epic is a terrible company run by terrible people.

Say what you want about Apple, they definitely could have taken all this regulation from the EU better, but Jesus does epic cry. And cry and cry.
Except it's not a person. It's a few of the wealthiest companies on the face of the planet who stand to make billions more by engaging in the very behavior Tim is describing.
Epic isn't "crying" as you say. They've taken direct action and are continuing to take action against what they perceive as wrong.
Crying is what is happening on these very forums by people defending these unfathomably rich overlords.

Developer here, it doesn't benefit us at all. Tim's constant nonsense is hurting the good app stores.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said that he did not have proof that Google and Samsung had colluded on the Auto Blocker feature, but he is hoping to find evidence during the document discovery process. He also did not ask Samsung to make Epic Games an authorized source for games.
so use tax dollars for that proof? this is a very shady and unethical company and it continues ...
