Social media needs to burn down. I hope after the pandemic humanity has another awakening and genuine human contact becomes more relevant as we put down our mobiles and actually reconnect.
I actually don’t use any social media. I also prefer to be alone. Definitely not a social person.

that’s what’s great about a forum. I can just disappear when I want.

Not enough. You need to wipe all references/pictures/links that your family and friends have made with or about you as well. Then you need to not click on FB like or dislike buttons in websites or reply to a companies Facebook account. This article is from a similar timeframe as an article I linked some comments earlier, but it specifically talks about non users and their complete lack of control over whatever Facebook has collected.

Well, I thought Google was worse in that, but apparently Facebook is the same.

Sadly, no. The only way to be sure Facebook is not tracking you is to live in a cave in the mountains, having no social contacts whatsoever and - this ist crucial - not use the internet at all.
At some point in future, humans will realize that they needed to go thru all this technological and virtual kind of living as substitute to real life, back on Earth, back to Nature and to ourselves. We're just not there yet, a bit immature, like kids playing with shiny toys..

That’s fair enough in my eyes, as long as Apple can cut off tracking and they put up the do not track prompt they can encourage all they want and leave it to the user’s prudence

The problem is that we are all too used to getting apps like this for free. A social networking backbone as big as Facebook's costs a lot of money to run. A company isn't going to build all that out of the goodness of their hearts and lose millions of dollars daily running it so that people can share selfies online. Thus, the premise of advertising and specifically, targeted advertising comes into play. You get something for free, and facebook does a lot of "magic" in the background to generate money off people using their service.

For people to all cry fowl now that "I don't want to be tracked but I still want my free service" makes no sense. They would never have existed in the first place without it. Their license agreement clearly states that they perform this tracking which everyone agrees to when making a facebook account. Facebooks biggest mistake was only giving users the option for tracking with free usage, and never allowing for a paid option to use their services.

Privacy is great. But when you get something for "free", you always need to understand what you are giving up in return. I imagine for most people, they would prefer to keep using facebook for free rather than pay for it.

I heard Facebook even tracks the web sites you visit well after leaving Facebook.
Downright EVIL.
In order to avoid this, and to delete/destroy my old FaceBook account (I hadn’t logged in, in many years) I took a clean, recently installed mac, I switched off my router, I switched it on to get a new IP (and of course I disconnected all my devices), I logged into FaceBook, asked to close/delete/destroy my account, and then I unplugged the Ethernet cable and changed again my router IP. Obviously that device was set fire formatted again afterwards to leave no trace.

Now I’m happy knowing that my profile is no longer there, even tho I haven’t used FB in many years.

1 month later- "Facebook found to be abusing user data even after users choose not to allow facebook to track."

lol people know apple have their own "dedicated section" at the very bottom of the privacy settings that lets them use YOUR DATA for.... wait for it... ads! too right?

oh and in case you are wondering, unlike every other app maker, this is defaulted on, I turned it off myself.

So glad that someone pointed this out. Apple is not immune to this. Anytime you get something for free, you need to give up a little for ads. Otherwise, it probably wouldn't exist.

First, what Facebooks apps? 😀

Also, I never wanted personalized ads. I never wanted any Facebook ads. I already make a point of supporting local small business to the full extent. I don’t need Facebook for that.

I could see them crippling the app if you don’t allow tracking. That’s in line with their style of operation.

They presumably won’t be allowed to do so, but we will have to see how well Apple enforces this.

You really don’t need a “Facebook app” on your phone.
I’m nearly a year clean from Facebook but I don’t wanna drop Insta :/ I’m sure they use data in the exact same way. I like being Facebook free but I don’t want to be THAT disconnected. Decisions, decisions...

I swear this move alone will keep me an Apple customer for at least another 5 years. And the fact that Facebook is so dishonest about their business model and total lack of respect for customers—and that they are self-righteously entitled to everyone’s data—ensures I will never, ever use any of their products ever again.

Facebook. So gross.

Really this should be changed. If you opt out and a company's services solely exists based on ad revenue, why allow these users to use your service?

Sure FB or whatever company can display ads at random, but ad space buyers absolutely are paying more for targeted ad placement.

It just means that Facebook will have to charge less for their ads, since they will now presumably be less effective.

Their profits grew by over 50% in 2020 and there are billions of people using their services globally. This isn't going to kill their company fgs 🤦‍♂️
It’s obviously putting a significant dent in their business model.
