Background refresh doesn't matter. Facebook app uses a loophole with VoIP to run in the background. It uses your battery and data when you don't want it to do so. The only way it will change is if enough people delete the app AND leave one star reviews for the app at the iTunes Store. And better yet get your family and friends to do the same.
Yes we all need to do it this. And either use friendly app or delegate fac book app and use Safari online version instead. That won't use up battery and load up Dara.

Thanks for the friendly app recommendations everyone. Just downloaded it and gave Facebook a review. I noticed the battery drain but never knew what to do about it.

I haven't had a problem with Facebook using a ton of battery, though I have mine set to only use location services while the app is in use, notifications are turned off, and background refresh is turned off.

Does anyone know what version of the Facebook app started doing this? Could downgrading the app resolve the problem?

This used to happen to me. I resolved it by turning back on background app refresh, scrolling down to facebook and turning it off, then turning off background app refresh again. Sounds nuts but worked for me. I no longer get any facebook background activity.

It'll still refresh even if you do that now.

I'm also seeing battery drain between 40-45% since upgrading the fb app yesterday. I tried deleting and reinstalling it hoping maybe that will help. I've also completely disabled location services (before I had it set to "while using the app"). For many versions this app has shown background app usage despite being disabled for background app refresh. I think this last version is the worst I've seen with battery drain. One thing to add would be that if the app is running in the background regardless of background app refresh, it is may also be using location services "while using the app" because it is being used in the background. I'm hoping disabling location services helps.

That's one thing I never tried. Let us know if it changes anything.

I noticed the same problems with FB and deleted it. I will use safari to access FB.

I just left a one star review on the App Store but I'm not sure that'll change anything since they already have a total of 2 stars. I would delete the app but my 6s plus lasts more than a day anyway lol.

Interesting thanks

Not sure, but another thing that bugs me to s**t about the FB app updates is it's often always boilerplate "we've optimized your fb experience blah blah blah" and it never specifically mentions what, exactly, the update "fixes." It's bad form.

You wouldn't be any happier if they told you they updated the ads and tracking functions. Just turn it on, shut up and let us track you using your battery power and consuming the data you pay for.

Hah! Yup, that's pretty much what was updated, I imagine.

You have a crystal ball imagination. Companies like Facebook and Google make their money off you using your battery power and data. Follow the money my friend. Their revenue stream comes primarily from selling info about YOU, and YOU, and YOU too.

I'm sick of it and won't use em any more. What I do use and love are ad and tracking blockers in Safari. Wish there was something for apps as well.

How does friendly compare to the mobile site?

Friendly is more similar to the Facebook app. It's not perfect but I like it better than the mobile site. Give the free version a try. It supports Instagram as well so if you have both you can kill two birds with one app.

Facebook updates their app every 2 weeks I believe. I always delete then download the app every time there's an update. Frees up tons of storage. Same with Twitter & Instagram. Everything is stored in their servers anyways so it doesn't matter. Except for your "Posts You've Liked" on Instagram. For some reason, those are stored on your phone.

I've only been experiencing this battery drain with FB recently, so either something changed in iOS 9 or a recent FB update caused this. Happening both on my 6S and my wife's 6. Hopefully an update will fix this. It's really gotten bad recently.

I suspect ios9 as feedly, another of my fav apps now also has background activity despite it not even having an option for BAR. feedly support has also said its a known big with their app on iOS 9 and the next release will fix it. So hopefully Facebook is the same and they will actually fix it.
