It was probably overlooked because it happened so quickly. I'm going to assume it just wasn't setup, I didn't think it was a big deal.

It was overlooked by him as well with his reaction and a call for a backup phone...

They ready devices and do hundreds of test-runs before a demo. It is A CLEAR FAIL of Face-ID.

If Face ID failed or not, it was a massive own goal by Apple.

It was presentation fail in that they clearly forgot about the need to unlock it once with passcode first. But it clearly wasn't a FaceID fail, which is unfortunately what the internet will choose to believe it was!

Oh it failed.... How many steps to use Apple Pay compared to Touch ID?

Face ID may not have failed Federighi, but Apple failed that demo.

IF a phone is restarted you have to enable Touch ID or Face ID with a passcode first. They do not work after being restarted. It does not Face ID or Enter Passcode, it says enable.

the message for that is "Your Touch ID was not recognized please use Passcode to unlock" Not the Enable wording

We understand the backup method. It's just perception of how the audience viewed the demo at the time.

It wasn't a Face ID fail per se, but certainly a keynote/demo fail

Still a huge fail on stage, too bad Craig didn’t notice that, plus what the heck the demo model wasn’t enabled to use face unlock?

Hopefully the demo room will have media setting up FaceID and using it.

    That is not the case.
They prep devices to a "ready to use" state and do several dry runs before.

You can see from the graphic alone that it wasn't prepped. Human error happens. That's not the message displayed when Touch ID/Face ID fails

While this may be the case, the memes for the 'FAILED' Face ID are already being made.

So should we judge you by your somewhat weird post? :D

Maybe the service didn't fail, but Face ID and custom emojis being the highlighted features for the X model that cost that much more = fail.

You know, I always hate having to enter my passcode after restart, maybe this will do away with that.

I’m surprised someone didn’t clearly mention what happened and do a few more unlocks.

I don’t really care, I don’t want Face ID replacing Touch ID plain and simple. CIA is probably having a field day with announcement of this Bionic-aware SoC

People thought it would be spatially aware to unlock your phone laying on a table, and that proved not true. It needs direct line of sight. This is where TouchID has a leg up. I can rest my finger on my phone not facing me, and still unlock it!

Also, when it did unlock, it seemed to take longer than I would’ve thought to go from Lock to home screen

    To each his own,

The preso was sloppy, and I came away unimpressed

Incorrect, it says "after restarting" after a reboot, this message happens if you scan incorrectly several times.

The video they showed indicates it can be laying flat and not pointed directly at you.
