a lot of their arguments are actually pretty senseless:

Alarm clock bug? Really? thats a reason for you? I'd take a good keyboard plus alarm clock bug over androids crappy keyboard any day

endless customization...if you root? How is that different than jailbreaking? That also gives you pretty much endless customization.

non removable battery? If you had a device other than an EVO (which usually lasts less than a day), then you wouldn't need to switch the battery. Especially an iP4 which has great battery life.

seems like fanboy rambling to me.

although my post also probably seems like fanboy rambling...but I don't even use my iPhone anymore. Ive switched over to WP7. My iphone is just for apps and developing now

As a dumb and lazy Physicist I can say, I love my iPhone and my colleagues love their iPhones and Androids and Dumbphones and wired Landline Phones. Its all about personal preference. For most Mac User it is common to look for a iPhone first maybe...

I would never had thought about studying chemistry or anything else than Physics, why? Because "it's my thing".

And to every reader from the xda-developers forum - have fun with your phones and customizations. To every jail breaker at macrumors - have fun with you phones and customizations.

I just use the stock phone - because - it suits me well. "It's my thing"

My answer is easy; It's called Simplicity. Apple makes the most user friendly, simple devices. My partner has an Android device, and I don't like them at all. Apple products are simple, gorgous and easy to use. There is just no comparison.

Can't say it any better than that, but the fanboy in me wants to try: Android Sucks! There, I feel better now.

And say you jail break your iPhone, but oh no, your rom gets frozen, and you need to pull out your battery and reset, oh wait, you can't. On my Android powered Evo, I can.

I stopped reading after that comment ...

That has been my point about the iPhone lately, it is has become the "dumb" smartphone, designed for the masses, that don't want to tinker and customize their phone.
...
I am opened minded to going back to an iPhone5, I just want a few changes first before I come back. I hope iOS5 will add "Widgets" and "Notifications" to the next iPhone...

If you like iOS and DO want to tinker, JB an iPhone and add those things. I have added live weather and clock icons, pull down notifications, wifi tethering, informative lock screen and quick toggles for 3G/wifi/and tethering.

Both Android and Apple fanboys say dumb **** that's not true about each others OS. All of you do nothing but try to justify your purchases.

I agree, a jailbreaked iPhone4 is much much better, and allows customizing like Android. But I would only go for the Verizon iPhone for better phone service, and will only buy it once there is a solid untethered jailbreak out for it first.

If there is a 4.3 jailbreak rather soon, I just might come back to the iPhone, but if it is like April or so, then no way, just wait for iPhone-next.

Or will there be a good jailbreak out for the Verizon build right away ? I think it is 4.2.5 or 4.2.6 ?

Agreed, both are closed to any reasonable discussion. My take on it is that I choose a phone that best matches my needs. I had used the iPhone 3GS, and thought it was a good phone, went to the Nexus One and thought that was a great phone for different reasons. I jumped over to VZW and picked up a Droidx and thought it was an OK phone. The more I used it the more I noticed some deficiencies. Most of my criticisms for the droidx is centered on how slow Moto is in producing updates/upgrades.

I'll be going to the iPhone 5 this summer on AT&T.

Just read a couple of pages in that thread, it is interesting.
Really? Most of it is fanboy posturing. Upthread, jimmy james did a pretty good job summarizing the salient points. My iphone runs my software without a hickup and my battery last throughout the day. I'm happy with my iphone.

All my family members and friends who started off with iPhone back in 2007, and now in 2011, the real geeks that build their own computers, and read tech blogs all left iPhone, and have Android or WinMo7 phones now, the only family or friends that still buy the iPhone are older women that I know.
I am opened minded to going back to an iPhone5, I just want a few changes first before I come back. I hope iOS5 will add "Widgets" and "Notifications" to the next iPhone, and would love a 4" screen, the 3.5" is way too small. If Apple does that to the iPhone-next, I will come back. But if there is an HTC EVO-2 this Summer, will be a tough fight to see who is top dog to me, the iPhone5 or EVO-2 ?
I bought the first iphone when it came out and I've stuck with it since. While the android phones have some interesting features and customization, none of them offer the overall experience and mac compatibility that I require. I can get mac compatibility and customization via jb, so I have no reason to switch. Granted this may change in the future. I try to keep an open mind about these things.
Personally, I doubt the iphone will go to a bigger form factor; that would likely violate Jobs' aesthetic. If I wanted widgets or notifications, I have that option in jb.

Started with original Droid, currently use the Droid X and loved both phones. Oh, and also have an EVO on Sprint basically for a home phone an unlimited internet. But after seeing that Retina display, HD video, and awesome pictures that IPhone takes all on Verizon's network, I had to get it. Besides, I have all Mac's at home. Definitely will have to jailbreak though, had way too much fun customizing those Droids. Hope jailbreaking will satisfy my customizing needs!!!

Android user here.

There are three things that keep me from trying an iphone

#1. Itunes. Itunes blows and you NEED it to get anything on and off of the phone. Get rid of iTunes and you're half-way to attracting other smart phone users.

#2- Apple's walled garden policy. Since jailbreaking is available, this is more of an annoyance than anything else... but allowing people to use their devices as they would like to would really eliminate the #1 complaint that people have with Apple's products

#3 - The users. The final reason I would not buy an iPhone is because I would not want to be lumped in with the other 70-million people who own the SAME EXACT PHONE and the subset of emo hipsters who brandish their Macs at the local coffee shop because its trendy. Being a Mac fan was cool 10-15 years ago. Now your mom and the old lady across the street all have Apple computers. Popular? Yes. Trendy/cool? No, that train left the station with the Clinton administration.

Totally agree. You go to Starbucks, and see all the emo balding dudes, with their black turtle neck sweaters on, sipping their cup of joe, and reading their iTampon, and then a text message goes off, and everyone in the store picks up their iPhone4 at the same time, lol.

I read this reply about the iPad on another thread, and this guy was spot on, oes the same with the iPhone;

Apple, formerly the "Think Different" company, has deluged the market with a million phones that look exactly alike and they want everyone to carry them around. They HAVE become the Microsoft of this generation, and Android IS the new paradigm shift. Just admit it, fanboys, and move on. Don't get me wrong...I love my new MacBook Air, but I'm NOT giving up my HTC Android phone, and I will be buying an Android tablet.

That seems kind of lame - you don't want a phone because its popular. Why not get a phone that best suits your needs regardless of how many people own it.

while I do agree with you regarding the walled garden approach, clearly google's approach is not working, they need some oversight. The number of malware occurrences, and complete rip off applications are evident. What motivation is there for a developer when they allow a clone of your app into the market place for free. I've seen blatant clones, of various apps.

Even google admits that there's too many free apps and that people are not purchasing a lot of apps.

I guess he's going to jump to WMP7 next since Android is becoming so popular.

Frankly, it's a bit pathetic to base your decisions on other peoples likes/dislikes.
It meet MY needs and provides ME enjoyment. I like the iPhone, because I like the iPhone.

The comparison between EVO 4g and iPhone 4, it's like comparing Mercedes with Ferrari. Mercedes means perfection, but the Ferrari means soul,passion..
And, in this case, the iPhone 4 is the Ferrari.

Thank you!

Isn't choosing your phone OS based on whether it's popular just as shallow as choosing it because it's not?

A few posts ago you were ready to get the iPhone 5 if they changed some hardware then you were ready to get an iPhone 4 for Verizon if a 4.3 untethered jailbreak was released soon. In the above post you call iPhone users "emo balding dudes, who wear black turtlenecks, and sip their cup of joe while reading their iTampon".

Either you can be easily manipulated or are trying to justify you purchasing an Android based phone.

Android is great for techies and tinkerers.
iPhone is great for *regular* people, techies, and tinkerers.

The only reason a techie pushes a regular person to use Android is in the hopes of being their support person. Every regular person I've met using Android does not know how to really use it, whereas my (almost) 3 year old is quite good with his iPod touch already. Yes, he has one. It was free with the laptop! :)

#1. No argument there.

#2. If you rooted your Android based phone and jacked it up somehow would you be able to take it to the vendor to have it fixed or could you do the same thing as is done on the iPhone and reinstall?

#3. All phones will eventually look the same. Most will find the 4" screen size to be perfect and most users will not bother customizing their Android phones which means the lock screen and other screens will look the same. If all you are looking to be is trendy/cool then bring back the Motorola Startac. You will be the epitome of a hipster.

I switched over to WP7 last month as I've been looking for something different.
Android doesn't interest me. Still too much of a cluster #$&*.

I've been an iPhone owner since 2007 and I got tired of the jailbreak merry-go-round to keep the phone functioning the way I like.

So far WM7 does everything I was able to do on my 3GS.
MS already has the first round of updates coming this month to bring in copy and paste and some speed improvements..
Why they left it off the initial launch is beyond me, but Apple left it out for years. So I'll wait patiently.
I still have my 3GS as a backup, but it hasn't left its box since I brought home my Focus.

All I tell anyone is buy what works for you.

Reasons to not choose an EVO:
- battery life
- lack of official OS updates (how's that FroYo?), gated by HTC and Sprint
- Sprint
- Android UI/UX lack of polish
- Marketplace quality
- fragmentation
- limited app space (1GB)

Anticipated responses:
- buy 3rd party extended battery <-- makes phone even more huge
- root! custom ROM! XDA! <-- poor stability, constant maintenance
- It's ok where I live ... <-- not true for many people
- iOS sux0rz! <-- Uh, ok
- but we have a fancy new web interface <-- app quality and variety is still lacking
- it's choice you iSheep! <-- sure, whatever helps you feel like a l33t hax0r
- root! A2SD! <-- requires rooting, A2SD not universally supported

I'm loving the idea that you do not want something because lots of other people have it. Is this some form of reverse snobbery? Pick a phone because it does what you want or need it to do. Don't pick a phone because it makes you look trendy.

I want a phone that does what I want easily and seamlessly. The closed garden thing means that I don't tend to get crap apps. I'm also less likely to get apps that cream off my data. As yet I haven't felt limited by Uncle Steve's itunes store. When I do I will either jailbreak or get another phone.

I am fairly fat and very untrendy. My iphone hasn't fixed any of that yet. If there was an app that did that, I'd buy it.:p

- buy 3rd party extended battery < No need to with good Rom
- root! custom ROM! XDA! <-- phone is running better and faster than ever, and ZERO maintenance required, and no lockups, or bugs at all with my Rom.
- It's ok where I live ... < in Chicago, Sprint blows away T-Mobile and ATT
- iOS sux0rz! <-- no, just dated and stale
- but we have a fancy new web interface < I found the apps I wanted and use with no problem on the market
- it's choice you iSheep! < yes I like choice.

- root! A2SD! <-- requires rooting, so ?

Bottom line is it's a silly argument... it's like Banana vs Orange... two different things offering similar experience to those who consume it.

Right now, Android is on fire. They've gotten in two years where it took Apple to get in four years.

Today they'e equals.... a matter of personal preference between the two user groups.

What will be interesting is to see where the two go. Android seems to be quicker to adopt new features and leave less need for the user to have to hack the device to have all the features they want. Also, more manufacturers are coming out with cool devices for Android.

2011 will be a turning point... it'll either be the year Apple finally decides to cave and add features people jailbreak for, and branch out into additional handsets and faster feature deployment.... or it'll be known as 2011, year of Android. I suspect the later but hope for the first.
