Facebook Wants to Open 'Welcoming' Retail Stores Where People Can Experience the 'Metaverse'

Welcome ... To the machine... The Metaverse Machine a.k.a The Borg incorporating 'Hotel California'.

There is absolutely nothing that would make me want to even go within 10miles of a Facebook store. With this, I guess that distance has just doubled.

I would never buy a physical product from Facebook, even if it was the coolest thing I ever saw.

They have proven time and again that they cannot be trusted with personal data, either due to lax security, poor judgment, or outright sleazy data-sharing with sketchy third parties.

As long as Zuckerberg and the current management team are in place they have nothing for sale I’d ever buy.

This dude just gets creepier every second.

Maybe he will use it for his exploratory research into a potential Zuck '24 campaign.
I’m pretty sure there’s something in the Constitution that makes it illegal for vaguely humanoid mannequins to be President.

He reminds me of one of those aliens from Men In Black who wear human suits and don’t get the mannerisms and expressions quite right.

I've been sitting here, trying to come up with something clever. Something about people selling themselves (there's laws, aren't there?) or something about buying expensive devices that will just make you miserable.

But I can't. I'm done. Facebook isn't funny anymore.

Can SOMEONE. ANYONE. PLEASE just kill Facebook already???

PLEASE!

The idea sounds interesting but I feel it's too late to introduce because the company has allowed the world to percieve the word 'Facebook' to be synomonous with the same name of it's social media company Facebook, it never seemed to distance itself from Facebook Inc (main company name) to Facebook (social media company name) and because of this, the bad name and reputation of the social media company has aligned itself with that of the trading company Facebook Inc. The fact is they are both totally different entities but Facebook Inc. never made that clear when ever Facebook (social media company) was being mentioned or discussed.

Meta (previously Facebook Inc) own a huge diverse amount of companies and it could have been possible to have a store that shows of the services and products of the all these different companies BUT it's too late because the brand name has been damaged due to it's past same name association with the social media company.

oh and macrumours editors, please note that it is proper etiquette when now refereing to Facebook Inc to be written as 'Meta (formally Facebook Inc.)'. You should not be titling threads or articles with 'Facebook (now Meta)', it's bad form

Zuckerberg is the worst spokesperson for a company trying to promote human interaction. They ought to hire a woman that can present these ideas with a more human touch and Zuckerberg should only appear before congress but never in ads or announcements.

Zuckerberg totally sucks.
Tried out Facebook loooong time ago.
Sure, there was some old friends that was nice to reconnect with.
But after that, I left, will never ever return.

Social media sucks the most when it comes to Facebook.
It’s like stalking media. I wish there was a function where you could hide everything Facebook EVERYWHERE.

He must be on drugs or something. 'Open a store to experience 'Facebook''?

Why, sure...

Opening stores has only killed thousands of businesses. Gateway Country Stores? But reality just doesn't seem to be an encumbrance to The Great Zuck...

SkyNet is live. Now with free coffee near you.
Yeah, Facebook being what it is makes the store idea creepy enough, but all that vague, feel-good New Age hooey they use to describe the “experience” of visiting their store takes it up to next level woo-woo weirdness and unintentional self parody.

Is anyone actually interested in a metaverse? Wtf is the point of recreating the real world into a fake world? Seems so depressing and dystopian.
Augmented reality is the future. It will present such a competitive advantage in many situations that most people will use it. It’s going to be huge. But probably not for 20 years when a few technological pieces come together.

Or is he aiming to create the Oasis from Ready Player One?

I've wondered if there would be a time when that book concept could be so predominant in our society. The problem with the Oasis analogy is that in the book, the populous are packed like sardines into overcrowded residential areas, and yet extremely disconnected from each other. It's similar, but not the same as Facebook.

And Facebook is definitely NO Oasis.

They'll probably have the devil, I mean Mark at the door with a contract for you to sign, to give him your soul to sell in exchange for video chat or something...

I think AR needs to evolve a bit more before it becomes ubiquitous.

To be honest I thought VR was pointless until I played Half Life Alyx.

Now I'm all in... if I could justify the money for a better PC rig and $1000 headset and a dedicated play space, all so I can avoid the real world.

But never with Facebook. Never.

I'm honestly waiting on the new headset for the PS5 or to see if Apple can attract devs to actually make worthwhile experiences.

There's way too much fragmentation already for such a nascent market.

Mind you at least Zuckerberg isn't trying to stick micro chips into our brains.. yet... he's probably waiting to see how successful Elon is with that first.

They are becoming more of a joke and making it worse with every follow-up announcement. Seriously, they‘re done.
I would not wish to be an employee of theirs right now. But also not at any time lol
