Of course we won't know for sure until it is released but I'll bet our faces will not be stored any more than our finger prints are stored with Touch ID.
i agree. that will most likely be the place the information is stored.

or at least thats what we're told. lol

So we are actively concerned about being handcuffed and a police officer putting our phone in front of our face to unlock it?
That is the worry?

I am just saying I haven't been in the particular scenario to give a ---- or how often does this happen to the user base on here?

They can take my wallet that has all of my credit cards, maybe my SSN card, any photo ID, my cash. No worries, jsut don't be snooping through my website history or 500 selfies and food pictures.

Something a little scary about this.... I mean it's not like robots will get this data in the future and use it to kill specific people... come back in time and kill off the rebellion ;)

This idea is ****ing horrible!!!! If you’re a twin like I am then there’s no point in even having this feature enabled. Every facial recognition that I’ve tried, my brother can unlock the phone. Which inevitably makes it pointless to set up. I wish they’d bring the touchID back.

If it's as buggy as TouchID, then I can't imagine too many people wanting to use it as their primary way of unlocking their phone.

I think you missed my point: it's not that people don't use their phones on a table/desk, it's that I doubt they use them at such an extreme angle (with regard to the user), that it would be out of the field of the camera - I mean, unless you're _under_ the table and reaching up and unlocking it without looking :D
Nope, I understood your point. I’m pretty sure I would be out of the field of view.

This is a great point and makes a good argument that a fingerprint is more secure and far more difficult to duplicate.

Also the phone goes from the pocket to my hand and before I even have the device in both hands ready to use it's unlocked.

Facial recognition alone confuses me other than the fact that the tech just isn't there. And that's a poor excuse to change.

My iPhone 6 Plus works probably 99 out of every 100 times.

For the issue of glancing at notifications, I think when you make eye contact within the device, it will become unlocked like placing your finger on Touch ID now, but nothing else will happen with your notifications. Then you’ll slide up from the bottom to get to your home screen.

"the iPhone 8 will be able to scan faces at various odd angles, including when it's flat on a table."

Having one's face flat on a table would indeed be an odd angle.

Problem: Touch ID (version 2) is so quick, you blast past your notifications when you press the home button.
Solution: Raise to Wake.

Problem: FaceID is so fast, you blast past your notifications when you look at your phone.
Solution: Deactivate FaceID and use Touch ID.

Problem: IPhone 'may' not have TouchID as it's been replaced by the more secure FaceID.
Solution: Use a passcode.

Welcome back to 2014!!!!

ios11 unlock doesn't go to the home screen, it stays on the notifications / "lock" screen, but unlocked.

This is officially the new version of "but someone could just cut your finger off and steal all your banking information from your phone! No touchID for me!"
Its so much easier to point a phone at someones face than grabbing someones fingers to press it on touch id.....no offense ;).

Touch ID in the power button? leaks have shown the rendered power button has a bigger surface area than the 6/6S/7...

At this point in time everything is speculation and wild rumour. It could be in the power button, hidden in the Apple logo on the back, actually exist under the screen after all, or of course not be present at all.

It is fun sometimes though to try and second guess Apple, though we’re often wrong if we’re completely honest.

I’m not reading too much into anything at this point, we’re getting close to the actual reveal. So either the rumours that exist for Apple dropping Touch ID are true, or Apple have managed to keep something very secret for a change.

I’m not sure about the home button though to be honest, it’s technically possible sure, but it’s too thin, we’d have to swipe our finger over it for it to collect all data points. I doubt that’s elegant enough for Apple.

Then again, I’m often wrong and just ramble on aimlessly. On the other hand, my ass is bigger than it was last year and it doesn’t do anything different either :D

And my Samsung Galaxy S8 has facial recognition AND iris scan options too!

Exactly man! It even comes with added functionalities which apple will never be able to add like the option to show your photograph with a lens attached to open the phone when you face an accident and screw up your face! (Pun not intended)

In addition, anyone the has your phone could unlock it simply by holding it up to your face, if it work as the article describes. Law enforcement, would not need a warrant to unlock your phone or even your assistance.

also, that new "press the wake button 5 times and then hit "cancel""-mechanism to switch off biometrics wouldn't work in a situation where your phone gets snatched by someone else. personally i wouldn't worry about that fringe case when law enforcement wants your data - there's a passcode for that - but for spouses or children getting easier access to your pivate data or the app store than with touchID.

Yeah, I meant how the technology works, how does the camera / phone sense that the phone is on the table, I glance at it and it unlocks, sounds intriguing!

interesting question. you're right, it shouldn't work when you're looking somewhere else or have your eyes closed. so it probably won't work with glasses that are opaque or reflective to the wavelength of their sensing technology. but tim cook got glasses, so it'll probably work with normal glasses from every angle.

Whats to stop someone taking my phone and pointing it at my face?

I’m going to hope that was sarcasm :D Do any of us actually seriously think that at no point has any Apple employee who’s even remotely connected to the new iPhone project said, wait a minute, couldn’t someone unlock this thing even if the owner isn’t holding it?

I very much doubt Apple are scrambling round panicking because they’ve read a forum and realised your phone doesn’t have to be about your person to use Face ID.

And on a side note, maybe it’s different where everyone else comes from. But speaking for myself, 99.9% of the time my phone will be any of, in my pocket, in my hand, on my desk in my office or on my nightstand when I’m in bed.

If anyone tried to make off with my phone without my permission during any of those times, it would be the last mistake they made for a while. Of course that could just be as a result of spending the first half of my childhood growing up in a town in Scotland where, well, if the world ever needs an enema I know where it’s going :D

Jesus I’ve had too much morphine and not enough caffeine. Or is it the other way around :p
