All you have established with your boss comment is that monetization is a higher order problem than development and that there is a lot of value in tools, languages, and APIs.

Seems like your really arguing that Apple should charge more than 30%.
It is. 30% is fine, probably even 50%. The crappy tools made me leave, not the lack of potential employers.

Honestly that’s a cop out of a reply. I don’t have to just force myself to love every part of the product. If there’s something I’m unhappy with then I’m fully entitled to voice it. Otherwise why do forums exist? So we can all just agree and nod along with each other about how perfect every detail totally is? How disappointing
Go ahead, but Epic isn't winning that lawsuit, nor should they.

Oh really? How about xCloud? How about root access? How about right to repair? Are we just ignoring parts of posts that are hard to jam into our narratives?
Ok then, Sony Playstation 5:
  • Doesn't let you repair your own device
  • Doesn't let you install any software you want
  • Gives you no root access
  • Disallows any kind of gaming competition like xCloud
  • Takes a 30% cut of playstation store revenue (plus a cut of sales in other channels like physical media)

If you do not like their policies, do not buy their products. It is not hard to understand. There are other platforms that provide you want you want. Stop trying to ruin the platform many of us have chosen specifically because of its locked down nature.

If you’re ok not having a voice while getting swindled by a corporation all the power to you bud. Don’t get upset because some of us are actually willing to voice dissatisfaction with things that need fixing. Or do you just nod along to anything they hand you? How depressing. The platform doesn’t belong to you any more than it does to me and you’ll just have to deal with it. If you’re interested in an environment where you’re sat in a circle in agreement with every single other member then do us both a favour and reach on over to that ignore button and go back to nodding bliss

Having a voice is fine. But I do not think having the government come in and say "You cannot create a closed system" is just wrong. And it will set a precedent for MANY areas - game consoles for one.

If enough people HATE what Apple is doing, speaking with your wallet is the best. Move to Android. Apple will then have two choices:

  1. Change how iOS is to get people back
  2. Let the iPhone die entirely.
If this ends up going badly for Apple, and we can sue people by making a market SO NARROW, it will have disastrous consequences. "iOS Apps" is not the market, "Mobile apps" is.

I’m allowed to own an iPhone and desire a change in how the app market operates. I don’t agree with how gaming consoles are set up either which is why I’ve built my own gaming PC.

I’m real sorry you disagree with me so intensely on this point but you can go ahead and stop asking me to get an android phone because I won’t lol

What good does it do? I can scream all I want, but does that mean AMD GPUs would ever get CUDA cores? If you don't like the Apple environment this much, just get an Android. They are actually much better phones IMO but I prefer the locked down ecosystem of iOS so that is ONLY reason I use iPhones.

That example is horrific and introduces patented hardware sharing between competitors. The point I was trying to make is that it’s my owned hardware and I should be able to repair it how I like or install on it what I like. I’m not spending less money for a locked down experience, I’m spending full price on hardware that feels like it barely belongs to me.

I’m sorry I cannot help you come to terms with the fact that someone on the internet disagrees with you on something.

Why do all your replies need to end with a personal attack?

Same can be said about our TVs, Xbox, Playstation, Microwaves, and pretty much any other device. You can repair them yourself, but the company should not have to bend over backwards to support it if you mess up. I know several people that have fixed their game consoles, but if they made it worse or was unable to fix it, the company is not forced to accept it.

Jailbreak your iPhone. Problem solved. If you need to open up your phone, you own it and you can do something like this:

I don't see Apple's lawyers suing iFixIt for tearing things apart. They own the hardware, they can "attempt" to fix an issue. But Apple is not obligated to fully support you if you massively break things and go "I tried to repair myself, but here are the parts that I need fixed".

Lol it’s not a personal attack as much as it is just pointing out that I can’t go a single reply without you getting real mad and posting soliloquies into why you think I’m wrong etc etc

I’m never changing my mind on this so you might as well move on or hit the ignore button

I think this way, too. There were people that said they were jailbreaking their iPhones to “send a signal” to Apple that they didn’t like their practices. I reminded them that buying the iPhone, REGARDLESS of what you do after “sends a signal” to Apple that “I like your phone enough to buy it!”. They’ve already got your money. If you use the App Store, great, but even if you don’t, that iPhone in public is still free advertising for Apple.

Companies most readily change what they’re doing based on their sales. What we’re seeing here is folks that realize that not enough people think the way they do. They KNOW not buying won’t work to force Apple to make any changes AND aren’t principled enough to stick with their guns and not buy Apple products. They’d like VERY much to get more people to think like them, but that’s not going to happen either because most folks don’t care about those things. So, you see, it is YOU who are the problem. YOU who won’t band with them to not buy Apple and force the changes they KNOW are required, so those folks will always antagonize you.

It’s not too much different from folks who, I kid you not, state that people making “apologies” for Apple on MacRumors is why Apple won’t make a change. As if Apple is ABOUT to make a radical 180 on something, HOWEVER a few posts on MacRumors gives them cover so then they don’t do the thing. They see you as the enemy because they see what you posted as “an excuse for Apple to do bad things” when you meant it as “the way the business world works”.

I have a voice, and I am quite happy with the state of things. I purchased a set of devices that work the way I want them to work, largely because of the choices they have made. You keep telling me I do not have a voice because I will not advocate what you want. You tell me I am getting swindled but I cannot see how. I picked this ecosystem and its approach, not because I think Apple is cares about me, but because I think Apple’s business interests and my personal interest align.
Don’t get upset because some of us are actually willing to voice dissatisfaction with things that need fixing.
What bothers me is your unwillingness to accept that the changes you want forced on me (and everyone who agrees with me) by the government would fundamentally destroy the system I prefer. You say “fixing” and those who agree with me read it as “destroying”. The changes you are demanding would affect everyone, including those of us that oppose them.
Or do you just nod along to anything they hand you?
Nope. Unlike you, I do not buy products I do not want.
How depressing. The platform doesn’t belong to you any more than it does to me and you’ll just have to deal with it.
I would have no problem with you advocating to Apple to make a change, nor you trying to organize a boycott to get Apple to make a change. My problem is that you (and most people on your side) advocate for the government to come in and make a change that they vast majority of Apple’s customer’s do not want.

Trust me, I do not respond to you because I expect to change your mind. Anyone who believes that they are so superior that anyone with whom they disagrees cannot understand that they are being swindled, clearly is not going to be persuaded. My responses are targeted to those trying to evaluate the argument without having decided before hand. I want them to understand that there is a real down side to these changes even to those who do not want them.

It is not a situation (as some have argued), that gives some people extra choices, while leaving everyone else untouched. It is a situation that takes something away from those of us that prefer things as they are.

As an example: Do you think that if Facebook could force people to use the Facebook App Store that had no privacy protection, that they would not do so? I have reasons I need to use Facebook, and I like that Apple makes them get my permission to track me on other sites. If you had your way, I would no longer have that option, as Facebook just would not offer it.

That is just one small example.

If you want a different set of choices, move to one of the platforms that offers those choices.

I’m sorry there just isn’t enough time nor interest to read all of this. if you find yourself constantly in disagreement with my viewpoint and it bugs you this much there are alternatives to paying any attention to anything I say

We do have a voice…we vote with our wallets. I continue to purchase Apple’s products exactly because they are locked down and provide a great user experience. If I didn’t want a locked down product, or it didn’t meet my needs, I wouldn’t buy it and would purchase one of the many alternatives. I don’t have an Apple Watch because it doesn’t meet my needs….I didn’t run crying to the government to get them to force Apple to make the Apple Watch just like my Garmin.

Safety and security in a well integrated ecosystem. That is why I buy their gear.

Curious if your issue is battery life, Ant+ or something like Running Dynamics?

I would love something with much longer battery life, but am not willing to give up the UI and ecosystem integration. I for me, I would want over 8 days, so that I could charge it every Sunday or something like that. With my Series 6 I get over a day, including using it for Fitness+ (which I have really enjoyed adding to my workout routine).

It’s a combination of battery life and the sheer number of performance metrics recorded with a platform that can enable analysis over an extended time frame. I just can’t use the Apple Watch to record my daily activity and then my sleep patterns when it needs to be charged for a number of hours every day. The Apple Watch is a great smart watch with some fitness functions. The Garmin is a great fitness/ outdoor watch with some smart functions.

My Tactix Delta is currently showing 82% battery life with an estimated 18 days usage left. I can charge my Garmin for the 10mins that I am in the shower at the end of the day and and it’ll keep the charge above 90%. I charge in this manner every 2-3 days. When it’s fully charged, I have 22 days of estimated usage.

And a useful feature but not a deal breaker….NVG compatible backlight for when I’m working on our rescue helicopter.

With the Series 6 and a high power charger, you no longer need to have on the charger for several hours every day. It is not getting you to 22 days, but with about 20 minutes a day, one can go for several days. Better than it was, not yet perfect.

As Ray Maker says: “The Apple Watch is the best watch for 23 hours a day.” meaning all the time that one is not training. :)

Not there yet. :) Not sure it will ever be there, but maybe. The rapid charging does make it much more interesting, but still not in the same league.

I will ask one of my friends, but I thought one of the faces was OK for that, but I am not sure to which kind of night vision he was referring.

A little off-topic but my Fitbit lasts 4 days. Is it because the battery is so big that I feel like I'm lugging around a power generator on my wrist. Nope. I don't use GPS, AOD, reduced vibration etc. The (latest) AW is an extension of the iphone and is in constant contact with the phone and is always monitoring something, which is why battery life is "not as good as some of the competition". Depending on your use case that is either good or bad.

Indeed, and this is one of the reasons I sold my Apple Watch. It replicates so much of the iPhone that I may as well just pull out the iPhone. I don’t need Pinterest or messages on my wrist.…I do need to be able to read notifications though. I need on-board and offline topographic maps, multi-day battery life whilst using GPS, buttons - not touchscreen that allow usage with gloves or wet/ sweaty hands etc etc.

Right tool for the job and all that ☺️
