That has to be the worst thing that anyone has ever said, the single dumbest line about how "you're the product". They sell... ad space. They use your data to target them at you. Google targets you with ads that companies pay the to put on their space.

Nike doesn't know who you are, they don't get that information.

Dude. Even Google fans accept the fact they are the product and don't deny it. (And that is even before we learnt that Schmidt was a lying ****itty ****)

How did this (and similar ridiculous comments like these) get so many up votes.

I would bet my first born that Samsung is paying a bunch of college kids money to up vote comments on this board.

I feel sorry for your first born. smh.

This is also likely one of the reasons Andy Rubin got removed from his position. Android has been a dismal failure for Google. They have completely lost control and can't find a way to monetize it.

And we still are expecting just only reason for that hyperbole. Time before was the mantra "Android will fail because of fragmentation", the new mantra is Google has los all the control over Android.

Either way, I don't see anyone complaining because their Android phone has malware but I do see it for iPhones on this very board.

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1381277/

That's a change of subject. And not what I was talking about. So you found 1 thread on MacRumors; declared people are talking about iOS malware but didn't find/cite any for Android — so that should surely mean that it is a non-issue?

AllthingsD.com has a funny story on schmidt.

Happened to me too and i never opened any virus-containing mail attachements or something like that.
Happened always on the same website...

No, not a porn website, but a computer news website.

Turns out it was the ad provider that provided the page with ads that sometimes redirected people using iOS devices to porn pages, targeted at mobile device users.

Oh - not only iOS users - also some people with Galaxy WhateverS^^

Statement by the website where it happened to me...

Thread at XDA-Developers about this problem - with the thread creator using an Android device...

Question (18 months ago): "Steve, why don't you offer turn-by-turn navigation and vector graphics in Maps App?"

Steve Jobs: "You'll need to discuss that with Google."

.

BTW, how would they know the ages of users? I think you just kinda soiled your own punch bowl. Why are they following people around the internet as well? I think you can file those under personal information. Next you'll try and say that 'someone else does it, so it's ok for Google'. Snore.
How are you insinuating they know people's ages? When you sign up for any of Google products (at least mail and YouTube) you have to enter your age.

Fragmentation is the reason Google lost control of Android. But that's beside the point. The reason Android is a dismal failure is because it's not making them any money. Especially if you count the $12.5 billion they paid for Motorola they are deep in the red with Android.

The idea was that they wanted to get into mobile ads but it has become painfully obvious now that ads on mobile don't do nearly as well as they do on desktop. The amount advertisers are willing to pay Google on mobile is tiny compared to on desktop and on top of that, there is far less real estate available because of the smaller screen sizes so Google can't show as many. Even worse, is people spend more time in apps on mobile than desktop and ads aren't as welcome there as on websites.

And then there is the fact that people just don't respond to mobile ads as much as desktop ones. Especially the cheap/low end smartphone market that Android caters to. Poor people in rural China who get free / cheap Android phones (often without data plans) to replace their feature phones don't respond to home loan and car insurance ads. Whodda thunk it???

Google's recent earnings report show that this large move to mobile is eating away at their desktop profits. Android is a big part of that and it's a failure. I don't expect it to last much longer. Certainly wouldn't be putting any resources into developing new apps for it anymore. It already has shown to be not very profitable for developers.

Fragmentation is the reason Google lost control of Android.

Still waiting just one proof of that. I will be very glad to know how can someone lose control of a GPL/Apache project.

The reason Android is a dismal failure is because it's not making them any money.

Source?

Especially if you count the $12.5 billion they paid for Motorola they are deep in the red with Android.

$12,5 billion - $3 billion in assets - $2,35 billion Motorola Home to Arris = $7 billion moreles for 17.000 granted patents, 7.000 pending patents and a handset division.

We look to Nortel and the price paid and Motorola deal is not a bad deal

Android is a big part of that and it's a failure. I don't expect it to last much longer. Certainly wouldn't be putting any resources into developing new apps for it anymore. It already has shown to be not very profitable for developers.

Wishful thinking?

Oh my god, then there'll be 9 billion Android devices in use by 2018... WOAH!

Seems you ignored what i clearly said: Android devices are always lagging behind in the adoption of the most recent version of Android.

Of the 750 million Android devices activated there are only 16.5% running Android 4.1 and more than 50% aren't even running Android 4.0, the "Finally less ******"-release.

16.5% of 750 million = a bit less than 125 million devices capable of running Google Now.

When Google releases Google Now on iOS, it will most likely run on any iOS 6 device - that's more than 300 million, including sales in this quarter the number will reach 330 million or more.

The day Google Now is released on iOS, more than SEVENTY percent of the devices capable of Google Now are iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch.

That should make every Android fanboy ultra-sad, because it show's that iOS is still the dominant mobile OS.

Not in mumbojumbo market share, but in all points that count, like actual usage as a smartphone, instead of usage as a feature phone or in this case - features available to the most people.

Whatever feature Google will anounce for Android 5.0 during I/O 2013 - they will be available to the less than 20 (actually, 10 million is more likely) million people who bought the Nexus 7, Nexus 10 or Nexus 4 til then.

iOS 7?

100 million users a week later, 300 million after 3 months.

What part of 450 million ->new<- devices this year running version 4+ and another in 540 million 2014 don't you get? They are pushing more devices each year than combined total amount of sold iPhones.

Unless apple comes up with something, iOS is not only being overtaken, but run down by a train.

I dont feel Im a product. You know what your getting with Google. Your getting a free..as in no money payment..service. And in return they collect data. Big deal. So you know where my phone was today at 5:15. I hope some of you never hand over your credit card to pay for something or shop on line. I would imagine your info is out there without Google tracking you.
Also, heres the kicker...if you dont want to use the free service in exchange for whatever data they collect...dont use it. See, you have an option.

People should always concern themselves with what data is being collected. But I agree with you. People should also read contracts/eula/etc they sign personally or digitally. They don't. Or most don't.

He "took a shot" by saying what is true and every other app developer says?

Context matters. "He took a shot" because what he implied that Apple was the hold up for an app they hadn't even submitted. He took advantage of a commonly held notion to paint a false picture to discredit Apple and promote their largely review-free Play store. Not that difficult to understand.

But no different than any CEO or exec being questioned about what they do vs a competitor.

I really fail to see how people are so up in arms about it.

How many of those will run Android 5.0 by December 31?

I would say very few, but it's much more fun to also mention that Samsung has released the Galaxy S II Plus a few weeks ago, is selling it for 5€ less than the Nexus 4 in Europe and guess what - It won't get Android 5.0!
That's what life with Android is like.

How many iPhones sold in 2013 will be able run iOS 7 by end of December?

100%!

Even if Google added the most awesome feature you can think of to Android - the huge majority of Android users won't be able to use it until a year later.

And please explain how earning 70% of the profits of ALL mobile phone makers is "being run down by a train"?

In a few years, many of the companies that are making smartphones right now won't exist anymore, because there's only Apple and Samsung making profits.
HTC can't make enough of the HTC One because they lost their tier one status and have to wait for smartphone parts, because other companies are more important.

The "huge marketshare" of Android isn't like that because people using Android devices because they like Android, but because that's the cheap piece of plastic they got for free.
I think Firefox OS is an even worse OS than Android (All power to the cellphone companies!!!), but if it's cheaper for the providers, they'll sell those instead.

If Apple were to make a 199$ iPhone (unsubsidized) - that would be the end of Android winning in marketshare.

But they aren't interested in that kind of marketshare, because if you sold a hundred million devices with a profit of not very much per device - you would earn only "not very much" money in comparison to the money they're earning now, but would trash your margins, something that Wallstreet finds even worse than earning "only" 13 billion dollars in profit per quarter.

So, Apple will be run down by a train that has derailed, crashed and burned.

They'll get a flesh wound, nothing more serious.

I really fail to see how people are so up in arms about it.

Except he wasn't being questioned about what he does vs a competitor. He was questioned about when his product would be available.

The reason people are/were taking issue with what he said is because he took a shot at Apple instead of answering the question. On top of that, he was being dishonest. Pretty simple to understand.

The fact is, this is typical Schmidt. I don't have an issue with people calling him out on it. I also don't mind Phil getting called out on his comments, either.

What is puzzling to me, is why people try so hard to defend these guys when they make stupid comments.

Why do you get yourself so worked up for! If you want an Android experience with instant updates, then get a Nexus device.

Many people understand with Android that unless you get a Nexus device, you wont get updates ASAP and I personally don't see that being a problem. Its only ios fans such as yourself that see it as a problem.

Will ALL iPhones be running ios 7? Will ALL iPhones have all the features of ios 7?

Judging from the posts from that thread, it does not seem to be the same issue. AFAIK this has not been resolved by OP.

Or how about: "We're submitting Google Now to Apple's App Store and hope to have it out to users soon."

That would be simple and honest, but that's not what Schmidt did. He was playing games with a cheap ploy trying to give a bad impression of Apple.

Goal? To dispute the notion of saintly Google?

That wasn't your goal at all. Using things like bad photos of a person, calling people fandroids, and the use of  as part of your argument basically paints it as a troll post. I never suggested Google was saintly. If you think Google's use of insinuative executive speech is worse than others or just bad based on its own merit, that's fine. You pointed to a behavior that you dislike then invoked similar behavior in your own post.

I got it. I just wanted an excuse to say spiderboats, and you gave me one. :p

There's nothing wrong with that. I'm glad I was able to indirectly help a good cause:D.
