My wife included. She is on that crap nonstop. She recognizes the creepiness, but thinks the benefits outweigh it. I’m not sure how to convince her otherwise.
Have you watched The Social Dilemma together? If not, I suggest you give that a try. It shows how this platform goes beyond creepiness to manipulation and coercion. Good luck!

And yet, nothing will actually change. I’d love it if everyone who hated Facebook would actually stop using Facebook, but momentum is a very powerful thing.

When FB went offline in early October I didn’t really miss it. When it came back online again the ads, toxic posts, hateful comments, misinformation, etc. overwhelmed the few bits that were good about it. I found it depressing to use again, and within a day deactivated my account. That was nearly three months ago and I haven’t missed it.

They only polled over 1,000 individuals!!!? That represents what..... A neighborhood?
This is actually pretty common number to use, something about that being a decent enough number to be a representative yadedadada.

Never quite agreed with that but whatever.

Haven’t used Facebook. Only had one made because i was interning at a startup and they talked about getting on the feed or some word you’d only know if you had a Facebook and that’s when I realized I couldn’t bluff my way through if I didn’t know the actual mechanics but, human behavior for the most part is easy to manipulate/predict (hello news!).

And that’s a huge reason I won’t use Facebook. It is a waste of time and an energy suck. I think the larger issue is that the depths of data it collects, privacy etc, that imho preys on those who like I said, for the most part, easy to manipulate and this refines the prediction of how they’d react and then bet good $ further circle back so now you can adjust slightly to make them react the way you want them to because you understand what I previously allude to.

watch the movie Ron on Disney+. Facebook/Meta is that company. I guarantee you the author/writer was inspired by the social media giants’ invasion of privacy.

1,000 responses are enough to generalize to the entire United States with a pretty high level of accuracy if the sampling is done correctly.

However, it looks like this was just an online survey using a convenience sample, so it would not fall into this category. As it was an online survey, this likely recruited respondents who were much more likely to have stronger opinions towards technology-related companies.

Clearly this survey was done before Better.com worked their ass off to try and very publicly take the crown as biggest dung heap of all.

I am no stat expert, but I am pretty sure the 1541 people they surveyed are more than 4 times the size necessary to make a confident statement about opinions. Without a calculator, I think it is a confidence interval of +-2.5%. But someone double-checked my math because I am half guessing.

What’s that people find so fascinating about facebook? I had no trouble whatsoever giving up that ****** place for good years ago.

Yeah, once you’re out of the matrix it’s hard to see why people would remain inside, but many do. It was a little like weening off of a bad habit for me. I kept re-creating the account after I’d delete it until I devised a strategy to just summon up the recollection of how irritated I’d feel hovering over every Like and questioning my personality and worth every time someone would miss a joke or not give me “right” attention. It was a herd mentality that I didn’t want to be in. I don’t change my opinions just because the Internet censors and popularity-trolls deem it worthy or not. Facebook, much like other woke and semi-woke forums (ahem) that censor based on ninny trolls, inherently stifle freedom of expression for political conformity. I don’t want a proper world that conforms to the least common denominator. I care far more about a free world.

I haven’t read all of the comments over the pages of this thread so forgive me if anyone has written something similar to what I’m writing but I really get the impression that it‘s simply ”trendy” to bash Facebook and that most people who comment on these threads have little to no understanding of the company in any way.

I quite like Facebook, I use it daily, I love seeing my family and friends update and I have no issues whatsoever with Facebook holding the data it holds on me, targeted ads etc don’t bother me. I put it into perspective and don’t jump on the “you’re the product” bandwagon.

1/3 of the planet use Facebook for a reason, it’s a good product and well executed.

Haters gonna hate and all that :)

I like candy and fried foods too. Most people do. Lots of people have a habit of not doing what is in their best interest.

I would say that the oil, drug, coal, sugar companies do far more damage and they must love Facebook for being so high profile.

based on facebooks “1 second play of an ad is a view” I bet they are adding in people who accidentally click The app for a split second once a month.
Yet nearly 3bn people use it every month. Let that sink in for a minute, that is approximately 2,800,000,000 people, 35% of the worlds population - every month.

For all Apple's marketing about privacy, forum frothings about people and their data being the product, even the acceptance that Facebook/Meta really is a cancer on society, it is clear that the majority of internet users do not care. :(

That's karma. When you give tools to dictators to destroy democracy, that's the least you can expect.

You do not know what is and what isn’t in my best interest with respect. I’m an adult, fully aware of what Facebook is and see it as just one more tool that I choose with eyes wide open to use.

FB has been going overboard suspending accounts with undo censorship. I got a warning when I posted a funny meme about buying the moon. It was just for fun. That's all I use FB for. Fun. I love watching funny cat videos. They make my day. If Mark-y Malarky gets a rise out of selling my "personal" info, it's just sad for him. I believe in karma.
Now I kinda want to see what this meme is.
