The most irritating thing about all of this is that I was playing Fortnite with my kids on iOS when Epic decided to no longer support updates for their product.

I don't care if they sue Apple but, for no reason at all, the really forked over their customers.

Even better that they made a cute 1984 video to rub it in the faces of all of us who are just trying to get our kids through the pandemic.

not sure about your stadiums but similar wouldn't apply here for a couple reasons:

1. Stadiums aren't often the ones supplying the concession in most cases. it's 3rd parties who just rent the space. But they don't pay a "per transaction" fee. just their set rent.

2. For stadiums that run their own concessions and do not allow outside ones, this would be a moot argument.

3. MOST large stadiums allow you to bring in outside food/drink especially for medical reasons. they may have some limits on the types (no alcohol) or packaging (nothing that can be thrown on to field/pitch).

But it's not a monopoly as it's not outright banning anything. And in addition, most Arena's/Stadiums are luxury. You can also almost always catch the event outside of the stadium itself, thus not incurring the cost of inside the stadium fees

Listen: making analogies is one thing but literally inventing them and unable to explain why it's an analogy because it's not easily relatable doesn't make your point say what you think it says.
Here is an article that shows it’s not rent they pay but they pay a percent of gross margin around 50%, that’s before profit btw. 50% is a lot more than Apple is charging so no I would say my analogy fits pretty fine.

Newsflash. When you buy something at the grocery store, it's marked up 30-55%. That's why and how the store is there.
Grocery store markup averages 12%. Ironically the same as Epic Store and Windows Store. However the AppStore is more then a store which is what makes the store a bad analogy.

So, if I'm not mistaken, I have to subscribe to xbox gold so my kid can play "free" fortnite on that platform. Does anyone know if some of this kicks back to Epic?
Unless I am mistaken you no longer have to have a Gold Sub to play free (to play) multiplayer games.

No there aren't. It's a mathematical impossibility. Each additional master signature that you permit is another attack vector.
What I meant was: The argument for the AppStore is security. If there were an independent organization that issued standards that all App Stores needed to follow and if AppStore were to breaks rules, they could just get wiped off the device remotely. I get the impression that you're not willing to see the advantages of different models.

Depends on the marketplace. Groceries tend to have lower margins but high volume.

The average margin in retail is over 50%. But I've seen 100's% on some products.

Yep, that always works out in the consumers best interest :rolleyes:/s

How about Epic spend a couple of Billion R&D on creating a mobile device that they control (or choose not to) ?

That is true, didn't think about that. I guess FaceBook could do the same. Personally, I would like to know what other smaller developers think about the 30% charge. A few years ago, Epic was cool with the AppStore, what changed?

Isn't it wrong though that Apple or any other AppStore for that matter prohibits developers from mentioning that they can also order from outside the AppStore? Doesn't Spotify have a point?

Apple, just allow sideloading apps for everyone who want it do. Just add thousand checkboxes “Are you sure to install this untrusted danger app”. I want to do with my device that what I want

I have never been to a store where they tell me I can buy a product for less elsewhere. I'm pretty sure most retail outlets have contractual requirements saying that you can't put on your packaging that the product is cheaper elsewhere, at least for the product sold in their store.

Not if the reason they are making those sales in the first place is because of the IAP's.

Thats what the 30% is for. And depending on the app, its more beneficial than launching a massive marketing campaign trying to drive traffic to a website to get signups and sales.

Netflix does just fine without IAP's, so does Amazon. Spotify does the bare minimal marketing and relies heavily on subscriptions being generated in-app.

In the case of Epic, it almost completely relies on spur-of-the-moment micro transactions from within the App. Without those in-app insta-sales players would probably be considering things in those couple of minutes like: "do I really need to dress like a banana".

Is it wrong for a vendor to put up a sign in store saying that it is cheaper to buy it at a competitor’s? Would you market for your competitor where you work ?

edit: looks like ksj1 replied while I was typing 😉

I can't wait for the Apple TV+ comedy show based on this to be developed once Epic loses.
