I would say if there is any group of three people who could create something that can compete with Apple's and Google's ecosystems, it's those three.
And yet, you'd likely just be trading one devil for another, and in the long run they'd be no less motivated by profit, no more dedicated to privacy, and no better at protecting user information.

Nowadays everyone wants to slam Apple App Store. It’s dumb!

How about coming up with your own platform?

Gee if only you could, but since the Apple App Store is the only one allowed on iOS you can't. I would kill for Steam to be able to distribute games on iOS. Damn better service platform than the App Store and Game Center, because at least with Steam I could get a refund if the game didn't work or was a sham. Hell I can actually navigate and find games on Steam than the App Store.

I just don't understand the logic of this. ALL brick and mortar retailers curate their products and take a cut. Nobody is suing Nordstrom, for example, to carry Kohl's brands. If one doesn't like what Nordstrom carries, they need to shop elsewhere and in this case use a different phone platform. Isn't it just that simple?

Last time I checked the App Store belonged to Apple. They do get to decide who they do business with.

Disney charges a bundle to get into their parks. Many say "it isn't fair" (yet many more still visit). Disney built it and they get to set the price. The average person isn't going to "build their own Disney park" but plenty of other amusement parks not owned by Disney already exist and are free to charge what they feel is appropriate.

I understand the attacks against Apple, but shouldn't they also be asking for government intervention with Disney, Starbucks, Krispy Kreme, Porsche, and other places that charge a premium as well?

PA needs to force KK to build a closer location!

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Spotify CEO Daniel Ek today spoke out against Apple's App Store policies, joining Twitter CEO Elon Musk, who earlier this week said that Apple was making moderation demands and had threatened to withhold Twitter from the App Store.

At The New York Times DealBook Summit, Zuckerberg said that only Apple attempts to limit the apps that are in the App Store, and that the App Store policies are not sustainable. As noted by CNBC, Zuckerberg claimed that Apple has "singled themselves out as the only company that is trying to control unilaterally what apps get on a device," which is not a "good place to be."

Zuckerberg went on to praise Google for allowing for alternate content on Android phones. "They’ve always made it so you can sideload and have other app stores and work directly with phone manufacturers," said Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg has clashed with Apple several times over App Store rules, specifically around various purchases that can be made in the Facebook app. Apple wants a 30 percent cut of things like in-app boosts, which Facebook does not want to pay.

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, meanwhile, made comments on Twitter claiming that Apple gives developers "the illusion of control," and that the App Store is a "threat to the future of the internet" that denies consumers choice.

Ek has clashed with Apple recently over Spotify's new audiobooks feature. Apple rejected Spotify's audiobook update several times and ultimately did not allow Spotify to direct users to purchase audiobooks through an in-app email signup button.

Ek and Zuckerberg are longtime Apple critics and have been encouraging lawmakers to force Apple to support alternative app stores on iOS devices to reduce fees. Multiple bipartisan bills have been introduced in the U.S., and if these are ultimately passed, Apple would need to make significant App Store changes.

Tesla charges too damn much for its cars. They should drop their prices by the same % they think Apple should reduce their App Store charges. The same thing is true about Facebook and Twitter ads and how much Spotify charges

Moderation demands are silly. I can open up Safari and pull up any porn website I want. I can search for sex videos and see 10's of 1000s. Shouldn't safari moderate that? No it should not. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, even old sites like Pirate Bay only posted what users posted. They shouldn't be liable for this content, neither should Safari.

By the way you can search google for torrents just as easily as you could in pirate bay, nobody ever sued google over it.

No, just the better guy.

Always pick the better of two evils.

Do you think mentioning factories, which is off topic, makes you win an argument about music stores? Bad try.

Blame Foxconn for factories, which is off topic. We know from 2 decades of articles especially 15 years ago that Apple sent them regular inspectors to improve conditions. It was a couple of dozen factory workers over many years.

Now compare that to:

Facebook screwed millions of people around the world and Spotify screwed thousands of artists.

How is Apple blameless for the factories they contract? But Spotify is somehow to blame for what an artist negotiates with their label? Spotify does not pay artists anything, they pay labels.

I’m all up for side loading but I know the truth is that Facebook will immediately require users to side load their app which has every shady data mining feature turned on if you want to use their service
Side Loading isn’t means to skirt around keeping your privacy in tact, it’s a way to not be handcuffed by all of Apples demands on a share of your profits.

If you really don’t want Facebook to have any of your data, just don’t install Facebook or have a Facebook account. What do you realistically see Facebook doing with your data if side loaded compared to installed directly?

Even at the very minimum, allowing side loading would allow us to open beta apps to more than just Apple’s limited numbers on TestFlight.

If Apple improved its services, there would be a lot less push against their practices. The 10,000 device limit on TestFlight is beyond ridiculous and just a way for Apple to assert control.

And yet, you'd likely just be trading one devil for another, and in the long run they'd be no less motivated by profit, no more dedicated to privacy, and no better at protecting user information.

If they are just trading the gun for the knife they would have no differentiation and thus would not survive in the marketplace.

I don't use Facebook, spotify or twitter but I think 30% is too high, make it 10% and you will still make money and might not need to change the rules. If not, congress will make it happen at some point.
I have no issue with Apple wanting a 30% cut. I have issues with their rules. If their filters allow crap like Facebook and copycat apps on the AppStore but bans useful emulator apps, the rules are stupid.

And when you made the decision to buy the phone you AGREED to use their services. You did not HAVE to buy an iPhone.

There are many things you buy but are still restricted on what you can do with it.

So answer the question everyone else seems to avoid... why does Apple lock users into using the App Store on the iPhone, but doesn't on the Mac? What makes those two devices so vastly different that its OK for me to download any app I need from the web, or by a license from a third party, buts its impossible on my iPhone?

You hate Apple's stance so badly, leave their platform. Show them who's boss. ;)
The reason your comment works with the wink is because of the power imbalance. We all know they can't actually leave Apple's platform without severe damage to their business model (if not their company's existence). But that's also why we should pay attention to their views on this issue. Right now, Apple can dictate nearly everything it wants to. That's not good for app developers, and it's ultimately not good for consumers.

Why would I care? Its their company and services, they get to decide how they run it.

Freedom and capitalism.

You can't shout about it only when it benefits you.
