When Apple had its town hall meeting to announce the SDK & v2.0 of the firmware, they showed another space shoot-em game. Anyone know if this'll be available on the app store. If so, what is it called? Looks fun.

The first time I watched the keynote, I just thought that Apple developed that game (Touch Fighter) to show what the iPhone is capable of. Then I watched the video again and noticed that Apple copyrighted that game. (You can see the copyright information at the bottom of the game's title page.) I'm not a lawyer, but I'm not sure why Apple would go through the trouble of copyrighting a game that they only showed for a few seconds. This leads me to believe that they have more plans for this game: to potentially sell it. Apple develops games for the iPod, it would only make sense that they develop some for the iPhone too.

Ooh, what are these new "Interface" and "Tweaks" preference categories? Are they just temporary things like a debugger, or something new that we'll all get to fiddle with come June?

I am sincerely hoping that "Tweaks" is placeholder text. It seems awfully crude for Apple and the iPhone.

I'm hoping one of those new Settings features allows for the customization of the home screen (change dock/background, etc)... It's those simple things that make me really happy...

agreed. changing that ugly dock is one of my top reasons for jailbreaking.

Well, copyright is not like a trademark or a patent. To copyright something, you don't actually need to do anything. Proof of when it was created as a tangible thing is all. Putting a copyright on the screen is nothing more than a statement that apple created it. They didn't file for copyright, etc.

I wonder how much Apple will push for games to be developed for the iPhone/iTouch. They seem serious at first glance.

Based on the SDK release event, I imagine that games will be a very strong priority for Apple and for developers like EA. I just hope there's a version of Call of Duty down the line.

there isnt one now, why worrysome?

Because many, many people want the horizontal keyboard for easier texting. So it's worrysome that Apple apparently still hasn't added it, even with this being a "major" update.

(Of course, it could still be included at the last minute, but it's disappointing that it's probably the most asked-for feature; yet each update arrives without it. It's particularly disappointing when the horizontal keyboard already exists in mobile Safari. So how difficult would it be to make it available in other apps?)

You people defy logic. How do you know that Apple didn't file for copyright? As someone who makes a living via intellectual property (i.e., copyright), I'm almost 100% sure that Apple did file for copyright.

"Well, copyright is not like a trademark or a patent."

You are DEAD WRONG. Copyright is exactly like a trademark or a patent. Papers are filed along with a copy of the intellectual property.

Now, in the event of a claim of copyright infringement, if no papers were filed, the plaintiff can sometimes prove ownership by proving that the work existed by a certain date (such as by unopened, postmarked mail, or by proving that they displayed it publicly, as Apple did, during the SDK event).

Regardless, when I make an educated guess, regarding Apple's actions, I say, "I'm almost 100% sure." But you said, "They didn't file for copyright," as if you were there and you know. And your previous statement proves you hardly know anything about copyright at all.

Why do so many of you in these forums speak as if you're an authority on something, when you clearly are not? (That was a rhetorical question, in case you weren't sure.) If you have an opinion, state it as such. Don't make concrete statements that you can't back up.

I just really don't see the iPhone as even a casual gaming device. Don't get me wrong, it's nice to have Tetris when you have time to kill. But, Tetris on the iPhone without really making use of its features would be the way to go, since I don't want fancy Tetris, but good ol simple Tetris. But then that would make my iPhone more like an ordinary cell phone. ...The better the game, the more ordinary the iPhone looks.

I'm looking to get a Touch soon, although I will probably wait for the rumored price drop. How linked are the iPhone and Touch updates? For example, will all the features that come out for the iPhone in v2, in June, (save the phone feature itself) be available as a simple upgrade for the Touch? Will the iTunes app store be available for the Touch in June as an upgrade or would you have to buy another newer Touch?

I have a feeling these next 3 months are going to go by so slow. can't wait for some of these apps and games to come out.

Yeah, and WWDC isn't until June either. The only interesting products to possibly get updates before then are the Mac Mini and iMac.

Yes, if the iPhone is all you care about (not me, got a blackberry with a nice trackball and some cool casual games) then the boring times are here for awhile. ;)

The iPhone 2.0 (software) features WILL be available as an upgrade to current Touch owners. The 2.0 upgrade will cost something, though, whereas it will be free for iPhone owners.

As for hardware updates, I think we all expect an "iPhone 2" this year--maybe around the time of the new software, maybe later. I don't personally expect the iPod Touch to get a significant generational update at the same time--it's simpler hardware, and already HAS a full-size headphone opening

Aside from whole new generations, there's always the chance of larger capacities, new colors, or price reductions on either product at any time. Or whole new products (nano touch, lower-end phone, larger mini-tablet, whatever).

I'll take a 32GB iPhone 2 Red, please :)

not necessarily

Casual gamers crippled the gaming world.

While I don't fully agree with this statement, I will say that most games nowadays are a lot less challenging than they use to be, which is mainly to cater to the large portion of casual gamers out there who aren't willing to spend hours/days trying to get to that next level.

agreed. changing that ugly dock is one of my top reasons for jailbreaking.

Can you post some pics of other kinds of docks or the one you use? I love the way it looks normally and I really wouldn't want a different background on the home screen, it would be way too distracting and would make all the icons get lost. When Apple does something I don't like I will say it, but i really understand why they keeps things a certain way sometimes like that, it is just much better. I see pics online of peoples different background pics on the home screen and it looks like a horrible mess :(

Example: One thing Apple needs to change now, is make the iPod just one icon app on the Touch like it is on the iPhone. Now that it is like a mini computer there is no point in having an icon for music and another one for video, just make it an iPod icon like the iPhone. It would be much more simple and better organized. There is no need to clutter up things with unnecessary icons especially now that there are going to be tons of apps to take up screen space. I think they should have it like that for 2.0.

AMEN!!! The keyboard was hands down THE BIGGEST feature to be attacked when the phone was announced. I thought for sure Apple would add universal landscape by the time it went on sale as an answer to all the criticism and it absolutely boggles my mind that they still after several updates have not added that. I know several people that will not part from their BlackBerries ONLY because of the typing, and if they would add that they would switch in a heart beat. Sorry Apple but you have really dropped the ball on that one, GET IT IN!

PLEASE I have been asking forever, can someone PLEASE tell me how to delete a post if I accidentally post a couple things in a row like I did here and I want to combine them. How can I do that??? Thanks!

Faster

Anyone know how to make June come any faster? :p

Suddenly my 8GB iPhone is going to be running out of space quick!

In all countries where the Berne Convention standards apply, copyright is automatic, and need not be obtained through official registration with any government office. Once an idea has been reduced to tangible form, for example by securing it in a fixed medium (such as a drawing, sheet music, photograph, a videotape, or a computer file), the copyright holder is entitled to enforce his or her exclusive rights.

VGA resolution - pleaaaase

I just hope they'll also upgrade the screen resolution of the "iPhone 2.0". I don't feel that 480x320 are smooth enough, especially considering the screen size.
Japanese and Korean cell phones already have 800x480px, lot's of PDAs with about the same screen size as the iPhone have VGA (640x480).
The higher resolution would come in handy when reading web sites or PDFs. In general the screen would appear to be "smoother". I just hope they won't forget that, while working on 3G/UMTS/CDMA, A-GPS, 32GB, etc

The key board in safari is designed to type 1 line in the address bar not whole paragraphs, in an email etc you wouldn't be able to see what you are doing.

that's why I assume it is only portrait in mail and sms. I just tried it for this post and you can't even see the magnification when placing where to type its off screen

Just edit it with a please delete note and hope a mod comes along to delete it

And of course, if you DON'T do ANY filing, and I have something even CLOSE to what you're doing..... and I did file..... you're dead.

You don't know what you're talkin about.

I hope Apple makes it so the trick of tapping the top of the screen in Safari to scroll to the top of a page works in all apps. I've lost count of the number of times I've tried to do that in Mail and iTunes.
