Despite persistent rumors of MacBook Pro updates, we've yet to see the rumored Penryn, Multi-touch trackpad MacBook Pro revisions. However, there appears to be ongoing evidence that the MacBook Pro updates are imminent.

The current MacBook Pros which were released in June carry a system identifier label of "MacBookPro3,1". One reader notes that an application called MiniBatteryLogger provides public battery tracking logs, and recently revealed an entry with an identifier of "MacBookPro4,1". "MacBookPro4,1" is presumably the identifier for the unreleased MacBook Pro revisions. The author of the application states that the identifier is obtained automatically from the system, though there are no guarantees that it wasn't faked.

However, this same new "MacBookPro4,1" identifier has also found in the latest developer seeds of Mac OS X 10.5.2 from Apple. In contrast, the public version of Mac OS X 10.5.1 does not contain the "4,1" identifier.

In many ways, all this does is verify what we have presumed to be true... that MacBook Pro revisions are coming, and soon enough that the Mac OS X 10.5.2 will support them, but it's still somewhat reassuring for those waiting patiently for the new MacBook Pros.

Did anyone ever verify if the "MacBookPro4,1" identifier was in fact the new (most recent Rev.E) MacBook Pro? You always hear about these 'leaks' and 'whispers' but rarely do we see the follow through as to whether they were legit or not.

(It would be nice if some of these rumors were validated so we don't all feel crazy chasing ghosts all of the time) ;)

So true.

Either way, Im just hoping the new MacBook Pros don't come in white/black, with a plastic back.

"MacBookPro4,1" was the legit identifier for Feb. 08 released MBP. People should be looking for "MacBookPro5,1", "MacBook5,1", "MacBookAir2,1" identifier in the latest 10.5.4, 10.6 developer seed or logging software like MiniBatteryLogger by now.

That is what my MBP shows. Bought it two weekends ago.

That's promising... maybe it will reveal the next revision sometime prior to the official release...

There should be a 'rumors scorecard' much like what is done after a WWDC or MWSF. It would help identify which rumors are worth listening to, and which should be ignored. Otherwise, we are just delaying purchases (and enjoyment) based on photoshopped pictures and fake blogs that will never be true.

Random speculation/rumors can be fun, but even more fun are rumors that are likely to be legit. ;)

You could have validated it yourself.
Of course if your signature is legit, that is.

i have a good feeling that the new mbp's will have a black Aluminum finish like the black ipod classics :) and that will only be for the high end ones, the low end models will still have the silver aluminum

MBP is en route... ordered it about 3 days ago (so I guess you could say the MBP is 'pending')

Is the 2.4GHz in your signature the new one you just ordered? Contemplating picking one of those up, but of course worried the second I order it Apple will release all new MBP's

I don't want to have to pay $200 for a color like the MacBook crowd...

If there is a black anodized aluminum MacBook Pro, it will be the 17" and only as an option. That's how Apple does colors. Well, except for the MacBooks.

Yeah, that's the one. And like DigitalSkunk said, at some point you just have to get on with it. I totally understand that you dont want to buy something that is about to get updated, but the bottom line is, it may not get updated anytime soon.

This was my rationale for pulling the trigger, despite all the (usual) new MBP rumors:

1. I needed a new computer. Badly. My current rig is an 8 year old 700MHz Athlon with 256mb of ram.

2. The back to school deal happening right now is fantastic if you can swing the student discount. Luckily my wife is taking a part time course. Not only do you get $200 off the MBP, but you get a $320 ipod and $100 off a printer. I already sold the ipod and printer for an additional $350 discount off the system. That's $550 off in total. (I live in Canada)

It's arriving tomorrow - and I am very excited (my first Mac). I think just having an updated computer that doesn't crash from loading photoshop is going to make me so happy that I wont care about a macbook-style keyboard or magnetic latch... or whatever small thing is going to come in the case redesign.
