I'd buy that for a dollar...

Apple, or ALL places, doing a huge TV that has a Mac mounted in it, is a ridiculous idea.

Second, it's a jokey article, which due to the schizophrenic social ability of most computer nerds comes off as plausible.

Third, A 42" plasma can be gotten for as little as $1900 now. Best Buy. Magnavox. HDTV. I know, I am shopping for one. But, the price of an Apple shoved in one would still be twice that much, if for nothing more then having Steve Jobses handie prints all over it. So if this rumor has any truth, it is for a plasma tv-apple monitor for $2599. Would I buy that? No. The Magnavox has DVI inputs.

Fourth, I would buy it if it was a 42 inch Plah, with a G5 tower in it and has 4 slots and hard drive area for lotsa so and so, and has all the so and so's of a G5 tower. For $2599? Hellz yah. I need a ... whatever I just wrote. For that price. But I would be one of about 12 people buying, because that dual/quad whatever processor computer/tv will go to nuts in about 6 years, if not sooner. Unless they make upgrades over the year. Yeah, right. Apple? HAHAHA oh man, I really made a funny one there.

I'm not sure a product like this from Apple would make as much sense without HDTV videos being available from iTMS. So far, we've only gotten 320x240ish sizes. Is iTMS ready to go HDTV? Is broadband fast enough for HDTV streaming?

Think Vingle

Not even close. I sense a Steve Jobs whiff coming. Not every Apple product succeeds, from time to time Steve throws something out there that's not ripe for market. The iPod brilliantly anticipated the market and hit at the perfect time when everyone had 100s of Napster songs on their PC but limited and shrinking means to acquire new ones.

But TV? Nothing's stopping me from time shifting at will. I have an HD-DVR, OnDemand, DVDs and UMDs for my PSP. If I wanted to go the illegal route, I could rent a bunch of Netflix films and rip them to my computer -- or go on BitTorrent and steal them outright (some of them months before hitting DVD.)

What I really need right now is a device that will prevent me from entertaining myself so much so I can get more work done.

Windows users have the Windows Media Edition..

Which doesnt work with iPod.

I thought the whole point was to leverage iPod as a trojan horse into the living room. Seeing as 95% of iPod users are probably Windows owners, it makes sense to ensure any Mac DVR can read a Windows iTunes collections via AirTunes.

if only i had a time machine to see what happens on teu. AND to go back into time and invest in apple when it was like 12 bux a share :D

Cnt-fed / Sed

Also, from what I've been reading, Apple is getting great discounts from the manufacturers like Intel. That's why it's so cheap. I myself thought maybe they'd just reuse the 30" LCDs and it would equal the price point. Rolo, however, seems keen on CNT-FED technology (go wikipedia it). FED tech is apparently supposed to be cheaper to make than LCD and Plasma because it has less total components to it.

Steve said that he was pleased to get rid of CRT's because they do a big harm to the enviroment. Are these CNT-FED/SED better in this way, since they still using phosphor in the screen??? I googleed it and I'm not sure if they are better in this particular way...

Apple is already is a ridiculously overpriced stock. Honestly, do you think Apple is worth more than Sony? Sony has movie studios, recording companies, TVs, stereos, video games ... and consumer products and computers. Yet the market value of Apple is $20 billion higher than Sony. It's absurd -- Apple will NEVER be as big or valuable as Sony.

And what happens to Apple stock if Steve Jobs one day decides to become CEO of Disney and waves goodbye (again)?

But don't take my word for it: http://business.bostonherald.com/businessNews/view.bg?articleid=120123&format=&page=1

I would much prefer for Apple to introduce a nice 17" and maybe 19" or 20" displays, all widescreen, of course, and match the current style. Possibly making a 15" display would even be a good idea. I feel that Apple needs to have some displays that compliment the Mac Mini and give an option to people who don't want a large, expensive display. I think the 15" display would be adopted my the few businesses that use Macs for us in a POS or for users who just use their mini to browse the web, etc. Too many people have to resort to using Dell monitors. With all the crazy price guessing going on about Apple's suspected products at MWSF, I think $249 for the 15", $299 for the 17", and $399 for either a 19" or 20" model. What do you think? Good price points for some quality Apple displays? Think this is even remotely possible or even a good idea?

According to the boys over at Ars Technica the new Dell 30" LCD is priced to go, and Apple's current LCD lineup is not looking very nice next to it.

Read This

I hope this rumor is true, or that Apple at least drops the prices of their current LCDs to stay competitive.

/Three more pages of posts have been added to this thread as I read it. Holy crap, I am late to the game.

Very nice. if it had OSX i'd already have ordered one -

Thanks. Well it seems that most of the boxes only have HDMI, S-video and Component outputs. So a big F U to europe by leaving out Scart.

Pleases me to see that the HP television has a QAM tuner though. As that is what DVB uses IIRC.

If this turns out to bee true, I don´t think one can compare this to what happened with the iPod.
Items in that price range won´t fly off the shelfs in the way products that costs less do (even if they are expensive for what they are e.g MP3 player)

I might be proved wrong thogh, though I doubt it;)

Yeah, but everyone who needs a new TV is going to end up spending big bucks. Sure, a lot of people don't need new TV's, but for those who do...good price with some really spiffy stuff = good news for apple

I'd say that most consumers aren't ready to spend that kind of money. Film lovers, tv addicts and geeks, yes. But average consumers, no.

1k for a TV, yes. 2k+ for a TV ? I don't think, so. Not for the mainstream consumer anyway.

So I've finished reading 9 pages of posts...What can I conclude?

Maybe apple will release a top set box that plugs into the TV via ONE connector. Then, you use your nifty remote to select the input. You can play CDs/DVDs through the DC/DVD drive/iTunes, view slideshows off of a streaming slideshow (think iTunes streams), bla bla bla. The most important part though, is the ONE remote that you need to control everything with.

Front Row was just a public beta for all this.

So in the end of the day, you buy a TV, this apple device, plug it all in, and have ONE remote that uses graphics (not text-only menus) to navigate all of the media.

It's just what the doctor ordered.

I post back and forth on this thread it seems, and this rumor has aspects that seem plausible, and those that seem ridiculous. It really came out of the clear blue, which either makes it an Apple Leak (like Intel, to get us prepped) or it is a hoax.

Its rather strange that no obscure rumors have surfaced months ago about such a project; such as Apple striking a contact with a panel maker or the like. Before the nano was released, we knew about Apple sourcing memory, we just didnt know the use.

I don't like plasma TVs.....I think LCDs are better. And I don't see Apple getting into the TV business anytime soon.

Imagine the screen burn-in from just the dock and embedded icons alone! You would see the finder smiley icon every time you try to read the scrolling news bar on CNN! Then again, it might be nice to see at least ONE happy thing on the news, even if it is just a burnt-in image on your new $3,000 plasma set...

I don't think you guys get it ... this isn't just a display, it's a computer too. Note the part of the story where the plasma TV runs Tiger.

Now, does that make the rumor more or less reliable? I say less because it seems like a really bad consumer purchase ... wouldn't it be smarter to have a computer linked to a plasma so that you can upgrade in a more cost-effective manner? Keep the display for 10 plus years, but upgrade the CPU every 2 or 3?

I wondered the same thing, and the only practical solution is a hot-swappable or easily replaced motherboard/"computer". Like 42-inch HD display meets iMac meets Xserve: hot-swapple CPU and harddrive units in a big, flat display.

Monday rumors will be very hot!!! Can't wait!

It's strange that my girlfriend thinks that I'm dumb every time that I try to tell her about the rumors we discuss here... Pity.

As access to content continues to become increasingly important to Apple, a merger with Disney might make more sense.

Could be that they will use an existing supplier. There were rumors of a 42" and 50" ACD on the way.

We will have to 'wait and see'... But... rumors are flying around about something other than an 'Intel' Mac and/or new iPod being released...

Apple need to jump on the media center ASAP. I hope at MWSF next week. I am afraid the longer they wait the worse will be for them to regain their lead. I like the concept of the Itunes video store, but still very small. With all the competitors jumping in the market, Apple needs to blow us away next week and leap ahead everybody else. That's why I think these rumors could be true. The worst case we'll see this happening at NAB.
