To be honest I'd love to know why they haven't gone about at least replacing their messaging system with WhatsApp the integrate WhatsApp into FaceBook who want the messaging and social networking linked up to each other. Funny enough, once I showed a friend about WhatsApp Web his reaction was, "so, why do we still have messenger?" - why do we have it indeed.

Nowadays instead of sending a text or an email, people tend to insist on using Facebook. However, I hate going on Facebook just for the messages - there's a bunch of other stuff there that I don't want to see. Having a dock icon just like Messages is useful because you can see if you have messages at a glance, and you can talk to people without having to go through the browser and the entire Facebook site. If you hate going on Facebook every 30 seconds just to see if someone sent you a message, a Messenger-like app is perfect.

I just use Goofy, it's exactly that.

"What are you saying that you want to hide so badly? I usually don't say anything on FB Messenger that I wouldn't mind people hearing."'

So you are OK with installed key loggers on your computer and cameras in your bedroom, monitoring every move you make and have it reported to the government?

I mean, there are rapists, and camera access to all bedrooms would help fighting crimes…

Are you OK with getting rid of search warrants, so the police can go into any house whenever they like, without suspicion or OK from a district attorney? Why complicate the police work, let them catch the bad guys…You have nothing to hide…

If not, why should we allow the same, just because it happens in cyberspace?

(Of course, Facebook is a private company, and Zuckerberg may decide to run it like Erich Honecker ran DDR, but I will never buy products from such a company, which includes Oculus Rift CV1 they just released)

It'd be a good app for me. Facebook Messenger has all but replaced email for me. Everyone is on Facebook, and I find it plenty good enough for my needs (I love social media so it works out well).

Right now I'm using Goofy.

What are you saying that you want to hide so badly? I usually don't say anything on FB Messenger that I wouldn't mind people hearing. At the very worst, a friend will ask about how my relationship is going or whatever, and some random person will see what I say; big deal. If anyone is reading all those mundane messages from me and all the other Facebook users, I feel bad for that person.

Wow, just wow. Your vision on privacy is so misguided, I just don't know how to respond to that.

A lot of bickering for a program you do not even need to use. I use Facebook Messenger and I like the idea of a native Mac app a lot. Jabber was never a really good solution, as it forced you into permanent chat mode and was not entirely reliable either. I for one welcome this if true, the Messenger app for iOS is not at all that bad from a UX standpoint.

I avoid the messenger on my phone, so it will be a no brainer not to install it on my computer.

The dumbing down continues. Too lazy to even do emails now? Try Facebook Messenger. Meantime we are trying to find a method to find even more ways to reduce the tedium and stress of having to actually do stuff that involves the hassle of thinking. Cheers!

Yeah, seriously can't wait to see chat heads appearing all over my screen while I try to work.

Like it wasn't annoying enough on mobile.

And that's just the government... imagine the private sector... I tell a friend on Facebook that my grandparents died of X illness and suddenly my health insurance premiums go up.

Ah, Facebook. So they'll finally release a app for it on Mac. Which could be useful if it's an All-in-one App. But it's Facebook, so will get this app. Then one for their Messages. Then one for their Pages. Then one just for "Liking" posts. Then one for searching for friends.

Jeezus ...don't employees lock their machines when their not there ? While they think of the act of privacy for Facebook website, they be applying same their own company.

"oh ya sure no problem.. lets just take a photo of this employee's laptop who does not even care"

Hopefully they are smart enough to release it through the MAS like Twitter.

don't you mean get round it so they'll keep the 70% ? This doesn't deserve a presence on the Mac app store.

I hope this turns out to be the case. Most of the people I want to talk to are in my Facebook network. Their Messenger app on mobile is awesome. Love their GIF and sticker implementation (which I prefer over Slack). I like that they have an API to extend the capabilities. I'd love if they made Messenger for business to really take on Skype, HipChat and Slack.

god why??

Capitalism, earning money, unlike those liberal leeches sucking welfare from government? Oh, wait, Facebook are known for taking gobs of that too... it's all good.

Facebook allows animated GIFs again? Who knew...

My computer is one of the last few places that have SOME level of sane coding still, so... please for the love of God no and reactivate third-party messaging.
I despise having to run multiple messengers and I despise having my chat logs spread around 100 places.

The screen shots seem different.
Note that there is no settings cog in the top left in the screen shot posted in the article.

i dont see the appeal of this. Given their recent record of native apps I would probably even prefer to use the website.

Ugh, it stinks that they started disallowing Jabber clients to connect. Last year, I used to be able to contact all my Facebook friends (aka most people I know) just through Messages, plus people on iMessage, SMS, and AIM. It was perfect! I wish Apple would update Messages to support whatever proprietary protocol Facebook uses because I really don't want to have to run multiple messaging apps.

EddiOS42 has the right idea. They probably did it so they can get people to use their own stuff. Unfortunate.
They probably did it so that you could use all the stuff unique to Facebook. Without their own dedicated app, there'd be limited uptake of sticks and Facebook Cash and everything else.

(I love Facebook Cash. More people need to use it. So many times people owe me money and I send them requests via Cash. Too few people respond by actually using the feature. Most people pay me back in US currency. I feel like they've basically given me a cow, for all my ability to use it in other transactions.)
