I’m patiently waiting for apple to quit EU market in 2022 since they don’t like these new regulations. Eventually turn iPhone into US exclusive if other regions follow the suit and introduce their own legislations similar to EU ones.

By then, I believe nationalists in US would rejoice once again, as those iPhone would be built, sold and supported exclusively in US, while everyone else uses a variation of android.

Seems another way out (not totally but somewhat) for Apple is to just limit sales within the EU.
I don't believe they can go after them if they don't meet the sales criteria. Limit device sales within the EU and make sure they always get the newest products a year later. :)

EU is the second largest market. Apple isn't going to abandon all that cash.

The messaging inter-op is very bad and going to be a nightmare if actually attempted. But again, Apple shot themselves in the foot by not just slightly loosening App Store rules when world governments started looking into this.
How did Apple shoot themselves in the foot regarding messaging? WhatsApp was actually a thing BEFORE iMessage, Apple just provided a service that works just as well as WhatsApp for iPhone users. WhatsApp was never going to share their encryption keys with Apple, and they’re not going to now.

Another thing, how the F can the EU go after 10% of World wide sales? Who the F do you think?!?!
They want the money you make everywhere? I'm done with the EU. I would have loved to visit many places in Europe, but hell to the no now.

This shows that people behind EU legislations are no real tech guys and dont understand how giants work in this segment...probably old people behind EU that thinks like in the 80'
You can tell this legislation was actually crafted with input from tech guys (or girls). Many of these items were not things politicians would ever come up with, and all relevant IMO.

Actually, China is the second largest market, and growing much faster than the EU. The EU also has the lowest margin of all the regions and that’s going by the CURRENT rules. These rules may reduce the EU margin even further.

You now won't have a device which is locked down and controlled by Apple. So one less choice than before.
Yup, I’m now slowly getting the options that I had on the Mac a long time already, what a terrible choice to be pro consumers. 😄

Maybe the EU wants to be rid of the iPhone? If, in a few years, the EU promotes a EU branded Android fork, then we’ll know why :)

Literally almost NO ONE uses Safari man. NO ONE. Even on Mac it has a tiny share of use.

Is it? I doubt it. But given Apple has yet to quit EU market given all the previous legislations, maybe they still want EU money?

Either way, quitting EU market also saves operational cost as well cause they can just layoff people and stop paying rent on those illustrious apple stores, some of which inside historical buildings. Maybe that will not be a bad trade. Who knows.

Not under the current ”leadership.” Under the former, sure—the US had attained energy independence for the first time in more than a half century. Which just goes to reiterate my point that conservatism is better. 👼

I’m sure you will vote for conservatives. Let’s see what Will happen next year.

Just reading the typical suggestions that Apple will leave the EU market is entertainment enough for days for sure. If Apple would take half of the business advice from the typical MR loudmouths they’d be out of business already. They will - like any big tech company affected (let’s pretend it’s just Apple affected here) play nicely with the regulations - running a business in China for decades thought them as much.

You got any proof of that?

Lets see. Apple could make iOS and the iPhone so open as to basically have to become Google/Microsoft with that level of support. Because they are being forced to make everything work with everyone that wants to play. Secure it just the same, and having to incur all the costs associated with that, with no real new revenue model that will come from it. Other than increase the price of everything.

OR

FU EU.

All Apple has to do, in truth is to not change anything. I doubt the laws can be retro active. So it will have to apply to anything going forward (from the time the law takes affect). So, sell them old ass iPhone 13's forever. :D

And if for some reason this law is retro active. I'm sure Apple will go to whatever court exists in the EU over it.
And if that doesn't work, well. FU EU. We out!

Anyone who thinks this is all about benefiting consumers doesn’t understand the rules of the game. This is about weakening encryption and making it easier to track and control every user on the planet. EU regulators lust for total control over absolutely everything. That’s it in a nutshell.
How exactly?

"This includes making messaging, voice-calling, and video-calling services interoperable with third-party services upon request" does not equal the death of encryption. No developer would ever do this anyway.

One, What's APP (or any services for that matter) would never want to do this because it would mean they'd have to create end-to-end encryption with iMessages thats different than their. They'll keep their loops closed. This is more about playing nice with other open standards like RCS. Two, if voice/video/chat app wanted to bastardize their encryption, they would likely be creating a separate channel for for Apple, and another for Google, plus their app-to-app protocols.... which again, NO ONE is doing that. You can also build bridges in between that translate back and forth... but no one is going to do that. The effort and development needed would be insanity and not have any return on investment.

It’s growing, but not as fast as China.
And, something I didn’t know, is that the Europe unit includes:
“European countries and India, the Middle East, and Africa”

So, even the 20% profit value I was using earlier is for ALLL of those, not just the EU countries. I guess now I need to see if anyone has the revenue numbers with the EU separated from the Middle East, Africa and India.
