They couldn't just create their of GIF system for less than $400M?

They seem to be very lazy. Why make it when you can buy it, and kill off most of it.

I thought *some were going to break up big companies like Facebook, why do they still allow huge companies to
swallow up all the smaller and lots of time good services, Whatsapp comes to my mind, just a shame.

*Not going into details here.

If you got the money they contribute, you'd think they were best buds too...

It is a shame to see Giphy go. When Facebook collapses it is going to do a lot of damage to the web.

Unfortunately, the Facebook company is not going anywhere. They continually buy any company that poses a risk to their dominance. The Facebook website is not popular with younger generations, they say Facebook is for old people, but Instagram has taken over that lost market share.

These acquisitions will only strengthen their dominance.

*Deletes GIPHY account*

I didn't know they offered accounts. *shrug*

What an odd acquisition. Giphy's entire business model is dependent upon not being sued for violating copywrite law. I mean, gif's aren't transformative and they probably don't fall under fair use. I assumed the reason most people didn't pursue it was because it wasn't financially beneficial to be the first to push it through court. But with Facebook money behind it however...

Why do people hate so much Facebook?
I've never liked social network, and try to use them the least I can. But honestly, I just don't see how Facebook is so evil.

Yes, they use personal data to target ads. So what? They do offer a free service that a lot of people enjoy.

400M? What a joke. How much is a junky animated gif worth? .00012 cents?

Maybe you should read upon all the data breaches, privacy scandals, fake news distributing...and interfering with *********...amongst lots of other issues.

I was wondering when this would happen, with Facebook’s built in support for Giphy

People in here dooming and glooming Facebook’s demise need to accept the reality it’s pretty much here to stay. This is not the dot com era of frivolous companies or companies with no strategic vision behind it. Facebook, Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon. They are all behemoths that are here to stay whether we like it or not. Even IBM is still around.
