The only thing that causes innovation is competition. Apple should be looking to make the App Store more enticing to developers rather than beating them with a stick for leaving.
Nobody is beating anybody with a stick. The point is the App Store is so heavily regulated anything apple does could be construed as anti-competitive.
You only need look at the stagnation in OS development caused by the iOS/Android duopoly to see what I mean.
What stagnation? That’s just an opinion. And there is no legal duopoly.
Their last big competitor was Windows Phone. This caused Apple to drop skeuomorphism and Android to finally tidy up what was a very messy OS.
I thought apple wanted a complete change for iOS 7, which was the cause of a flatter UI.
They were shaken by a competitor and we all benefited.
Windows on an iPhone sounded good, but I’m not sure how many android or iOS users were ready to jump ship. But you place a lot of credence that windows phone was disruptive. Not really sure about that.
Every OS 'innovation' from them both in the last decade has just been whatever they could pick from the carcass of WebOS.
You place too much credence on the carcass of webos.

UK maybe but they will have to force others to open up their platforms in the US which means MS, Sony and Nintendo will join the fight.

Apple is already being investigated by the DOJ for anticompetitive practices. They just got a big win with Google, that I think will hold, and I suspect they will be able to do the same with Apple.

Tech companies have pissed off Washington, on both sides of the isle.

I believe this has always been what it was all but also host other developers' apps and charge them a profit. He is not doing any of this to empower developers or benefit customers.

No, he just wants the ability to actually compete. If he host apps but only takes 10 percent of costs that is direct competition which benefits the developer and maybe also the customer if it makes the price lower.

Knowing Epic this is the first step and the next one will be exclusive store deals and free app of the week like they have been doing on PC for years.

Competition is better for everyone in the long run, no matter which companies involved. Microsoft will probably also come with their own store at some point. They didn’t buy King for nothing. They also have heavy hitters on mobile like Minecraft, Call Of Duty, Diablo Immortal and the whole King catalog. If they can keep 100 percent of revenue I am sure they will at some point and also have a GamePass Mobile tier.

I suspect the UK and US are headed for similar regulations. The EU is not a serious state but a global regulator. Others will follow. Investigations are already underway in the UK and US into Apple and others.
As I like to point out OJ was also guilty but we know where that landed. Of course it will be a while before all of this plays out.

I am going to assume that IAPs made in the console versions of Fortnite incur a 30% cut to the parent company. So it’s just Apple that Epic is against paying money to? 🙃

The choice was always there. Epic knowingly and wilfully broke the App Store rules. Was Apple supposed to just close one eye and pretend like nothing was happening?

It’s exactly that. 30% to those platforms owners. Worse for them for Sony. Sony has what he called in the Epic/Apple trial a Most Favored Nations clause in their contract. So if you play primarily on PlayStation, but make your purchases on the iPhone, Sony gets their cut still. He then went on to defend them, Microsoft and Nintendo for having 30% cuts. Hilarious.

And it most likely will go nowhere, but even if it did it will be years. Google has way more marketshare in the search business, poeple seem not be able to understand you have to have 90%+ of the market. They will need to make a law that there can't be closed platforms and good luck with that.

They haven't been for a while now. Why would now be any different?

Smartphone "innovation" is all but dead, Apple isn't innovating, Google isn't innovating, Samsung isn't innovating.. Oh AI? wooohoo..there are a dozen apps you can download today that will do the same thing..

And on iOS, no innovation by 3rd parties unless you bow before Apple and kiss the ring.
So innovation for the biggest tech market is dead? Okay. But yeah I’m not apple but not sure where an App Store could go. Apple already built an influential digital marketplace. Where to go from there.

Not so sure, but time will tell. They(DOJ) have to win their case.

They all better watch out though.

Do the Macrumors editors know that other games exist beyond Epic and Fortnite?
If you read the article, there are details that explain why it is so important.
I've never played the game and don't care about Epic but... it's a big deal. Kinda the greatest deal in gaming of the last few years. People used to resell iPhones with the game still on. And gaming is the reason why many kids decide what phone to buy and need the latest model for good GPU performance. And once they're into Apple, they don't leave easily. And since most markets have been saturated, it's important for the iPhone in general that they get new customers from new generations.
Also, the Epic feud mainly about Fortnite was one of the main stories in the whole "Apple V. EU and the free market" saga. Which led the biggest change for iOS and the App Store since... iOS 2, 16 years ago.

So... yes, other games exist but they're not remotely as important.

And you know what stops innovation, over regulation

Where can i block it…. :D
"haha, I'm so funny! + emote"
It's "blocked" by default as all external shops. You can't install it if you don't literally allow it in the setting during install attempt. People! If you wanna be Apple simps do it in more intelligent way! I have Apple stocks and some of my ETFs also feature Apple but I don't behave in this ****ing way!

It won’t hold. In 5 years or so when it’s all settled and absolutely nothing real happens tech will have moved on.

it's the game that no one seems to care about anymore. it's more of "hmmm, I'm bored. but there is Fortnite. let's see what's new." and then delete it

Boy, I wish I could create a game so popular and with such gigantic earnings. You must be the richest person on Earth if you treat such successful business story like it's nothing.

Wouldn't an Epic Games Store be a monopoly?
Does your house having doors make it a monopoly? The closest thing to near monopoly in PC space is Steam. Ofc China kinda makes things look weird and disturbes the bigger picture.
