So the EU will compensate people who have their phones destroyed by cheap cables from China? Will they compensate people who have property destroyed when cheap cables melt and start fires? Complain all you want about MFI certifications but at least it guarantees that the cable will be robust enough to handle the draw from the device.

Bruh, all the expensive cables are from China. Anker, Apple OEM, etc.

The difference is not where it’s made, but how much you fork out.

This is the problem with them creating a law that enforces a charging standard, it hasn't even been implemented yet, and there is already issues. The law said nothing about charging speeds or limitations based on anything. A company could say, yes it charges with USB-C, but charges faster when the color of the cable matches the phone.

How is forcing USB-C ruining Apple products?

i have magsafe duo

so when i have an iPhone with USB-C and travel, i can't just unplug my magsafe duo and plug the lightning into my iPhone for fast charging, i have to swap out the cable. either that or I buy a new magsafe duo with USB-C

my razer kishi plugs into my iPhone so i can game with a controller via lightning. i now have to buy a new kishi with usb-c?

how is my life easier when i still need a lightning cable for airpods/trackpad/keyboard/mice/third party accessories?

i suddenly need to replace every single lightning accessory to reap the primary benefit of usb-c and that is to only carry that cable.

i have many functional lightning cables sitting around that i keep just incase i lose one. suddenly i need to build a surplus of usb-c cables (which BTW are confusing since not all USB-C cables are the same).

But it's not.
  1. Person buys cheap charging cable.
  2. Fire is started.
  3. Person sues phone manufacturer for causing a fire.

You just made up that scenario.

First of all, the cables I bought are Monoprice brand — arguable THE most reputable cable manufacturer.

Now, not everybody will buy cheap cables from reputable manufacturers. I’m sure that people will buy cheap cables which are dangerous! And that’s why there have been warnings over fake Lightning cables which are prone to starting fires. Just because Apple has a proprietary connector, doesn’t mean that they’re immune to dangerous knockoff cables.

Who in their right mind would sue a phone manufacturer for a fire started by a third party cable? What lawyer would take that case?

So why invent something if the EU is going to limit how it can be used and forces you to be just like everyone else. I know they won't do it but I'd love to see Apple take their equipment off the EU market. I wonder how long the users would force the EU to change its rules.

Moving from EU to NA made me realise how much consumer protection I had a privilege to get when being in EU. Here in NA its shocking how badly the consumer is not protected. Starting with warranty to delayed flights etc. Its a mess.

I wish EU was in NA too. Maybe called NAU :)

All of us would benefit

EU policies are very socialist, that wouldn’t fly in America. Maybe it will when millennials and younger become the overwhelming majority.

Where would you put it?
This is what we need.

I could see Apple making iPhone with a Thunderbolt port. It would still work with USB-C but it would be better with an iPhone cable, just like AirPods versus non-Apple Bluetooth headphones.

One can buy cheap lightning cables now... and for years now. Here's one for $2

Cheap USBc cables will cause no more fires than cheap lightning cables. Hindered USBc (or Lightning) cables will not come with any insurance to cover burned down houses either.

Consumers should know better than buying cheapest possible cables, chargers, etc. Yes, it may take a few fires from time to time to keep the general public aware of the risk of "cheapest." There is no way to legislate or MFi stupid. A few learn the hard way, the press talks up the lesson, and many others will pay more than cheapest to avoid making the same mistake.

For example, I wouldn't buy that $2 cable.

Limiting speed is just fine. For instance, it could only support USB 2. The common charger legislation doesn’t address that. Limiting USB PD charging capabilities would not be fine.

Perhaps Apple could agree to an outside standards body that certifies cables. You don't want to be running that much current through a cheep cable. At the same time, I understand why the EU does not want Apple to have a monopoly.
USB PD already handles that, though, and complying cables have chips in them already.

I really have to give a big thank you to the EU for trying to save us from proprietary cable mayhem. Wish we had similar consumer protection laws in the US.
Really? Because they tried to pull this before with Micro-USB. And if they succeeded then, we'd still be stuck with Micro-USB and would not have USB-C/Thunderbolt/USB-4 today. This is actually a terrible thing. We'll be stuck with this connector for a long time, and innovation will be stifled because of it.

Also who plugs-in their iPhone anymore? I sure don't. MagSafe, AirDrop and Bluetooth anyone?

You are joking aren’t you? Even the new Apple TV has a usb-c port.

macbooks and iPads have a USB-C port. so what?

Apple could have changed this port with iPhone X

nope. at the time they still needed to sell entry level iPads with lightning because of the apple pencil 1 that requires lightning. updating the iPad to use apple pencil 2 would make the entry level ipad more expensive at the time and many cannot afford that. plus usb-c was still not ubiquitous. accelerating lightning death and accelerating usb-c cable purchasing is bad for the environment.

having all apple products use USB-C except for entry level iPads makes no sense.

You are joking aren’t you? Even the new Apple TV has a usb-c port. Apple could have changed this port with iPhone X then everyone would have been prepared for the change by saying something like this new iPhone is the best we have every made & it now deserves the most efficient port.
Lightning is a better designed plug and a better use of hardware real estate.

People seem to forget that Apple was actually one of the designers of USB-C, one of the first pushers of USB-C, and likely the biggest input in the design of USB-C.

In fact, USB-C's design is awfully similar to previous Apple designs like the power port in an older Mac mini. Apple just took it off their design drawer and offered to it the paupers who were struggling with USB-A and micro-USB:

In any case, the Lightning port continued being the most efficient and robust port for the iPhone. If Apple had updated the standard to support the same speeds and power specifications of USB-C it would completely be the better port, but more expensive and proprietary so basically the same as the iPhone is to Android, same reason why Android (and Windows) will always have more marketshare.

Bruh, that is why I specifically said "cheap cables from China", as in the $2 ones on Amazon, etc.

That is a very good point. Someone needs to forward this to the EU as well. Yes, we’re halfway to 2023 and this exists. This is the problem!

I agree it's ridiculous. However, ever since the first time I used a Mac trackpad I never looked back. I have a feeling there are not a lot of mice around the Apple Mothership.

Maybe they'll finally fix it with the new Mac Pro and tout it as a feature.
