I am wondering if the face id truedepth whatever system is just facing in a 90degree angle? so can it really throw out the dots in a diagonal direction?

Got,to admit I’ve struggled for it to work on a table too will see how it is when at work desk
good to know.
For me it is at least a huge problem to comfortable unlock my phone while it is laying on my desk :-(

It's working fine and as advertised for me. Have already forgotten the home button. Swiping almost immediately and the face id catches it - not waiting for the padlock to unlock. Fast reliable - works more often than touch id and fingerprints. absolutely no complaints.

What are your Face ID settings? As switching off require attention for Face ID seems to make it easier.

When I’m in bed and the phone is on my side table it’s fine. It’s also fine when on the floor when I look st it

Face ID is crap and one of the reasons I returned it. Went to work yesterday and it didn’t work lying on my desk. I had to pick it up every time. I didn’t need to do that with Touch ID. All I had to do was push with my thumb.

Anyone who tells you otherwise is a blind fan boy lol

havent tried it yet but I dont really want to lower the security level just to get better results. Would be better if apple could just update face id sensor in some way..

You say that you dont have any problems with unlocking your phone while it is laying 20-30cm away from you on you desk?

NEWSFLASH: Face ID must see your face to work.

I mean - sure..I'm in the US so we're all about inches and 30 cm is what...almost a foot..so yeah - if it's sitting a foot away, I kind of lean over toward it..but who cares - does that mean face Id doesn't work as advertised? Not really - it is honestly so much better than touch id for me and having to lean over a bit to get my face works perfectly. I don't need to look at it from across the room and expect it to get my face to think this is working pretty well.

No fanboy here. Sounds like you needed to go through the setup process again.

Everyone with iPhone X.. try to unlock like it is advertised in apples videos.
See screenshot below. It does not work for me in this angle.

How are your results??
Works for me at that angle with phone flat. Just tap phone to wake and swipe up.

Not quite like in the ad. I can leave it flat on table and move my face over it more than in ad and it works; or I can sit like this woman and lift phone up a bit and it works. But I can’t replicate the positions of phone and woman in ad exactly and have it work :) That is okay, it has worked in any of my natural use applications, including wearing aviator sunglasses and a hat/toque at same time.

odd that half of people say that it does not work like on the picture. but ok, maybe we got one of those models where apple reduced error tolerances :D hahaha just kidding. it is definitely random that everyone gets difficult results.

ok sorry about t
False. I have used it successfully several times while my phone is laying flat on a desk/counter/arm of chair.

I've updated my post. Turns out I had been unlocking my phone like this the whole time and not noticing it. I seriously think this is the best phone I've ever owned. Haven't had this feeling since Nokia 8890.

On a side note. Im probably in the minority here but I'm actually just using the phone as one would in every day life. Unlike countless others. Im not actively trying to break features and such. It took me about 15min to get used to not having a home button. And just this afternoon a finally realized how to properly close out applications.

I've made several posts about the effectiveness of FaceID, along with it working well in a number of lighting scenarios - additionally, how it works off [perpendicular] angle, and not only vertical, but horizontal.

Funniest thing in this thread? The user who stalks any anti-iPhone-X posts, and 'likes' them, regardless of their hyperbole and/or *painful* technical inaccuracy.

Ha that is actually really funny! I guess goes to show how little you need to think about it?

I am just using it too. I am admittedly not tech-savvy enough to know how to even start to try and break features. I am just using it normally as I would (texting, phone calls, browsing, watching YouTube/Netflix, taking photos of my cat (lol), streaming Spotify. I am very pleased!

This pic you have isn’t for unlocking phone but to lower volume/alert on phone when looking at it while ringing/notification.

To be honest i feel like its a waste of time. Im usually working, watching binging shows and reading all at the same time (or so i think, lol). I simply don’t have the time to actively create problems. However, when the phone does not operate while I’m living out my normal routine. Thats when it becomes a problem.

i think that angle shown in the photo is right on the border of what is and is not acceptable..

it will work sometimes as shown in the photo.. but not reliably enough to use it like that all the time..

for me, if the phone is on a table like that (well.. when it's even further away or worse angle), i've been doing it like so..

• tap the screen
• swipe up
• lift or tilt the phone up.

it will then open without needing to swipe anymore.. (like-- you can swipe up 10-15 seconds prior to scanning and it will still open once it sees you)

-------
fwiw-- the chair at my current desk is lower than normal and my backrest is way back.. so my angle is likely a lot worse than being shown in the photo... i haven't used the X at my work desk yet where i keep my chair higher up/less casual.. i'll be trying that out tomorrow so maybe it works more reliably in that situation

I think at the very least faceid is inconsistent for this use case. I can’t bring a phone to work so I guess I’m unaffected by this. I hope it can be fixed for these folks as it seems to be advertised as working on a table.

With future FW updates, FaceID will get better. This is why I like Apple. Android is on so many devices. When Face ID comes to many new Android devices, trying to get timely updates to fix their issues will be a headache. In most cases, you have to wait for the carrier to send the update, not the manufacturer. Apple bypasses the carrier, and we get fixes so much quicker.
