If Facebook is going to remain free to use, and the users are the product for sale, how can they truly make it totally private and secure?

The broad outline of this definitely sounds better than the current Facebook, but I'm skeptical this will ever exist. Also, you're right with that concern, how would they make money? I sure as hell would not pay Facebook money.

If it’s a subscription model with true privacy sign me up, the days of “something for free” are over as it’s becoming increasing clear it was never “free”, I hope this is a move by fb to implement a private and paid model before the completion does but I’m not very hopeful. The cynic in me thinks it will give the appearance of privacy, cost money and still be stealing data, zucker will apologise and the cycle will continue...

One would think that would have been the first objective: PRIVACY.
Too little , very late.

LOL. Love reading this kind of stuff. So glad my New Years resolution was to quit Facebook. Disabled my account, and haven't looked back yet. Set to delete for Lent. :D

Seriously though - for all the reasons everyone mentions, and the fact that I'm actually in a better mood since ceasing using it, I am so glad I don't bother with any type of social media anymore.

Apple tried and failed miserably with Ping. Then tried again with Connect and failed miserably again.

I love it when these side projects for Apple crash and burn because it should serve as a reminder to focus their computers. Too bad they don't.

Here's the one reasonably good thing I have to say about Apple (because laptops keyboards suck) is that the try different things. They are not afraid of trying and failing. Sometimes it just takes a while for them to see the failure ;) such as the keyboard! okay sorry, pet peeve of mine.

Facebook quietly admitted this week that it was not 5% but rather it was 18% of its human “test” subjects (who were involved in its evil program to track all activity) that were CHILDREN. They were under 18 years of age anyways!

I mean, yes they did pay $20 per month or something but how come I do not see people concerned about child abuse here. Where are the child advocacy groups on this? I would like to see the signed parental consent forms. I doubt they exist. It was probably a checkbox.

As a society we have to protect our children - I thought there was government agencies that did such things?

Zuckerberg is dirty. Don’t forget that.

This coming from the guy who had this famous interaction:

Zuck: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS
[Redacted Friend's Name]: What? How'd you manage that one?
Zuck: People just submitted it.
Zuck: I don't know why.
Zuck: They "trust me"
Zuck: Dumb ****s

I wouldn't trust this Company anymore than I would buy another subscription to MoviePass!

It's fundamental to their surveillance advertiser based business model (which makes more money the more they betray their user's trust and information) to exploit their users (whether they give you a "private" channel to talk to your friends is irrelevant).

Since I doubt Zuck and company would consider changing their business model - I'd like them to be forced to spin off all their non Facebook businesses (WhatsApp, Instagram etc.) then they can go all privacy all they want.

Zuckerberg has repeatedly demonstrated that Facebook is not interested in user privacy and cannot be trusted. This move is clearly aimed at deflecting mounting calls for government regulation of Facebook and other tech giants around the world. Its well past time for the some serious regulatory oversight given the persistent tracking and Cambridge Analytica messes. Zuckerberg needs to be severely reined in and shown his business practices are not acceptable.

Don't forget to give it a new name and here are just a few to start off: Fakebook, Farcebook, Fartbook, Heistbook, Filthbook, Pillagebook...

"understand that many people don't think Facebook can or would even want to build this kind of privacy-focused platform"
