i tried to go all in on the mobile website instead esp. since it also lets me stick to "most recent". honestly who even uses "top news"? but i noticed that my data usage has been going through the roof. i suppose thats due to the fact that it reloads everything every time i check fb cuz it doesnt cache it like the app?

Well crap. My battery drains on FB and I suppose I could use the web option but if it's still using that much data the web is going to work like crap for me. That's why I went to the app in the first place.

FB just plain sucks. Half the time it's just this nonstop offensive political and religious meme bombardment that reminds me of all those stupid email forwards the more idle friends and relatives used to send nonstop fifteen times a day.

I stay on only because I'd otherwise miss important announcements and news that people used to pick up the phone and tell you about. I don't know what it is about my friends and family but if you're not on FB it's like you don't exist.

I remember when I finally cracked and gave in to my friend's nonstop begging and joined. It was like being welcomed into a cult. I swear I could hear "Hotel California" start to play in my head.

And then I found out how bad all the hot looking guys from school ended up looking and I wanted to weep. Of course I look like crap, too, but I was hot-looking for only five days in 1988 anyway. Die FB, die!

I use Friendly. It's a good replacement for the standard Facebook app, but has some navigational shortcomings, especially if you want to view albums or a bunch of pictures posted by someone. I also feel that the graphics look much better in the Facebook app, but with the battery drain it causes, I am much happier with the Friendly app that I purchased it. The purchased Friendly app blocks ads too, which is a bonus!

That's one thing I never tried. Let us know if it changes anything.

Setting location services to Never seemed to fix the battery drain issue for me with version 40 on my iphone/ipad. Just updated to version 41 and switched back to While using the app for location services. So far I have not noticed the battery draining like it previously did with location services enabled.

Where do I find the location settings for FB? Thanks.

I do not really think that facebook app has a direct relationship in battery draining. Poor battery life can be due to many factors on the phone.

What's the new FB update like?

I use Paper instead of the official Facebook app and often charge my phone every other day with no problem at all. I am really loving the battery life on this puppy!

No, it's definitely the FB app. When I'm on it I can practically watch my battery drain away. I have location services always off, background app refresh and all notifications turned off unless I'm running the app, if I remember my settings correctly. FB Messenger is a drain, too. If I close them both down in the task switcher I get great battery life. I can easily go almost two full days on a charge if I don't turn FB on, even if I'm using everything else to the max. Back when it was on my iPad it drained my iPad dry, too.

Background refresh doesn't matter. Facebook app uses a loophole with VoIP to run in the background. It uses your battery and data when you don't want it to do so. The only way it will change is if enough people delete the app AND leave one star reviews for the app at the iTunes Store. And better yet get your family and friends to do the same.
I don't think Facebook will care about the 1-star reviews.

is anyone else getting heat problems along with the battery drain?

I've had the phone since launch 9/25, and just yesterday I picked it up and it was very warm and I had lost 20% battery in like 1 hour sitting idle. I turned it off and it cooled down. I then checked , and FB had consumed a ton of battery usage. Hasn't happened since then, and only that one time so far.

Sometimes. There doesn't seem to be anything I can correlate it to. There are times I'm on for only about fifteen minutes and it gets warm. Other times I'm on for about forty five minutes and it's running cool.
