Facebook will launch a new desktop app for Messenger on both macOS and Windows later this year, according to a since-deleted blog post spotted by French blog iGeneration ahead of Facebook's annual F8 developer conference.

A screenshot of the Windows version of the app reveals that it will look rather similar to both Skype and Apple's own Messages app on Mac. Facebook said Messenger Desktop will have many of the same features as the mobile version of the app, including support for group video calls and collaboration.

Facebook is expected to unveil the desktop app alongside several other new Messenger features at its F8 keynote today at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time.

Update: Facebook's blog post has been republished after Messenger Desktop was unveiled at F8 as expected.

CNET has a video of the announcement:

This is one app I'll be avoiding on the Mac like the plague. Oh wait, this is the plague itself just disguised.

Apple should reject spyware if they really care about privacy.

No just no. Goes to show why the world is in its current shape; people don't learn. Just look back at Odysseus and the Trojan horse...

Looks like a clone of the Messages for Mac that Apple made. But regardless, stay away from anything Facebook puts out if you value your privacy.

I've never installed this on my iPhone because of the "we will be listening to you through your microphone, please sign here to agree" insanity. At least on my iMac I can keep my mic turned off. What privacy concerns would you all have beyond what FB can already do with their main app?

this apple contradicting themselves, why apple is adding FB to mac os after removing FB from the share option feature, well i hope i get the option to remove it, because this is one app that i don’t like running in the background, even if i don’t have any FB account or don’t even run the app, but you don’t know what the app might be doing, spying or collection in the back ground, sorry FB but you builded this bad reputation and i personally don’t lime you or trust you, i’ll be blocking this app with little snitch or similar, tim talked about security and privacy but now they doing this, i wonder what has changed in the last few months, absolutely nothing, things didn’t got any better, things got worse but tim wants to includes this. useless app on mac os, this is proof that tim has lost it,he don’t even know what he wants or where he is going

it astounds me that people still use facebook in any capacity. Admittedly, I did use it at one point because I thought it was "cool" to hear from people I hadn't heard from in a while but then was quickly reminded why I stopped talking to them in the first place...I haven't used it in years.

Apple is not doing anything. Facebook is releasing an application for macOS.

You have to install this, so you certainly can remove it. It will not run in the background unless you launch it.

If you do not trust them, do not download their app and install it. Totally your choice.

This is a third party app, that you would have to go and download. What does this have to do with Tim Cook?

Where did you get the idea that Apple is doing this? This app has nothing to do with Apple, Facebook is the developer. There's no need to block it with little snitch because you would have to install it for it to be on your computer.

Heaven knows what this app does behind the scenes to unsuspecting users.
