Fake News happen everywhere. Be it Twitter, Google, Facebook, WhatsApp, iMessages, etc. Any popular social media platform is bound to have fake news from their users.

Data breaches is indeed a problem. But it is a problems many companies have because of poor security.

But my point is, just be reasonable with what you share in Facebook, and I can almost guarantee no problems will arise.
I've had a Facebook account for over 10 years, and have never had a problem so far.

Seems like you live in a different world than me.

It is a shame to see Giphy go. When Facebook collapses it is going to do a lot of damage to the web.

I'll cope celebrate !

I have no Facebook account yet through their lecherous data mining tentacles, they still know about me.

If you think that they only thing they do with all the data they harvest is target adverts, well you need to research and learn more about them. Corporate Spyware of the highest order.

Facebook like Google has files on each and everyone of us even if we have no direct connection to their sites. This is because people you know have FB and Google accounts. We are all fair game for them in their quest to sell data to Advertisers who can use that to sling adverts at us.
Mention something in an email to someone with a gmail account and you will get adverts for that thing. That's how these data slurpers work.
Then there are all the frameworks that lazy web designers use that feed information to all sorts of slurpers behind your back.
Their aim in life is to suck all the data that they can from you and sell it.

They couldn't just create their of GIF system for less than $400M?

Market cap of ~$590B, $71B in revenue, $400M is a pretty small blip in terms of an acquisition for FB. Giphy I see back in '17 was doing 200M daily hits (web and API), and according to another article, around 50% of GIPHY’s traffic comes from Facebook: FB itself, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp - I'm sure this will be all sorts of behavior and tendency analysis for ad platforms, etc., especially since I read Giphy had something under development in that capacity.

Ugh.

I guess I'll have to source my Homer backing into the shrubbery GIFs somewhere else. o_O

Oh what the heck, one for the road ...

I don't know if anyone heard or not, but they claim to want to integrate it into Instagram.

Why?

Gifstagram? Instagif?

I'd guess for use in both comments, and for possibly some kind of overlays (in particular, for video). It becomes like another connection point with the user, if the backend tracks the use (which is does). So you use the same GIF in two different places, connected via the common distribution mechanism of Giphy, your behavior, patterns, likes, etc., are being profiled.

I deleted Facebook.
then Instagram.
now giphy.

FB used to be singularly pernicious, but is also a hoovering grim reaper like ATT, Google and Verizon who buy good companies and just wreck close or sell them or subsume them into their lousy platforms.

You post as if A: You can control what data FB Hoover’s up B: You know the reach of the tracking that FB uses without you ever visiting FB C: the “partners” FB sells your data too.

Gruber:
“Of course Giphy is going to retain its own brand. If they renamed it to “Facebook Tracking Pixels”, usage might drop off. Think about all the messaging apps that don’t offer Facebook integration for security/privacy reasons where Giphy images appear. You know, like Apple’s Messages. Well, now Facebook has tracking pixels in them.”

Good thing Giphy uses Sign In With Apple and you can remain anonymous. If Facebook pulls that, we’ll know exactly why and delete the app.
