Went to work yesterday and it didn’t work lying on my desk. I had to pick it up every time. I didn’t need to do that with Touch ID. All I had to do was push with my thumb
a suggestion for using touchID when it's far out on a desk etc..
register an index finger as one of the prints.
it's better than using a thumb in those instance.
;)

odd that half of people say that it does not work like on the picture. but ok, maybe we got one of those models where apple reduced error tolerances :D hahaha just kidding. it is definitely random that everyone gets difficult results.

it's because we're not testing it under controlled environment..

i mean-- you can most definitely unlock the phone while you're in a chair and the phone is on a desk.. that, to me, is without question..

however, our ideas about matching the angle exactly as shown in the picture varies.. so some will say yes and some say no..

but like i said earlier, i believe the picture to be showing basically the maximum allowed angle.. and i think this thread shows that as some will say no some will say yes.. some are trying it within that angle.. others are trying it on the other side of the angle.

You guys do know that image was artificially made right?

it doesn't matter how it was made really.
it's an advertisement depicting usage of the phone.

personally, i wouldn't consider it as false advertisement since the trueDepth camera can see you at or near that angle..
if she leaned back a little bit then she'd be out of range.

It does matter. Remove the special effects and you just have a lady sitting looking at an iPhone. Who said she trying to unlock it? Maybe shes shes talking to siri.

Did everyone think that buying an iPod was gonna magically give them rhythm?

ok.
i don't feel like arguing about this.

if you don't think that's an image representing her using trueDepth system then fine..
i happen to think it is.

agree to disagree.

Maybe you shouldn’t have responded. Reason i pointed it out because it was obvious that that screen grab was NOT pulled from a feature demo. It was pulled from an advertisement. Have you never seen a commercial before?

I've had problems with it laying in bed, but it's been fine otherwise for me. Still getting used to seeing the unlock and swiping.

Face ID doesn't work unless you're holding the phone. Its a security feature.

Edit: Looks like I was wrong. Just tried it myself while having my phone lay flat on the counter. However it is limited in range, which could explain why that screen grab is a little misleading. However apple did have a commercial for the iPhone 6 with a cyclist in the rain.

Yeah, I've got a stand I put my iPhone X in. It can unlock if I just touch the screen. It sits about two feet from my face at about a 39 degree angle (measured with my phone, lol). Works perfectly every time.

That explains it.

Just a heads up. Justice league is not a documentary.
i don't even know what Justice league is.. fwiw.

go to 1:10 on this video

are you really suggesting i'm supposed to think "Oh, why would i think this is talking about unlocking.. maybe she's talking to Siri"
?

Well one thing is very clear from that video...the iPhone X didn't unlock when she was looking at it around 1:10.

start watching at 1:10
stop watching when the context is done.

nothing.. you're the one that started arguing in this thread.
and for real, i have no idea what your point is.

is it that the image is artificially made?
is that your exact point?
because if so, cool.

or are you implying something else with your original statement to me?
because if so, please clarify what you mean.
thx

Sir,

Just stop. I wasn’t arguing anything at all. You might want to check all of my replies in THIS thread.

Can confirm it doesn’t work at that angle. I have to lean my face in quite a bit when my phone is on my desk.

To those stating that this feature is working, could you kindly do this little experiment:
Put the phone on the desk, next to the right side of your keyboard & mouse/touchpad.
Unlock it with face Id while sitting on your chair, left hand on the keyboard, right hand on the phone.

This is my normal setup at work and my major concern about face Id. If it does not work well I will rather stay with my touchID setup

I dusted off my only Nokia Qi Charger “dock”. My phone sits at a 79 degree angle. A tap wakes the screen and looking at it opens it. Added bonus is my phone stays charged withournfiddking with a cable.

My wife also just bought a Samsung branded one that is similar for her phone for the night stand. I’ll likely get another for the house and eliminate plugging in cables all together. They’re (Nokia) about $12 without cables on eBay and $20 with all necessary cables. They even come in white and black to match you’re X ;)

If only Apple would’ve come to the conclusion that wireless charging was worth it when everyone else did.

I have a little experiment for you as well. While seated at you computer. Hold out your right hand. Put a liberal amount of baby powder in it. Then slap yourself for requesting such a thing.

Im joking of course

Mine will not work at an angle...at all. Flat on my desk with my head a few feet or a few inches away - nope.

I even redid my FaceID and exaggerated my head movements more to get more of my 'underside' of my face but to no avail. Not a deal breaker. It works.

My dream scenario though is to have my phone charging flat on my desk and to glance over at it and show me my alerts.

this is also my experience, face id works in everything, except when its there on my table at a certain angle. I will need to pick it up to recognize my face... otherwise its working great in any other scenario almost forget its there actually

Everyone with iPhone X.. try to unlock like it is advertised in apples videos.
See screenshot below. It does not work for me in this angle.

How are your results??

It works for me at this angle. But on the second scan I scanned it at this angle purposely. Try that.

Apple is amazing when it comes to Advertising/Marketing. They are the only company that can make commercials that show portrait lighting working in video or hype up Face ID with the infamous picture of the lady in the swimming pool, yet the features doesn't even work as advertised. And each year they still have people lining up for each release.
