Can’t tell if you’re trolling but Touch ID is prone to failure when skin is either a little too dry or a little too wet, and I have the newest iPad mini with it built into the side button and it’s so awkward to use that I just end up punching in my code 95% of the time.

Face ID just works. The hate for it honestly baffles me.
If FaceID just works then why do I see countless people constantly entering their code because they can't get FaceID to work? My wife and mother in law pretty much just enter their code nearly exclusively. They can never get the right angle.

And how has FaceID been wearing a mask? I know that 15.4 permits masks now, but that didn't help for the last TWO YEARS when TouchID would have been far more helpful and you HAD to enter your passcode. I have TouchID on my 2021 MBP and still love it. Your issues with wet/dry fingers are overstated. You also would have trouble on the touchscreen with wet fingers so...maybe dry your fingers?

‘Countless’ people? Usually when I see adjectives like that, it’s exaggerated. Is Face ID perfect? Absolutely not, but it’s still executes a higher sense of security over touch ID, even though they both have their advantages and shortcomings. But the evidence is clear, that face ID is Apples future and hasn’t been superseded by any other biometric technology since its debut with the iPhone X.

Go watch 10 people who aren't really fluent in technology unlock their iPhone with FaceID. Report back how many have to try multiple times and/or end up entering the code. It's not intuitive for a lot of people. It's also really annoying at times to have to put the phone exactly in front of my face so I can use it. This topic has been exhausted on MR, I know.

Can these mockups be updated to match the leaked schematics? The pill and hole are wayyyyyy too small in these. The real thing is much larger, and people should start getting used to that rather this impossibly small, fake version.

If this is what is going to be posted every other day until September, I suggest updating it.

Can we not call it dual-hole? It's an i, for iPhone.

Hopefully we can add am/pm and battery percentage back in. The clock always looks incomplete and I still miss the percentage. Otherwise I don't mind the notch still unless I'm watching widescreen video. I've been noticing more YouTube channels outputting widescreen video in the iPhone aspect ratio so this will be nicer for that.

Can we please forget FaceID altogether and just have TouchID on the side button? Please? FaceID is awful.

Curious why it's awful, in your opinion? It never....I mean never not works for me. Unless you're talking about in this new mask life, but that won't be a concern when this releases.

I see users all the time who can't get it to work and they end up using their passcode (like my wife and mother in law). If it was so great, they wouldn't have issues like that regularly. It also requires me to pick up my phone for unlocking needlessly (like when I want to just leave it flat on the table and use it).

I meant like when you get out of the shower or were washing dishes, your fingers are unreadable for like 20 minutes. Never had that be a problem with Face ID.

What angles are they facing their phone at? You literally just hold your phone and look at it and it unlocks.

Adding Touch ID tomorrow won’t change anything about the last two years. Weird to want an old feature to replace a new feature out of bitterness.

I have Touch ID on my mbp as well, super awkward to reach for overtop the keyboard and has the same readability issues with dry or barely pruned skin. Would prefer Face ID on a mbp any day of the week.

I wouldn't get rid of FaceID just because of wearing masks, but for the other reasons I've cited here. The pandemic just made FaceID completely useless. I can only say I have never had the wet/dry issue ever prevent me from unlocking my phone - ever. Can't relate to that problem at all. How are you going to use the touch screen of your phone if your hands are wet anyway?

Like right now I want to use my phone as it's sitting the sofa arm. I have to fully pick it up in order for it to unlock or else I have to enter the code. With TouchID I could leave it sitting there. Much easier. I'm always going to touch my phone to use it, so might as well have touch unlock.

Why didn't they do this with the Macs they released, instead of having the notch? There is no consistency between products.
Maybe due to the iPhone having OLED screen vs LCD on macs? The nature of OLED makes it easier to have uniform lighting on irregular cutouts. On LCD, it's much harder to prevent backlight bleeds/blooming.

I don't mean any harm, but sounds like user error. Have them remove all faces and train again. It's FaceID, so when the phone comes on, it's looking for a face. In your case with it laying flat on a table, why are you expecting it to work unless you are looking down at it.

Don’t worry guys, Apple wont actually make use of the added screen real-estate just like the 13 and you’ll just get to experience the magic of a blown up status bar rather than useful info like a battery percent or your status bar icons like those outdated iPhones from the past.

For iPhone 16/17; If Apple plan to replace current faceid for under-display facial authentication than the hope for under screen TouchID is over. I have a hard time letting go touchid iPhone to switch over to notch iPhone. I am waiting for under-screen Touchid in iPhone 14 or 15 but that looks like will never happen.

I'm just here to see all the whiner posts about how "bad" this looks..... Some will whine about anything lol.

Don't have an issue with the notch... don't have an issue with this design. Guess I just use my phone and am happy when it does what I want it to do.... notches, camera bumps etc aren't a big deal to me.

Just when Apple finally corrected the MacBook Pro design mistakes they now are making new mistakes with the iPhone. I am lost on why they think this goofy pill + hole punch is superior to a notch. It doesn’t seem to free up any useful screen real estate and looks really odd and asymmetrical. Not a fan at all.

Apple has lost its sense of innovation. If they were smart, they would put a screen on the back, and remove the front camera. Then you could use the good back camera for selfies, and the main screen would be nice and clean. Selfies would benefit from all the main camera performance features. The back screen would have other benefits, such as being able to view some info when the phone is face down - a clock display, a night light for locating it in the dark, etc. The whole 'notch' garbage is a crummy workaround that was pushed by marketing to a gullible public for a problem that couldn't be solved, and now everyone thinks it's cool.

Can we ditch the "right or wrong" narrative around Touch ID and Face ID?

Both have unlocking scenarios where they're superior to the other. And everybody has a personal story about when one worked or didn't work for them (that tends to cater to their personal preference).

They're both great options in numerous scenarios. One isn't more right or wrong than the other...

Let's hope rumors don't become reality because the pill + hole is ridiculous, and even if it was a slightly taller and wider pill, it should join the top of the screen rather than be where the mock designs suggest.

Apple, don't give me yet another excuse to again not upgrade from my iPhone XS.
