I'm aware, but I suspect those who don't understand Apple hasn't endorsed every app on the App Store outside of "doesn't have malware" might also not get the difference.

You have to install an alternative marketplace, on purpose, to get access to this

It's not something one would stumble into or accidentally install while thinking they are "protected by Apple", etc

I don't have a strong opinion on this one, outside of Apple shouldn't have to offer alternate app stores in the first place, but that shipped has long sailed in the EU unless Big Tech can convince POTUS that scrapping the DMA is what the EU has to do to avoid the wrath of tariffs.

Very different topic - let's definitely not go down that route in here 👍

Except Apple isn't allowed to put up warnings, per the DMA. But cede you the point that it's unlikely casual users will stumble into this one (Well, except teenagers who don't know better - I suspect they are the prime demographic for this app).

I do think there is a difference between "using Safari to access a website and using Apple's intellectual property to specifically serve this type of content; particularly when I suspect a large swath of the general public thinks that Apple has "endorsed" any app on the App Store.

(And yes, I understand using Safari to access porn is also using Apple's IP to access porn, but I think there is a difference
There’s a difference just as there is between gaming consoles and iPhones.

Gaming consoles are specifically designed (and purposely limited) to serve content approved by the hardware manufacturer.

Smartphones aren’t - they’re designed to serve all kinds of software and content.

There's a reason adult stores ID children everyone, this material is illegal for them minors. Children exploring themselves doesn't mean we need to supplement it with the most hardcode vile content imaginable.
they have access to safari, they have access to all the worlds porn... in my day we had to just artfully put our dads VHS back in the cabinet 😂

Battery life using this app is probably better than accessing it via safari. UI is probably nicer too. Not like there's zero reasons for this thing to exist.

Do people actually consume this...content...on their phones though?

👉 Wait… did MacRumors just change its headline and remove the “Apple-approved” adjective? 🤔

Funny, given how that was an accurate description and Apple actually did approve the app.

Illustrates the point how ridiculous the premise (and requirement) of a device vendor and OS developer having to “approve” each and every software app - and media content - running on such a general-purpose platform really is.

Page 517 of Isaacson’s bio:
"You might care more about porn when you have kids,” replied Jobs. "It's not about freedom, it's about Apple trying to do the right thing for its users."

Steve's argument was valid back in the early days when iOS didn't have such strong parental controls. But now days, kid's phones are locked down pretty tight and there's no chance that they're even going to see adult content on the App Store, let alone download something.

These days it's really more about Apple just not wanting "trashy" stuff on the App Store, and not wanting to be arbiters of what is and isn't acceptable content in various different jurisdictions...

Apple also ensures that apps are functioning as promised, but sideloaded apps don't have user protections and are not required to adhere to App Store content rules and can distribute pornography, or feature other prohibited content like hate speech, weapons, tobacco, vaping, alcohol, and legal drug consumption.

It's interesting to me how "gambling Apps" aren't on this list

Especially if one has looked into what sort of personal and social ruin that particular proclivity wreaks on societies

Apple's App Store does not prohibit gambling apps.
