It's as much an "ad" as this Steam preview was: https://www.macrumors.com/2010/05/0...for-mac-including-portal-and-team-fortress-2/
which is to say, not at all. :)

We preview some Mac and iOS software from time to time. They aren't paid ads. They all can't be "Steam for Mac" caliber announcements, but it's relevant Mac content that is exclusive to this site, and from a long term Mac developer. If you'd rather, we could always post another Verizon iPhone rumor. :)

Ha ha ... good one. I for one like the odd product info post along with the rumors. It's like having good news along with the not so good that rumors so often sadly are.

I, for one, am amazed by the number of people here who aparently don't know that message boards like these totally count as "social networking."

I'd tell them but it would probably make them sad. So I guess we'll just ignore it.

The app has been a mystery until today. For those following the story this is "breaking news" but I guess there haven't been all that many people following it. I was personally hoping for a sexier mail client. Realmac has a history of making really excellent software for OSX. Be thankful our platform can sustain companies like this who are creating new, beautiful and innovative products.

Finally; someone else who understands why this was posted. I also was hoping for a nice mail client, as well.

I'm a fan of RealMac software and already own two of their Mac apps (Rapidweaver & Socialite). RealMac software mentioned that a new app was in the works, but they didn't provide any further details. That means when MacRumors provided this information, it informed those of us who were following this story. So thank you MacRumors for sneak peak! :D

Sure, it's not the release of a new Mac app made by Apple, or another story about Flash, iPhone, the new iPod lineup, etc., but it's at least something new and more relevant to MacRumors than all the iPod news. Tbh, this is one of the first useful articles (to me) since maybe May or June.

If you don't like the app, don't hate on MacRumors and those of us who find this useful! :)

I would say the new Angry Birds update is more newsworthy than this. Next!

In a very distant way yes, specific product blogs like this are social networking (as is e-mail) but they are a long way from the FaceBook and Twitter type incarnations which I predict will peak and die off over time (I hope).

I completely agree. Honestly there aren't that many Indie Mac software companies that have more than one employee. I think it's great that MacRumors covers stories by our platform's "heavy hitter" indie developers such as Realmac, Panic, etc.

This is especially true because they are creating UI innovations that move the platform forward and even get picked up by Apple sometimes (the bookshelf UI in iBooks coming from Delicious Library's UI as a prime example). In this app, I've noticed the transparent search bar in the upper right that's not in the toolbar but actually included in the custom Collection View. Also, the wood scrollbar is an interesting touch, notice how the translucent background on the scrollbar makes it look "inlaid" into a groove in the wood? Someone put a lot of thought and work into making that look as good as it does.

What we really need is more rumors about Steve Jobs' private life. Scandalous affairs, underage sex parties, secret windows fetishes, etc.

I agree. It's one of those UI's that make you want to touch the screen instead of using the blasted mouse/trackpad.

Well, on twitter I just wished my sister a happy birthday and shared a potato recipe with a woman I know across the country.

On Macrumors I argued with some people about iPhone screen protectors.

Just based on today I'd say that Twitter is winning in terms of "making my life better."

Yeah OK. To me, the whole UI looks superfluous.. Do I really need to take up 75% of my MacBook screen real estate with this giant wooden shelf and envelopes to post a couple of pics to Facebook & Flickr? I think not.

Nope. Angry birds is an iPhone app, not a Mac app. Courier is for Mac, which is more relevant to MacRumors, yes?

Couldn't agree more. I love apps with a good looking UI. I'm considering picking up a copy of this, as it seems like a much easier way to share my photos and videos. Sure, iPhoto can upload to Flickr and Facebook, but Courier can upload to both at once.

The desk metaphor interface was used in Microsoft BOB too. Look how that turned out.

Hi Guys

Nik from Realmac Software here. Just wanting to clarify a couple of things - we're busy getting ready for launch tomorrow so please excuse me if I miss any points. I'll try and keep an eye on things and post when I can.

"Paid Placement of PR"

We didn't pay MacRumors for this preview. We don't do paid placement of articles, or pay for re-hashings of pre-releases. Period.

"Social Networking App?!"

There's been a tonne of questions about the app, but we'll of course be offering a free demo of the application so that folks are able to try it for themselves tomorrow and see what they think.

What about RapidWeaver?

We've already announced that RapidWeaver 5 will be launched later this year. The RapidWeaver team (which is entirely separate from our Courier team, in case you're curious) is hard at work on the next update - and as soon as we have more to announce we'll be doing so. These things take time, and by no means have we forgotten RapidWeaver.

Thanks,

Nik @ Realmac

What they've done is to take concepts that are very abstract and make them concrete by referencing real-world objects (letters). Sure you could write a shell-script and do it all from the terminal if you wanted and save yourself a ton of screen real-estate, but by making an app with these visual metaphors it's easy for anyone to see where their media is going.

Tks for dropping by, Nik...I will download the demo and check it out anyway.

I wish Realmac would spend some time on the only useful app they make - rapidweaver - and leave all this overpriced social networking stuff alone.

With your type of attitude the Mac will always be limited on software choice. "Just make one piece and leave the rest of it alone to Windows".

Surely, there is something in-between a Terminal CLI and a silly giant bookshelf with oversized envelopes?

I am not a 5 year old, I don't need a "visual metaphor" to navigate around an app. What's next? iTunes v10 redesigned into a giant kitchen cabinet with pull-out drawers for every type of my media?

As a mac owner, it is of interest to me, and I appreciate sharing the information.

I don't get people on this site... but I guess that explains why I have 200 people on ignore, and still get banned every 3 weeks.

Now that's an app I would pay for! Something that would routinely scan forum commentary to identify the never-ending stream of Apple bashers, trolls and astroturfers that flood the MacRumors forums these days and automatically add them to my Ignore list. Comment keywords: fanboy(s), cult, koolaid, crApple, Starbucks, etc.

The noise around here has become deafening. Surely this is a problem that could benefit from some computerized automation.

iTunes has tons of visual metaphors. The app appears resizable and might be on the larger size, but it's not crazy huge. If they had implemented the standard source list it would probably taken even more space. What would your ideal UI look like for an app like that?

If apple released this app, for $20, there would most definitely not be a large group of people preaching about its innovativeness. In fact there would probably be articles on CNN & Reuters asking if Apple has lost it's touch.

I suppose if you want to take the site's name literally as being only about rumors, a LOT of the front page content doesn't belong there. Maybe they need a secondary set of pages for more traditional software reviews, etc. which I also have an interest in reading etc. I used to read Mac World a lot, but I got kicked off their message boards within the first month (very very draconian policies there; basically if you disagree with a moderator on an OPINION about articles, they boot you out and I didn't even realize the person I was talking to was a moderator since it was their "after hours" account. That didn't stop them from answering my post as if it were a normal reply and then sending me a private "FU" type post and banning me without a word on the forums so it just looked like I left and never came back. That's a VERY professional staff there, if you follow my drift so I rarely even visit their site anymore. You get half the news on here as it is anyway, but like I said, some of it really isn't "rumors" but actual news.
