but question is why would you not pick up your phone if you are using it on the desk?

not all of us like to have siri accessible while phone is locked. Being able to reach over and unlock device while it sits on my nightstand or a desk and then have SIRI dictate a message is a nice feature.

I agree that it can be pretty inconvenient.

The hidden previews (I've since turned it off) make it inconvenient when the phone is in a car dock.

Wearing a surgical mask as work is hugely inconvenient. I've never had to enter my password more.
Ever try leaving it unlocked? If it’s with you and being used often why not. I did this with my 7Plus while driving with phone in dock.

and then you forget to relock it and that will be the time it gets lost or stolen and I'd be certain that many if not most company supplied iPhones would have requirements to maintain a passcode or lock enabled

Walked home from work with touch screen friendly gloves on. Unlocked phone with Face ID and swiped up no problem. Made a call just by looking at my phone and telling Siri to call the person. Priceless in the cold when I don’t want to take my gloves off. Seriously, it is a game changing feature for those of use who live in cold climates. That said, I wish Apple had given us a choice / implemented both Touch and Face ID.

I agree it is great for us in cold climates. Touch ID did not work with touch screen friendly gloves (obviously, since touch screen friendly != fingerprint friendly), but Face ID DOES work for me with a toque, sunglasses, and even part of my chin covered (with coat/scarf) and touch screen friendly gloves do allow me to do the gestures.

In a emergency situation touch ID is quicker than Face ID to open phone.

Have you actually tested this out, though? Why do you say this? Face ID is fast for me, I don't even need to think about it. I can see Touch ID being quicker if you...uh, burned your face off, but Face ID being quicker if you uh, amputated your hands. In either case, you can still use your toe to enter in your passcode.

Touch ID never worked for me in the rain or when my fingers or phone was wet. Face ID seemed to work just fine while standing in the rain with a hat and hood on.

How do you leave it unlocked?
Settings > Display > auto lock > never

It will lock if you close it it with power button but not on its own. I use my phone a lot this way. Screen stays up to what I am using. But if I put away I close it and unlock when bringing back out.

Now i'm sure it's much more secure then touch id but for me, I see it as pretty inconvenient. How is angling your phone towards your face to unlock your phone easier to use?
I always have my phone laying on my desk next to my laptop when working. And without moving and without moving the phone i'd just reach and unlock with my finger and can check something. Now I have to lift it towards my face and swipe up or tap it to wake, swipe up, wait till "Face ID" disappears then enter my passcode.
Or like last night I was just hanging out, happen to be leaning my head on my hand(in front of my face) guess what! Have to adjust my position to unlock my phone.
I just don't see how they could keep this and not somehow add back touch ID later down the road. Not every situation we have with our phone is directly in front of our faces.

I love the phone overall but little inconveniences like these just make me really miss touch ID. Also is there any way to make entering your passcode quicker, i don't know why they need to show me "face id" first then let me enter it.
Pretty simple solution. Get a wireless charging dock. I’m using the TYLT VU. It’s excellent.

In emergency nothing quicker than holding power and volume button for couple seconds auto dials 911. Does not need any unlock, can do it in pocket by feel.

is that really how you do it? I think it is 5 rapid clicks of the power button, a new SOS feature of iOS 11

another apple mystery, why is it different how it is actuated amongst the devices?

Here's how to make the call on iPhone X, iPhone 8, or iPhone 8 Plus:

  1. Press and hold the side button and one of the Volume buttons until the Emergency SOS slider appears.
  2. Drag the Emergency SOS slider to call emergency services. If you continue to hold down the side button and Volume button, instead of dragging the slider, a countdown begins and an alert sounds. If you hold down the buttons until the countdown ends, your iPhone automatically calls emergency services.
Here's how to make the call on iPhone 7 or earlier:

  1. Rapidly press the side button five times. The Emergency SOS slider will appear. (In India, you only need to press the button three times, then your iPhone automatically calls emergency services.)
  2. Drag the Emergency SOS slider to call emergency services.

The way Apple advertised Face ID, I was impressed with the way the lady in the pool and the guy at the table easily unlocked it while not staring directly from the top and at an angle. When I tried it that way, it wasn't as easy. You have to be very close to it, closer than Apple shown. It seems Apple has exaggerated in that respect.

I'd say it's a bit of a wash between circumstances where faceID is better (using a fingerprint is inconvenient from gloves, wet hands etc) and times when Touch ID is better (using face is inconvenient from scarves, certain sunglasses, phone on desk, in sideways car mount etc). In any of the edge cases there's a passcode fallback.

I remember when second gen Touch ID came out and people swore in here that the previous generation was unusable terrible in comparison. I didn't really notice it when I upgraded.

For me it's simply a matter of Touch ID has never felt cumbersome enough that I feel like it's a problem needing solving. Especially for $1300 Canadian.

I mean, I hear you. I use my phone on my desk at work, and I find myself either picking up the phone or having to lean over my desk so the phone can "see" me. It is a bit annoying, but like anything else, you just adjust and move on. Not a big deal.
I lean the phone on a slight angle upward. A stack of cards or an eraser seems to work fine.

Try emailing Tim, who knows he might answer or have tech people answer. It’s happened before. Unfortunately they didn’t consult me prior to making decisions. And didn’t clue me in on their logic. Sorry

How do you bypass flicking open the phone after facial ID? I would prefer the phone waking up after facial ID, bypassing the stupid thumb flick? Is this possible?

Flick up first then "face ID" will flash and open your phone.

For your use case of unlocking the phone while its on a desk, there are only a few other options that Apple could have taken, both of which are not great solutions.

  1. Have a bezel-less display and put Touch ID on the back of the phone - Even with this option, you'd still have to pick up your phone from the desk to unlock the phone since the Touch ID is on the back.
  2. Have a display with bezels and have Touch ID on the front of the phone - This option would have been pretty inexcusable for Apple to take since people have been clamoring for smaller bezels ... Also other companies have been racing towards the bezel less display.
  3. Have a bezel-less display and have Face ID as the unlocking mechanism - This is what Apple went with and frankly, I think its the best solution with the least amount of compromises. Just put your face over the phone to unlock it ...

I agree. The tech is really good. I actually had minor facial reconstruction surgery today. I have stitches, blood and gauze on my face. Face ID still worked.

The problem is i feel it’s inherently flawed. Even Before the surgery if it was on My desk, if i was in my car and it was low, in bed if the angle wasnt right, it simply failed to work. Im not usually looking at my phone straight on like a woman and her makeup mirror. TouchID was waaay better in everyday practice, at least for me. I really miss it and almost makes me want to return the phone and keep my 7. Still debating, im going to give it the 14 days to see
