Yep

Consumers will eat up the iMac. The Pro users who cant wait will finish of the left-over Quicksilvers.

Then will come the main course:

G5's.

The trick is... will they pull it off? I know Jobs is betting on it. Let's hope that the Time cover does some of what it's supposed to.

That Time cover

It is amazing that Apple managed to pull off the Time cover. I don't remember the last time a product appeared on this venerated front page! Can you image "Dell's latest computer" appearing within the red rectangle. As tmx590 said earlier, it really is a mark of how well Apple are doing with their iMac strategy.

In the UK version of TIME we had the Euro on the cover instead - but the article was featured inside.

re: Time

You're absolutely right, Foocha. When has a Dell or a Compaq gotten that kind of exposure...For that matter, XP itself is still not exciting enough in the industry to warrant that kind of press... Truly impressive, Apple.

Yes

Time is a feat in itself.

I made myself go to Apple.com and look at all the footage and pics and specs ofthe iMac to giveit a second chance, and I have come to the conclusion:

I like it.

Damn it.

The new iMac really does rock!

Apple are looking better than ever - I feel sure we don't have long to wait for some great news on the pro line as well.

As Spikey said (strongly!) it's likely that Apple didn't announce the new pro line because they didn't want it to distract people from the new iMac.

How good is a G4 iMac going to sound if you announce the new G5 Mac on the same day? You'll just confuse the journos at TIME ;)

finally

of course you like it. You've been holding out too long. I am writing this on a 512RAM, 450Mhz, G4 tower with a 21 inch monitor, 'cause I'm on a network the only things directly attached to this are an enternal CD-RW ('cos when I bought it they weren't about), a zip drive (who the f**k uses zips anymore) and a usb local canon bj. So I could swap it for a top of the range iMac combo with superdrive (and prob 1GB) and get twice the power, half the cables and I admit a smaller screen, but that I could just about live with it.

Welcome to the fan club! They're good machines and since when has the megahertz myth disappeared from all postings. We KNOW that the G4 and soon to be G5 architechure is a superior shorter pipe, wonderful RISC technology thang, and the whole megahertz deal WILL become less relevant when finally the chip outstrips the needs and capabilities of all but the absolutely most demanding high end 3D rendered (pixar style) graphical work when a lot of people who do that are out of the game anyhow on silicon WS's.

(Nearly there I'm upto 28, now, I think)

Hmmmm...

Netscape.com became the default Mac portal in December

Netscape.com is owned by AOL TIME Warner

A Mac is on the front cover of TIME Magazine in January with a 5 page article that reads like an advertorial.

TIME Magazine is owned by AOL TIME Warner.

Spooky.

I only hope and pray that this is not a precursor to AOL TIME Warner buying Apple - having AOL 7 installed with every copy of OS X would be teeth grindingly awful.

Is it hot in here, or is it just me?

 Wow, it took forever for me to read this whole thread up to now. It's big, i'm serious.

I just hope I don't get hit by any stray monkey $#!+.

Anyways, I like the iMac. I have a G4-400. It's nice, but its getting old. It barely meets the requirements for iPhoto. The only thing that I use a PCI card for is SCSI, just because previous macs had it, and my scanner, zip drive, and CDRW were all SCSI too. But now, I have a firewire CDRW, and I never use my scanner or zip. The new iMac's screen is probably better, but I'm not sure. I have a 17" (same size) triniton.

The new iMac would be just perfect for me.

<rant>
One thing that i'm sick of, though, is people bitchin that OS X is too slow on a 600mhz G3, well I got news for you: It's pretty damm fine for me. Sorry I don't use a dual 800 G4 every friggin moment of my life.
</rant>

ok, now that that's over, I can continue.

So what if the design of the iMac is a little weird, Apple has put function and form together. It has a small footprint, the display is extremely adjustable, and it has all the features I drool over (except for limited RAM, but it's so cheap these days, it's no big deal.) So, stop your iMac bashing. If you're going to bash it, then back it up so we know where to aim when we shoot you down.

I just think that it would be nice to have a G5. I see it as more of a 'manly' thing. (I'm from Texas, you know, mines bigger, etc...) I couldn't have seen myself owning an iMac until the 7th. But now, that's changed, since it has a G4, and is pretty damm fast. Now, G5's would really kick @$$. I think I would perfer that over an iMac, just for the sheer power, and the fact that I allready have a decent monitor. oh well, just my $0.02

AOL on OS X as Default

Actually, if you look carefully at the iMac detail page Netscape is History. AOL has taken it's place as alternate installed browser.

Now watch the poop fly.

to do with p*nis size I fear

That's the entire debate in the Pc world or PCWorld.

How big's YOUR processor, etc.

"Manly' sword fencing, i reckon.

The difference between Intel's chips on the MHz scale don't make much realtime difference.

It's all posturing. When a seemless object such as an Imac with it's still true plug and go stuff is compared, the Mhz make no difference. How much time does it take to install any driver/device on a PC-based system?
Surely that should be added into the equation. How long for a reboot? How long to install a program? How long to take off all thouse annoying "helpful assitants and wizards taht interuppt even writing a simple letter?

This should all be added to the Mhz myth, there' s my 2 cents (euro cents, natch)

Oh spike...

I really didn't read your whole post, just skimmed through it. I think Foocha has a point about my responding to you (although how either of you got that I was sexually insulting you is beyond me). I've given your posts entirely too much weight, entirely too much attention, which with the way you write around here is clearly the only thing you're really looking for. "Stay away from the foolish man, for you will not find knowledge on his lips." Prov 14:7

But I'll say it again. Apple let some of us down this time around--again. Many Mac fans are happy and feel the hype was justified. I do not. And I am not alone. The new iMac, with all its great specs and questionable industrial design, was not enough. In fact, it was BS. Apple implied much, much more. And they utterly failed in that regard. Steve Jobs either lied, or he seriously has his priorities out of order. Either way, he goofed up big time.

Later.

Yeah and

how much crap do you need to write down when you upgrade the OS? (BIOS settings etc.)Macs? Nada. Not unless you bollux it or wipe the drive.

-Kethoticus.

Have a vodka shot, get out of the Eeyor suit and grab a girlie. This is a party not a wake! Apple isn't going out of business any time soon. In fact the new iMac should make for converts. The only folks that are dissapointed are those who expected Apple to go as far as WE can imagine. Besides, the year is just beginning so be patient. Don't make me call the chimp over.

mind you...

tiny gripe, why launch a great new machine directly AFTER the buying season for computers?

Pro buyers buy all year round. Comsumers and educators do not.

That's possibly why the new iBook launch resulted in the fast-selling apple ever (I've made that up but it must have been?)

Apple tradition.

If Macworld NY was moved to November and MWSF moved to April, It'd mesh better. Trust me, it sux being a Mac retailer once people figure out the schedule of releases just before christmas. This is why the last major iMac upgrade happened in late October.

Kethoticus - I was only joking about the whole "fag" thing.

I don't know about "sexually insulting" comments but I know some of us have been a bit too insulting on this thread.

I've appreciated many of your posts on this forum, just as I've appreciated many of Spikey's contributions.

New years resolution - let's all make an effort to get along in 2002! Sorry if that sounds corney - maybe I've been listening too much to the schmultzy music that comes with the iPhoto slide show ;)
