Hi! :D

I would like to propose a boycott. How bout if all of us boycott Apple products until they give us our Macbook Pro update!
That means no more iTunes, no more Apple TV, no more software updates, no more Mighty Mice bought, etc, etc until they cave to our iron-hard resolve and give us that computer!

Tell your friends - with enough of us we can do it!
:apple:The Boycott Starts Now!

(I'm only partially kidding  )

-Mike

but.. but.. If I can't spend my tax rebate on a new MacBook Pro and I can't spend my money in iTunes or on an Apple TV/Time Capsule combo... what the heck should I do with my money?
Save it?!?!

For whatever it might be worth I noticed that the price for refurbed MBPs has recently dropped; this might be indicative of Apple's desire to move 'em out before the new ones arrive.

oh please that has been going on for the past month or so. who knows when they are coming out. apple loves toying with us and we hate it. its their fault when they start losing customers that need a laptop now and move onto something else that is more powerful and alot cheaper.

Anybody dug into the 10.5.2 update for evidence yet?

Has anybody analyzed the 10.5.2 update for signs of a new MBP? Previously it was reported on the news item at the beginning of this thread that the developer seeds of the 10.5.2 update contained the "MacBookPro4,1" identifier, thus proving that there was an imminent MBP release.

I am curious if that has changed in the publicly available 10.5.2 update. Also, are there any signs of new hardware support in the 10.5.2 update that may leak details on the upcoming MBP? This has happened in the past with other unreleased Macs.

I have downloaded the update package DMG with the intention to rip it apart and get the details. However, after some unsuccessful attempts on my PC, it seems to me that the 10.5.2 update DMG file could only be viewed or analyzed under OSX. I do not own a Mac yet, so am pretty bummed with no way of getting all that info for now.

with "mac drive" you can use hfs partitions, mac cds/dvds and even open dmgs on a windows pc.

if the new MBP required 10.5.2 why not leave the MBp files out of the general update and just ship them with MBP only install discs that contain the extra files (just like with the MBA)?

Christmas

I'm sure we all remember what it was like to be 10 on Christmas eve not being able to sleep, not being able to wait for the next day to come.

Kinda sucks for us that this is every night for the past couple of months haha :D

I'd like to think that the MBP's are already under production and that this delay is actually reducing the shipping time for when they're released. I know it'd be nice to know now that they'd be here in 3-4 weeks, but if in 1 or 2 weeks they're released with a 1-3 week ship time, they ain't going to arrive any sooner if we knew that now.

I know it'd be nice to know, but 3-4 weeks is going to come just as soon regardless. ;)

u kno, thats a really good way of thinking about it. theyr just making heeps more as fast as they can so that we dont have to wait *as long* when they are announced :)

btw does any1 kno what the average waiting time is for a new release by apple?? say... to australia??

The evidence is .. there is no real evidence

Of course it's going to happen but the idea that Apple is 'toying' with us ridiculous and demented: what would be the point exactly?

"Everything's ready on the new MBPs, Steve"
"NO! Wait up a few months - I want them all to squirm! Mwahahahaha" etc.

Right. Apple will get them out when they're ready and when it makes sense to - and they certainly will not release a major update of the MBP right round the corner from the MBA - it makes zero sense and anyone who thought it'd be Feb 5 or 12 simply does not have their brain in gear. The MBA will get the limelight for a little while longer - and meanwhile most of us have got excellent computers that work just fine - apart from the Leopard/wifi garbage they've been serving up the last two months+
Relax, enjoy the wait - I always do. Remember the wait for Leopard? Intolerable right? But it passed before you knew it. Same thing here, and it's likely that the wait will be followed mostly by pleasure....

I guess we just have to wait patiently and see when Apple makes the move, that's how it's always been at least for me it has been like that. Haha.

OK, before I post this, please be advised that I have just as much disdain for unsubstantiated rumors as the next person. Having served in the military, I know that loose lips sink ships. I have yet to find anything about the upcoming MPB release that I find credible, including Hardmac, or various other sites who post one or two lines sighting a so called source. I bounce back and forth between here and the apple insider forums and have observed a member over there called tailpipe (Joined Aug 07) makle two posts over the pasts couple weeks that I find interesting. Take it as you will, believe it or not, it is entirely up to you. For me, this is the best and most believable discussion I have heard thus far about the new MPBs release. Even if it is not true, it still is a good read.

His first post was on 02-01-2008 @ 11:12 AM:

"This info comes to you from London via an Englishman working at Apple, (and there are more than you think ;-))

A revised MacBook Pro with a Leopard 10.5.2 update was meant to debut at MacWorld but neither was ready.

The delay for the MBP was caused by Intel Penryn processors not being available due to some production glitch. As we all know, Apple doesn't like to announce products too far ahead of their shipping dates - with the notable exception of the iPhone - so decided to delay the launch. Penryn-based PCs now good to go and begin shipping Monday.

Expect new MBP 15-inch and 17-inch within two weeks. 17-inch gets LED.
New MBP DOES feature a slightly revised case design with the new black keyboard from MBA and a larger trackpad, but is basically very similar to existing design. Think evolution not revolution.

The idea is to achieve a commonality of look across the range.
SSD will be an option offering an exceptionally fast boot time < 30 seconds.
Also seen lurking in the corridors of Cupertino was an aluminum MacBook 13". Initially available in silver, my source reckons anodized black, blue, pink and other colours will be available around September. New MacBooks will be a big story later this year. One of the range (I don't know which, maybe the black one) will have a superior spec that basically makes it a MacBook Pro 13"."

His second post was today, @ 11:17 AM

"The all new MacBook Pro was meant to make its debut at MacWorld in January. The big story was meant to be that while 2007 was all about the iPhone, 2008 would see Apple return to its roots: computers. Steve Jobs had planned to reveal a brand new 17" MacBook Pro, a brand new 15" MacBook Pro, (and, if my source is correct, there was even meant to be a brand new 13" model, but it isn't clear whether this was MacBook Pro or MacBook - but it is definitely aluminum). Having introduced these machines, the "...and just one more little thing." was meant to be the MacBook Air.

All of these machines feature the gesture touchpad, new keyboard, LED screens and super-sleek thinner case designs, longer battery life, lower weight than the existing line-up and 802.11n WiFi capabilities. What screwed up the launch was the manufacturing problem Intel is having with Penryn processors using the new 45Nm process. THEY STILL HAVEN'T YET SHIPPED IN VOLUME. Given that Leopard 10.5.2 wasn't ready either, the decision to pull the launch was made as a delay between announcement and launch would have killed Mac sales. As things stand, Apple will not launch any revised laptops until Penryn is up and running. That is expected to happen later this week or next week.

For these reasons, Apple is holding a special event in February which will include the iPhone SDK but no 3G iPhone yet.

Apparently, the decision to pull the launch of the revised range was only taken just before the MacWorld Conference and SJ was not amused. Fortunately, the MacBook Air uses a unique processor that was ready in time so this was unaffected by the penryn problem.
So, be patient, friends, new MBPs are coming. The delay isn't Apple's fault.
By all accounts, we'll all be delighted when these machines show-up. They'll be worth their WAIT in Gold."

Now let me ask you all one question, can anyone provide proof that Intel's new mobile chip has shipped in volume? (While some manufacturers claim the laptops with the new chips are in stock, I have yet to see any ship and there are only one or two reviews on Penryn based laptops thus far).

The Feb. 26th event starts to make sense given the post above. By then, Apple can confirm immediate availability of Penryn chips, complete 10.5.2, and use the presentation originally scheduled for MWSF.

Apple has been on a torrid pace as of late: 10.5.2 update, graphics update, Aperture update, iLife update, iPhone/iPod touch updates...

A "mini MacWorld" like event to announce the iPhone SDK and the immediate availability of new MBP's definitely seems reasonable in this context. Laptops are the hottest segment of Apple's computer business, and the MBP is their flagship laptop. I have no doubt that Apple is as eager as the rest of us to upgrade the MBP as soon as they can.

Hi! :D

I would like to propose a boycott. How bout if all of us boycott Apple products .....

I agree, but only in the context of the MBP. I've been telling people I know who are interested in buying one that they should wait until the new one is released soon. I've also heard that people have been taking newly purchased ones back to the store. This is all good news - I think we should spread the word about boycotting the existing MBPs.

But by all means, if you want an iPod, buy an iPod. :)

Chinese New Year

Someone earlier mentioned that Chinese New Year might cause a production delay. As someone (else) who has been waiting to upgrade (since Mid-December when my 5 1/2 year old TiBook's video died) I am eager to believe the update is coming. So - I was picking something up at a Chinese sewing factory here in San Francisco today and asked the folks there if there was any truth to the factories closing for New Years. They told me that everything stops for 10 days in China! They showed me on their Chinese Calendar (where February 7 is the first day of the year) that businesses were closed as of Monday the 4th and would begin re-opening on Friday the 15th or Monday the 18th. They also told me the 7th day - today - is "everyone's birthday". As they put it: "All the believers celebrate their birthday today" (in addition to their regular birthday), so today is a huge celebration.

These are Chinese born people. I trust them completely on this. I don't know if it means anything, but the idea that MBP production would be delayed for these 2 weeks makes me feel a tiny bit less frustrated by the wait. I shared this in hopes that you all might get a slight stress reduction too. It's a good thing to get a glimpse of another culture in any case. I for one will plan on taking a trip to China (if I ever get to) during this time. Besides the party, the air must be a lot cleaner with all the factories shut down.

All good things are worth waiting for, aren't they?

The only thing that would change my mind about Apple's poor decision making in reference to PRO hardware and software would be them releasing updates every Tuesday for the next few months.

Next Tuesday: Apple Cinema Displays (lower price/redesigned case)

Tuesday after that: New redesigned MBP with Penryn and dual HDD on 17" model. NO cheesy MacBook keyboard.

Then: MacMini

Then: Airport Express

Then: Mouse

Then: Something else

Then Something else

Until they have the entire lineup of hardware fully up-to-date. I hope the iPhone doesn't get an SDK until we have our new MBPs.

I did my own analysis of Aperture to see if I would buy it along with a new MBP and here is what I found:
"Using Multi-Touch Trackpad Gestures with Aperture 2

If your portable computer has a Multi-Touch trackpad, you can use Multi-Touch
trackpad gestures when working with Aperture. For example, when working with
images in the Browser, you can use the rotate gesture to rotate images and the swipe
gesture to select a different image. In addition to using the standard trackpad gestures
used with Mac portable computers, you can also use Multi-Touch trackpad gestures
with the following Aperture features."

Given that the instructions focus on portable computers and the only the MBA has multi-touch it would be safe to assume that other laptops would be coming out supporting multi-touch. Aperture is a pro product and the MBA doesn't seem a likely candidate for Aperture.

It gives me hope that the new MBP's will be out soon.

The only thing that would change my mind about Apple's poor decision making in reference to PRO hardware and software would be them releasing updates every Tuesday for the next few months.

Not sure if you're in the UK - But either side of the pond, haven't Apple done a fair bit already this year? Jobs specifically stated in his keynote Apple will be having a more regular every darn month release of something new, be it hardware of software.

We've had over the first 60 odd days off the top of my head: Releases or announcements of:
Macbook Air
Time Capsule
Apple TV Take 2
Apple TV upgrade for v1.0
Aperture
Bump on iPhone and Touch size
Quicktime, iLife, OS X updates
iTunes price drop

Up this year:
Late 08 Mac Pro
Early 08 MBP
iMac
New screens
Silverthorne
iTablet (perrrrrhaps)
3G iPhone
Bump on iPhone and Touch size
Starbucks iPhone Touch deal
And a whole raft of stuff to come (SDK possible hookup with Adobe's AIR etc, MBP with better trackpad (superior to Air, which is between MB and MBP, new screens, video 3G MMS etc on iPhone, )

So it might not be every Tuesday, but i'm wager every month - every fortnight. "Any given Tuesday" so to speak. As for Pro only - a modular sytem allow user upgrade, allows some space on the kit side. you can throw in more RAM, more HDs, Swap chips, Change graphics cards, in a very easy manner. There may be some delay now, as Intel's roadmap means that there's a chip change now, with a board change in the next few months anyhow.

cmm26red's post above again brings up that interesting post that he quotes. And I hope someone knows about the chip shipping volumn he questions.

We have sort of assumed that the new pros will be updated versions of the present models. What if Apple says no, that the Air is the future and makes nothing but bigger and better MBAs? Air Force, Air Superiority, yeah, that makes more sense.

And the MB, a nice new aluminum one, competing closely with the MBA and the cheaper MBPs...doesn't make sense. Maybe the MBA drops down in price and a Super-Air, or Pro-Air, takes the present price position and the MB is dropped.

Not likely now, but I'll bet Apple would like to just have a whole line of Airs. Three sizes of the same case, three screens, an assortment of innards and so on. Real simple and modular, easy to build and all going down the same line. Makes a lot of sense. And a lot of profit.

All that is in the way is the optical drive...

If this turns out to be true then I'll have to get at least 3 different mac's.. and that's laptops only. Wah! Need MacBook Air, MacBook Silver? and 15" or 17" MacBook Pro :)

Looking forward to it ! :apple:

You're right, if nothing else, it does make for an interesting read.

Although I'm at the point where I find myself refreshing the store every Tuesday morning, it would make the next couple weeks bearable if there were some other sources that also suggest that the big event on the 26th might be something other than/in addition to an iPhone announcement. Posts like this one are what keeps me from just going ahead and ordering one in my weaker moments.

Save it?!?!

Save it sounds good. The recession has barely started even, so might as well be prepared.
