EU Competition Chief Tells Apple Not to Use Privacy as a Shield Against Competition

Well, in most of the cases, yes.
There were rarely malware viruses that made a user get it without their fault acting.
E.g. Blaster, LoveLetter was well made, but usually Windows users with a bad Antivirus and very questionable browsing practices was the ones that got em. And Antivirus is like a Airbag, it also won’t always safe you in a car crash, you still have to drive wisely.
Most third-party anti-virus software would also hog down your system performance and open you up to adware, and open other doors unless you got their additional software to lock those doors, and so on.
It is practically like driving with an open parachute behind your car.

Well, yeah in the days of spinning hard disks there was not many performant AV software out there, specially not the Norton crap that was advertised everywhere and widely bought by normal Windows users. When needed i used ESET NOD32, this one never dragged my System down. Now a days it’s no problem anymore, and the buildin Windows Defender does a very decent job.

These morons are trying to undo Apple’s layers of protections one by one, to great detriment for the consumer.

Also, they’re actively trying to limit consumer’s choice, by forcing everyone into the insecure Android paradigm.
Sideloading an app doesn’t affect the entire Apple user base, it only affects that one person. And nobody is forcing you to sideload apps. Everybody in this thread angry because someone in the government is finally making sense.

I really don’t understand all the counter arguments.

Nobody will be forced to use alternative app stores so your data will not be compromised if you don’t use this option.

That what this all this is about. Giving users a choice. Just like you can basically buy every product out there in other stores at different priced and sales. Sometimes it seems people over here all have a large quantity of Apple stock. Cause all this is about profit. Nothing else.

Most users are not sufficiently informed or have the means to discover the degree to which their privacy will be compromised.

Look at this congressman. He probably has no clue what a web app is. He could have known but he was so biased and pushing his agenda he interrupted Tim Cook every single time. That is an inquisition instead of a hearing.
Apple may have blown it when they closed their web app Store (which existed in the iPhone 1 days). As competitors can easily offer their own web App Stores.

You‘re already doing that with every messenger app that accesses your contacts, such as Whatsapp. Since you can‘t (or won’t) MDM your friends‘ phones, all that data is accessible to third parties without you consenting to that. That is why Facebook has all our phone data no matter if we use Facebook and/or Whatsapp.
I don't use messenger apps and don't even use the Facebook app. I actually use FB's desktop page. It makes a difference.

But it doesn't just affect one person. It affects every other person that one person has been in contact with.

A "bad app" could leak details of your contact lists, private messages or photos between you and hundreds of other people, which in turn leads to them getting spammed or conned in the future. It's not just about you.

It's a bit like suggesting that getting rid of the police only affects criminals.

Not surprised a govt official thinks privacy doesn’t matter. They are jealous of what Facebook and Google know about you. So of course Apples desire to protect privacy means nothing to them. Politicians, bureaucrats - the dregs of society.

Profits is Apple’s real reason, privacy is secondary.
Well than it’s a beautiful thing if they serve us in their efforts for money. I also do my job not for love of my customers but love of feeding my family with money. It’s amazing that money helps Apple do what serves me best.

It makes no difference, FB and WA get your data because of people who know you using those services, and syncing your contact data with them. You can't prevent them from getting your data by playing safe on yourself only, the same as you can't prevent getting hit by a car if they're drunk.

Again, App Store does not create security and privacy, the OS does. No sideloaded app (that already exists through developers/testflight) can get your data outside of their app unless you allow them to.

Apple should just sell two versions of the iPhone. One has access to Apple's App Store and the other is wide open and doesn't. Customers decide which one they want. If you want Apple's walled garden and Apple's watchdog over privacy, choose the App Store version. If you want to just install anything, you get the open version but with no access to the App Store and Apple doesn't monitor what applications do. You have to buy your software from online vendors. Problem solved.
How would Apple force apps to follow that? Any app of significance is going to demand you sideload and so now if you bought the walled garden you have no apps. Sadly the choice is Android or iOS.

Again, that is simply not true. There are a wide range of additional controls that Apple can implement through the App Store.

You just made the best plea for one apple governed App Store. Users don't have to be afraid. They are safe.

That windows defender actually let ransomware through on my windows pc.

Let's just call it what it is. Lazy, un-educated, lack of common sense, and least but most descriptive, sorry spoon fed users/losers. Users that blindly and most pathetically rely on a corporation to secure their data deserves no security IMO. Never let some corporation decide what is in your best interest of your security. I secure my data and that is how it should be. The fact that apple corporate believes this mantra of they know what's best for users, best shows they lack any wisdom for security in the first place.

Instead of educating users to make them smarter they rather push this privacy and security fantasy. This has resulted in gullible/incompetent users that can't even critically think about the most basic, simple security protection measures. Apple has shown by there own track record of hacks, malware, and bad apps, that they are no better than any of their competitors.

Google project zero team and even the DEF CON conference has shown don't believe the hype when companies spout this type of stuff. The best person to secure my data and my privacy has always been myself. I don't blindly rely on others to do it for me.

Did it change? No. In my region cars are over 5k more expensive for the same model. I was negotiating and one slipped his tongue 'But we agreed to demand at least'. There you go. All local dealers had made price agreements. And no, no use contacting local government officials.

They didn't fool me. I jumped on the train and bought the same model much cheaper.
ps You still can't ask a VW dealer to install tires bought through Amazon.

Like letting devs access your photos, contacts, files, location, health data etc without user prompt? Please. They can allow you to allocate more RAM, get access to advanced hardware features and more, yes, but nothing that grants them more access to privacy and security impairing subjects.

Sandboxing offers protection. However on a side load store thieves can create an app pretending to be your bank. Bye bye money.

That is scam and you know that will never happen with default settings as you can already see on macOS. If the app is not signed by Apple, that scammy app from an unverified developer will never set foot onto a user's system. On macOS, you need to manually disable SIP, allow installation from unverified sources as well as right-click an install file to even get the option to install it.
People who go to these lengths are fully aware of what they're doing and what they are installing.

Btw, every app is sandboxed

Oh apple must still provision profiling while another store takes the profit? I think I will hire you. You don't get paid but I am sure you don't mind.

That scam wouldn't make it into the App Store.

Wait, why is an European Union Chief going to have a ‘long 4th of July weekend’? 🤨🙂

How come a Chief is automatically a man? 😛 The EU Chief in question is a Danish woman called Margrethe Vestager.
Well, you know how stereotypes are. People assumed someone saying something so incredible stupid, ignorant, and hostile to the common people must have been a man. But thanks for reminding everyone women can be elitist monsters as well.

This is why we cannot have nice things.

After this it will be the PS5 as so the PS6 will need to cost $800 and the platform will die.

Apple is doing well and everyone wants some of that pie. Users want to make Apple change instead of just switching to Android phones (which are amazing and have everything they want). People just cannot accept things and must ruin in because in their mind it will be better for them.

You misunderstand me. If the developer is not verified and its app is not signed, it is already hard on macOS to get the app on your system.
