Instagram is pure evil as well, the other day I found out any searches you do, if you delete your history, it says history isn't deleted on their servers, only "hidden" from your view.

Looking at all the privacy disclaimers all around Instagram and Facebook, I have never seen such an invasive, obsessive data-mining where they track and record permanently every single thing, regardless of how mundane or insignificant it might be.

The irony is that this is exactly what Apple wants. They want full disclosure. Even funnier is that Zuck thinks people not only want ads, but they want "better ads." Woz was right years ago in calling for a paid Facebook that tracked nothing, curated nothing, advertised nothing, but allowed people to virtually interact.

Do they still collect your phone number when a friend of yours uploads their contacts? I deleted my account over a year ago now and I know about the shadow profiles and collecting data from others who include you in their posts/photos, but not this part.
If someone else uploads "their copy" of your information, then FB gets your information. No way around that.

The only way to be sure Facebook is not tracking is to completely wipe out its services on your iPhone. I don't trust this MF.

Please. Oh, pretty please. Go on, pwease, pwease, pwease. I’ll make you dinner, do your laundry, scrub your gussets!

So I'm wondering if Facebook tracking would still apply if you use a privacy browser -- in particular Duck Duck Go and burn after each session before going to any other app or website. Anyone know?

What's the benefit of personalised ads? The best ad is the non-existent ad. There are no benefits to me in having any advertising, certainly not advertising that necessitates invasion of privacy.
Wow.

So, let's just say that I shop a lot in Walmart, (I don't but you can use any shop/organisation that applies to you). They want to advertise a 50% off sale and it pops up in a Google search that you/I/A. N. Other is doing.
Would you call that a benefit?

That still leaks way too much unique information to not be trackable, so, yes, you're still being tracked.

There's no way for me to quickly give like a beginner's guide to how to fingerprint users/devices like that, so sadly I have to just recommend doing a web search (using https://duckduckgo.com, of course).

People should bite the bullet and delete facebook. There are other ways to communicate with friends and family (dare I say using the phone feature, on our iphones). I got rid of all social media last May. Missed out on nothing, and still in contact with the friends that actually care.
Friends that VERY LIKELY have garnered some of the info they gave you/stories they heard/jokes they told you on Facebook - even if indirectly.
I'll wager that is one of the reasons you feel you missed out on nothing.
No man is an island.

Unfortunately, it’s not just that one article as macrumors had to turn off comments for a number of posts that relate to equal rights and progress. I can comment in political posts but it seems even those who can have gone off the rails with their comments. I truly hope they’re sock puppets cause if this is how bad we’ve fallen as a society I don’t see much hope for humanity.
I agree that there are complete lunatics that have hijacked what could be real discourse. It is unfortunate because we are left with a post that is effectively a statement of fact that this country is systemically racist - no debate. And, that the only way to combat it is to systemically group people into categories of immutable traits and differentiate our treatment of them accordingly. Sure, that make sense.

Anyway, on topic... does anyone know how to pry a spouse away from using every free moment to check FB? Asking for a friend ;)

You don’t have to wait. Just turn off ‘Allow Apps to Request to Track’ in Privacy settings.

There are other methods though, like loading a remote ‘image’ in an email or web page, so if the image server is allowed to load the image, it ‘knows’ that your browser (if it can identify it/you) has been on the page.

I heard Facebook even tracks the web sites you visit well after leaving Facebook.
Downright EVIL.

Facebook at least until fairly recently could track you even if you didn’t have an open account with them.

Not enough. You need to wipe all references/pictures/links that your family and friends have made with or about you as well. Then you need to not click on FB like or dislike buttons in websites or reply to a companies Facebook account. This article is from a similar timeframe as an article I linked some comments earlier, but it specifically talks about non users and their complete lack of control over whatever Facebook has collected.

Sadly, no. The only way to be sure Facebook is not tracking you is to live in a cave in the mountains, having no social contacts whatsoever and - this ist crucial - not use the internet at all.

I got rid of it last year. I don’t like gigs rich oligarch run corporations controlling what people can think by censoring what others can say. It turns out that there aren’t really any withdrawals getting off FB crack.

That's wrong think citizen. Please report to the nearest re-education center immediately.

The only way we're going to put an end to this is to publicly shun and shame companies that do this form of data collection. These corporations only respond to their bottom line, if you take that away from them, then they either have to change their business practices, or go out of business.

Unfortunately most people are too dumb, or don't care about their data being used against them as long as they can watch more funny cat videos.

If you have Facebook, cancel your account. If your friends have Facebook, tell them to do the same. Gotta spread the word so we can slay the beast!

lol people know apple have their own "dedicated section" at the very bottom of the privacy settings that lets them use YOUR DATA for.... wait for it... ads! too right?

oh and in case you are wondering, unlike every other app maker, this is defaulted on, I turned it off myself.
