Facebook no longer exists. I have no idea why it matters that Facebook is most hated company, since they don’t exist anymore.

Meta sounds like a great company! I can’t wait to buy their space goggles!

I haven’t used FB for over two years now. However, according to the new App Privacy Report on my iOS 15.2 / iPadOS 15.2, I have several apps installed which continue to feed them data about me. Talk about a good excuse for purging my system of apps….

Yet nearly 3bn people use it every month. Let that sink in for a minute, that is approximately 2,800,000,000 people, 35% of the worlds population - every month.

For all Apple's marketing about privacy, forum frothings about people and their data being the product, even the acceptance that Facebook/Meta really is a cancer on society, it is clear that the majority of internet users do not care. :(
The majority don’t know, don’t have much choice if they want to keep up with many people in their lives... The problem is that these “free” services are insidious and become depended on well before their reputation becomes openly bad.

The thing is, Facebook may die eventually, but another Facebook just pops up, with a different name and fancier PR bs, and people tend to forget. In fact, TikTok is extremely popular, but equally toxic and productize people just as much as Facebook. So yeah. Maybe next year Facebook is no longer the “worst” company, but maybe second worst lol.
True. Without proper guardrails, the tech industry and advertising industry just conducts a perverse secret warfare against end-users for profit. We need to thoroughly end the laissez-faire form of capitalism. It’s destroying everything.

It is not only Facebook and social media dumping fuel on the fire. It is the MSM (Mainstream Media) as well.

The MSM have figured out they can not survive without clickbait articles - so they A/B test the most terrible headlines to get to the "best" clickthrough - leaving us with articles that do not match the headline - and content often fabricated - or dancing on a thin line of "interpreting" the news.

Apart from that many journalists now think they are "Opinion piece writers" where as that used to be reserved for "Opinion articles" - now most articles are VERY coloured with opinion and a lack of real and balanced news analysis. Yes there have always been "slanted media" but it used to be very different. In the "olden days" you had to "earn" your wings before you was even allowed to put opinions in your articles.

In the olden days when I got my writing start - our newsroom rule for new breaking stories was "It has to be INDEPENDENTLY verified by 3 different sources" before we could write about it. Now it is enough if a Twitter/FB account with 3 followers post "a story" for MSM to write the nastiest of stories.

So the end result is now - nobody trust any news - but the same people readily cite and quote from it if it furthers their own opinion.

I wondered if I could stay off of it. Now, a year later, I’m not regretting my decision at all.
I’ve been off it for over two years. No regrets. I feel bad that a few nice strangers and acquaintances will never hear from me again, but it’s a necessary price to pay to get out of active Facebook usage.

Point taken, but I'd imagine some people who smoke worry about cancer. Furthermore, to varying degrees, many people need to use Facebook.
Yes. Actually need. One example, via a close friend: When you’re doing grassroots organizing and non-profit work, and the majority of your potential contacts only use Facebook, you find there’s a requirement to be on that thing.

I hear you and partially agree. “News” for profit is a disaster. However, I don’t know that your characterization of exactly how low their standards are is entirely accurate. Which ones are you specifically calling out?

I closed my FB account permanently this year after about a decade. As my LinkedIn feed started to look more and more like "Facebook for Business," I decided to close that too. I miss neither. I keep tabs on the lives of fewer people now, but if we can't even find one non-FB communication method in common, it probably wasn't that critical of a relationship anyway. I have noticed I have to work much harder to just "kill time" lately. ;)

I have NEVER had a Facebook account and I have actively campaigned among my friends and colleagues against them opening Facebook and Facebook-affiliated accounts. I have been doing this ever since that Zuckerberg-owned threat to democracy was know as “The Facebook”.
It took me a bit longer to dump Instagram once Facebook bought them, but I'm Meta-free as of this date (I never used WhatsApp). You were wise to have never been sucked into the black hole...

Users should have near absolute free speech on these platforms. But they should be intelligent enough to evaluate fringe ideas and reject the wacky ones.

I don't think the issue is individuals with divisive ideas. But rather monetary influence behind trying to divide individuals into distinct groups.

I'm all for Grandma posting about misinformation, and then being corrected (That is discussion). I'm not for social media being a population control lab.
It’s not about a lack of intelligence. It’s about the lack of knowledge and power. Individuals cannot be expected to use self-regulation to combat intentionally-disseminated and financially-supported disinformation.

In my country facebook censors even nobel prizes or high level doctors who talk, with papers in their hands, about the lie they are told about medical facts. Where is the freedom of speech? nowadays any placid talk about something "uncomfortable" is labeled with "hate speech" or "misinformation". They found the way to hush anyone with just a stupid formula. Anything that the regime doesn't like is labeled and censored.
Which country? Which Nobel prizes? What lies? Your vague complaint is vague.

Meta was just created, you have to give them some time to suck.
You’re really that easy? That’s why corporations rebrand. They know a simple name change is all it takes to win some of the populous back into a “benefit of the doubt” stage of PR.

You can’t stop the hookers or the dealers until you stop Johns and the users.

Facebook will be enriched and powerful so long as the majority of the population “can’t live without it”.

We need to outlaw social media for minors. If kids learn to live without it then they may continue to live without it as adults. A side benefit is that our children will grow up free of the online bullying and other detrimental effect of social media on the growing mind.
It’s not just children. Most people using it came to it after they were already adults.
