While this may be the case, the memes for the 'FAILED' Face ID are already being made.
This is why that was 100% intended, just like the removal of the headphone Jack this will bring the iPhone X discussion go viral again.

Btw I thought it was the reboot message too, but upon further research the reboot, failed scans, and 48 hours messages are all distinct. That was a failed scan message.

"Your passcode is required to enable Touch ID" is the message I just got on my iPhone 6s+ after trying with the wrong finger four times. When someone likely has an iPhone with Touch ID right in front of them to double-check the message, and still posts a thread like this defending Apple...

Looks at the Video again, embarrassing. He should have played it off with

"o.k. let's set it up first and then we will unlock it with Face ID"

Why didn't he do that? Simple. They have issues with it, it's the reason there is a 2 month GAP for release date.

So let me get this straight - main reason for FaceID over TouchID, as presented by Apple in the keynote, is the 1:1000000 (as opposed to 1:50000) chance of mistake. And yet, all that's really needed to unlock the phone after a restart is a freaking PASSCODE (which most people will opt to be just 4 numbers)? Sounds legit.

Don't think they have issues with it. Just a case of the main software guy at Apple forgetting how his software works. Nothing to worry about, really. :p

iOS 9+ defaults to six digits as far as I know. The odds of successfully guessing a 6-digit passcode are a lot lower.

6 Digits Are Better Than 4! iOS 9 to Boost Passcode Security

What a mess!

Even on the 2nd phone, the FaceID seemed a LOT slower than 2nd gen TouchID we have in the 6S and 7.

Of course the loyalists are going eat it up anyway and then Apple will come out iPhone X2 next year with FASTER, BETTER FaceID.

Thats pretty much directly pointed at her

On the same plane
She is peering down at it. Not a natural seated position. I get the feeling of quite a lot of expectation management on Apple's part. Including the "joke" about evil twins. I think they anticipate some lookalike success defeating FaceID.

I refuse to debate semantics of this ad nauseum, sorry, i simply don’t have the will or care enough to... I’m not on the full blown offensive against the X, I just have serious reservations about it thats all. I don’t think I’m alone

1) its a marketing slide and

Her head is peering/hovering over the general direction of the X, with it still in its line of sight,

This will not be reproducible with my face staring the tv, and the phone off to the side of the couch, or on a night stand, from an angle perspective, even if I’m looking at it

Agree to disagree,

Not asking you to...

Sorry, I could just see an avalanche of defenders of Apple saying “NO BUT!”

I’ve stated my case, and that’ll be my case unless i hear otherwise from a massive group of impartial users not tied to Apple, or experience it myself to be drastically different

Goes back to my original thing: even if tech is perfect, I’m not desiring for this to replace Touch ID. Complement, maybe, I guess, but replace?

I guess let Schiller refer you to the Wayne Gretzky quote that Jobs quoted once :)

Up there with “courage” and “cant innovate anymore my —“

They ready devices and do hundreds of test-runs before a demo. It is A CLEAR FAIL of Face-ID.
It may have been a fail for a demo, but it wasn’t a fail for the feature. Whoever set it up probably rebooted it and forgot to enter the passcode. Sure they do hundreds of test runs, but Apple isn’t immune to lapses in judgement. But the feature worked as intended.

I am fully expecting Face ID to be at least as much of a pain to use as Touch ID. I dislike Touch ID almost as much as I dislike Siri for ease of use, reliability, and predictably of behavior.

It felt really weird to me too, the guy presenting Apple Watch 4, had to go over to the table and put it on to take the call

He couldn't have been wearing it all along and concealed it until it came demo time?

I just tried to fail the Touch ID by using a different finger and I received the same message: "Your passcode is required to enable Touch ID" I was able to do this without restarting my device as implied by other posts in this thread.

Screencapture clearly shows it hadn't been passcode unlocked.
