"There's no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance." - Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft.

"No wireless. Less space than a nomad. Lame." - Rob Malda, founder of Slashdot, on original iPod announcement in 2001.

"I'd shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders." - Michael Dell, founder of Dell Computers, on what he'd do if he were in charge of Apple (1997). (Responded Jobs: “We’re coming after you, you’re in our sights.”)

"The iPad sucks and is a big bag of Fail and it sucks." - the genius commenters of MacRumors.

Thanks for the entertainment everyone, but I'll put my money on Jobs.

"Nobody wants a tablet." - Steve Jobs

"Nobody wants a tablet." - Steve Jobs

He said that in 2004, and it was about what tablets at the time were. You could at the very least throw in some context, but hey if you just enjoy being disingenuous be my guest.

You really don't have to look too far to find dumb quotes from Steve Jobs, if that's what you're after. How about "People don't read anymore" in reference to ebooks? The truth is that whatever Jobs says is just hyping Apple products, that's all. If Apple doesn't make it then nobody wants it. When Apple decides to make it then suddenly my god! everyone's gonna want to use this thing. I'm not denying his true talents but as far as his his public statements go he's the industry's biggest shill.

Steve's words are still true today; nobody wants a tablet, everyone wants an iPad (they just don't know it yet). If everyone on internet forums who is vehemently critiquing the iPad thinks multitasking, flash support, a desktop OS and all those other missing features are so important for a tablet then why don't they go out and buy the tablets that can do all those things? Maybe because they can't wrap their minds around the concept that less is more, or that Apple make intrinsically better products and software than Microsoft and its partners.

I am not a web developer or anything but my understanding of the Flash issue is that it is inefficient, proprietary and superseded by the upcoming HTML5 standard.

Flash is improperly used by many. There are some things that it does nicely, but the truth is that most situations are better handled with javascripting and CSS2. I've yet to deal with serious clients that had a need that could only be filled with Flash. And all who had access restricted streaming content opted for DSS over paying for flash servers.

With better modern browsers, increasingly powerful/agile javascripting frameworks, and the importance of SEO, flash is just not worth the trouble - unless you're doing heavily animated interactive content, which very few people are.

Personally, I'd also rather not have to deal with learning scripting languages developed solely for proprietary platforms. Flash looks cool, but very few of my clients ask for it.

The prospect of Garageband and other audio editing applications on iPad is interesting but they would be limited without a way to connect MIDI peripherals to the device. If only there was a USB port on the iPad... Having said that, it is not impossible that there will be some kind of dock-based or solution, assuming new audio hardware is designed with the iPad and iPhone in mind.

This is an idea that I kind of like, however, I would like it to be slightly different.

The iPad is intended to compliment your main pc. I still think we are on our way to getting rid of the hardware keyboard (very slowly) but the iPad could become a HID device for your iMac/Mac Mini/Mac Pro, you will have your mixing desk, then something appropriate for whatever app you are using. Then you can take it away and just use it as the iPad.

Netbooks were designed to compliment your main pc, it's just when they came out, they had to use a fully featured OS instead of something more appropriate for the hardware. I have a Dell mini 9 and I'm currently running ubuntu on it, but flash might as well not be installed on it because it runs terribly, and as such, I have a self imposed 'no flash site' rule on here. The only thing I'd miss from this netbook on the iPad is the camera, so lets hope that gets sorted...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

Right on. Yes, the best thing is it costs 1/4 the price. Is touchOSC difficult to configure? Is there any latency?

TouchOSC isn't difficult, but you also need the OSCulator program for your Mac which translates the OSC from TouchOSC into MIDI so programs like Ableton Live can understand it. OSCulator isn't too difficult to configure unless you are trying to assign a MIDI parameter that isn't defined by default (which, as it turns out, is what I wound up having to do on a couple of instances.)

One thing missing on TouchOSC that the Lemur has an advantage over it, (but can be implemented by the TouchOSC developers if they put the effort into it) are the physics; unlike TouchOSC, with the Lemur, instead of just moving a slider around, you can throw the slider up and it will slide into place on its own, or you can throw a couple of bouncing balls around on the screen and they will react to each other (and the screen's edge) which makes for a really fun controller! There are quite a few good physics-based games on the app store already, the TouchOSC people need to add these physics into it's app for the iPad version...

As for latency, on rare occasions there was slight latency when going through my wireless router; I haven't tried creating an ad hoc network just between my Mac and my iPhone yet (that should eliminate any bit of latency.)

It really shocks me how many here don't see the potential of the iPad, especially because it is just a large iPod Touch... just that larger screen real estate alone is going to bring a plethora of new apps that weren't possible (or at least very difficult to pull off) on the iPhone/iPod Touch.

ipad!!! Ugh, I'm in love all over again!!! I must meet my destiny! Lol.

Honestly though, this is only the first model of the ipad, I'm sure they'll release an ipad pro, maybe with an isight onboard, voice recognition, stuff like that? Maybe this will change everything eventually, from security desks to university lectures, these ipads are only the beginning.

I like to think of it as a sight into the future of technology to come. What I mean is, look how far touch technology has come, look how far technology in general has come. With touch integration, we'll see a new world soon enough.

Sounds extreme, I know, but I'm very optimistic, and I have a crazy imagination. Lol, and that's my two cents on the matter. :)

Wow, aren't you literal. The MLB app is an example of what can be accomplished by devs in a short period of time on this platform.

And completely irrelevant for the majority of the world.

2 million app downloads at a premium, $10 price (most iPhone devs only dream of this). 60 million videos streamed to iPhones/iPods. MLB has made a **** load of money off of MLB at bat. It has increased their paid subscriptions (which cost ~$100) enormously (50% just at the beginning of the 2009 season, I'm sure it's much more than that by now). How can you say it's irrelevant for the majority of the world. MLB is one of the companies that has fully embraced technology and is using it properly to make their product second to none. Imagine what could be done with the NFL, the Olympics, On Demand TV, Medicine, etc, etc, etc.

Once again, some people are just stuck in their unimaginative ways...

Excellent to see. The apps are gonna be so cool.
As for flash adobe and apple should work together to optimize it. Not apple just giving them Apis or access to the source code. But really have a team for apple helping them to make it the best.

I can't stand all the people overly-voicing their negative opinions on the iPad. Did they miss the memo on what this thing is for? Were the black couch and coffee table not visible? This is a pick-me-up-and-get-to-it device, with comfort.

I don't want to have to surf the web / check e-mail from my tiny iPhone screen, by moving to a computer chair, or sitting cramped over a laptop. Why should such simple, down-to-the-grit tasks have such complexities?

The simple, ergonomic computing experience is something I'm really looking for. Yeah, I guess you could bash it for being a "gigantic iPod Touch" - if that's the only part of your brain that you can use. I for one love the gigantic multi-touch screen and can only imagine the possibilities. The majority of its fate really is in the developer's hands.

I'm sorry but sitting cramped over a laptop? How do you figure this thing won't be more of a cramp inducing machine than a laptop? I don't know where you sit when your on your laptop but I suggest finding a better place. As far as ergonomics go my MBP is far more comfortable than the iPad looks.

As a transplanted New Yorker, MLB's streaming products for out-of-market games has been a godsend (of course, they took away my Extra Innings package when they made it a directv exclusive :-( It would spectacular if the NFL would do the same (instead of me having to rely on slingboxing from my parents' house in NY). Which is another great thing about the iPad: slingplayer.

I am devastated by the sheer amazing depth of your humour.

How about a MaxiPad joke? You got one of those?

Everyone is getting way out of control with the iPad bashing. Sure it could be improved, but I fail to understand the vitriol displayed by many people online. Why are people so angry? Why all the name-calling?

Googolplex, amazing isn't it? But hey, I'm loving all the negativity, this is allowing me to load up on Apple shares at this price, and maybe even lower. The lower it goes, the more I'll buy. So keep it up boys!!! That's right, this is the worst move Apple ever made! Sell! Sell! Sell!

OMG I am so excited about iPad!!!

- no I can't multitask
- no I can't do video conferencing due to lack of camera
- no I can't install anything I want on it
- no I can't browse the net properly due to lack of Flash
- no I don't have USB port on it

But I am excited!!!

Well at least until I do reality check and see other Tablet devices from competing manufactures...

:D

Dude, My son, my wife, and my mom couldn't care less about any of that, and they all want one. Get it? It's not for you. It's for them. And me by the way, and I'm tech savy as hell.

How can you say it's irrelevant for the majority of the world.

The world is a very big place and not all parts of it are interested in MLB. The app is irrelevant to the majority of the world. Just as the ones I have on my iphone that bring me up to date news on the soccer club I support are. Doesn't mean they aren't valuable to those people who have them, I'm not saying that. But they are limited in their scope. Few people in Europe, say, are going to buy an ipad for that app, and right now it looks like ibooks is missing outside the US too. There's no "killer app" knocking on the door of anyone I've spoke to demanding that we all buy one.

MLB is one of the companies that has fully embraced technology and is using it properly to make their product second to none. Imagine what could be done with the NFL, the Olympics, On Demand TV, Medicine, etc, etc, etc.

Once again, some people are just stuck in their unimaginative ways...

You know what else is unimaginative? Assuming that everyone who isn't weeping with joy "doesn't get it". Frankly that just sounds like an excuse to avoid engaging in discussion over the merits of something.

I'm going to withhold my final judgement on the ipad until I've actually tried one myself (and I think the people who are jumping for joy should do the same) but right now it seems a little too limited. I understand exactly what they're trying to do, I'm just not convinced this iteration of the product, at least, hits the target.

My son, my wife, and my mom couldn't care less about any of that, and they all want one.

Exactly - FINALLY we have a computer we can turn on and of with a switch.
(if you don't see the appeal - you are not the target market)

This is the tech for the technophobe!

If my mum hadn't just bought a macbook i would be getting her an iPad.

I wonder if any gizmo has a broader age demographic than the iPod?

And once again :apple: is freeing the experience from the gobbledegook.

I agree. I didn't even know what MLB was until a few minutes ago. After seeing the hordes of people on hear raving about this "MLB app" I decided to google. "Is that all" was my reaction.

I like the idea and no doubt I'll end up with one. However, I still think the Kindle and other non-glare offerings are far, far better for reading than the new super shiny glare-in-your-face panels by Apple. For Steve not to understand this very basic concept, simply blows me away!

tech savy hey? if you were, you would get something up to date (like a tablet with the new tegra chipset)
