Turning off Attention Awareness seems to have no effect for me: I still have to deliberately look at the phone before it will unlock. Maybe I'm not understanding what it's supposed (or not supposed) to do when disabled.

I agree with much you have to say. They sure sold us on Finger ID and then a few years later dump it and push the Face ID. Just returned my X and back to my 8+. The Size of the device and bezels was not worth giving up my 8+.

There is no doubt that Apple has changed but I can not complain too much as almost all of my IRA is in Apple stock and have made me a LOT of money and some even think it will hit $200 per share.

Nice move on both the switching to the 8 Plus and the IRA investment;)

I just don't see how they could keep this and not somehow add back touch ID later down the road. Not every situation we have with our phone is directly in front of our faces.

I love the phone overall but little inconveniences like these just make me really miss touch ID. Also is there any way to make entering your passcode quicker, i don't know why they need to show me "face id" first then let me enter it.

Agree.. Touch ID is way more convenient.

But yet when I said that I prefer the convenience of Touch ID and am not quite sold on Face ID as being one of the reasons I went with the 8 Plus over the X I was blasted with "ZOMG Face ID is here to stay! Touch ID is dead!" by all the Apple diehards.

I guess we'll see... but I know I'll be enjoying the convenience of my Touch ID for at least another year.

:D

I can't wait until future iPhones have "Mind ID," where you just think about opening your phone and it unlocks, and how many complaints that will receive over Face ID.

Some things are better some things are worse. The desk thing is my major annoyance with Face ID.

However i love the fact that the phone unlocks whilst i look at notifications and i can then mark emails as read or delete things without ever going into the app (or having to use touch ID).

NFC also seems much quicker than my 6S - when i use my phone on the tube, the gates open instantly, before there was a sizeable delay.

If FaceID is so much better, why is it slower and clunkier? Pick up/tap, swipe up, wait 1-2 seconds vs placing your thumb on the touchID sensor while lifting it and the phone is already unlocked and at the home screen. It's obvious which is superior.
It takes a little longer to process but it isn’t clunkier to me at all. It’s usually done by the time I’m done swiping.

I'm not quite understanding the issue or inconvenience here. When I am at work, my phone sits on the desk until I get a notification. If I want to interact with that notification, I am going to pick up my phone just like I did with my iPhone 7. Pick it up. Because of raise to wake, as it is being raised it wakes, you preemptively swipe and by the time the phone is brought to your face and your attention, it is unlocked. Or you don't swipe and the phone unlocks and you deal with the notification from the lock screen.

If you disable the feature where the phone blocks notifications until unlocked, you can check the notification by simply tapping phone. Where exactly is the inconvenience here? Are people complaining about 1 second of time difference here? I'll take added security over a 1 second time difference any day of the week.

Picking up your phone makes it obvious you are not working.

You can make yourself think that you are being subtle if you are subtly flicking your phone whilst its on your desk.

You're kidding yourself though because everyone still notices.

It's like people who surf the internet in a small window. Yeah i can still see you surfing macrumors you plonkers

Either you make sure the coast in clear then pick up your phone and quickly type your message or you awkwardly and "inconspicuously" try and reply to whatever you are replying to with one hand while your phone is still resting on the table with your eyes shifting from your computer to your phone.

Pick your poison.

Pretty convenient for me, I had the fastest Apple Pay transaction to date today. I was even shocked at how fast it was. I heard the ding before I was even asked to swipe my card.

I found using Apple Pay/Credit Card to be faster than with Touch ID, but with a caveat. With Touch ID you hold your phone to the receptor with your thumb on it and wait for it to first recognize your thumb then process. With Face ID, I've already unlocked use of my credit card by looking at it, and when I move my phone to the receptor it is almost instantaneously processed.

I was thinking about this as I used ApplePay for the first time with the X today. With my 7, I also ended up holding the phone kind of precariously at the bottom with just a finger or two behind it for support while using the TouchID. Now, I feel like I have a better grip on the phone during a transaction. Great for the drive through at Starbucks.

FaceID is cool and fun, but in day to day usage I don't like it. Unlocking my phone always takes an extra 1-2 seconds compared to touchID, and that will never improve just based on the nature of how you have to execute it. Apple really should have put a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner on this thing as an alternative method of biometric login and security.

It wouldn't be slower if you swiped up before waiting for it to unlock. Just pick up the phone (looking at it as you normally would) and swipe up. I do recommend turning off "Require Attention", which I have. For me, FaceID is faster and more reliable than TouchID:
  • Its WAY faster every time you use an app that uses TouchID/FaceID. There's NOTHING to do. Just tap the app and it opens, no extra step.
  • Same when tapping a notification from the lock screen (no extra step), or
  • When using Siri from a lock screen. (no extra step)
  • I find the swipe up quicker than searching for the home button. You can swipe up from anywhere at the bottom.
For me it really is as easy as having no security at all, yet more secure than anything we've had. John Gruber and several other reviewers make the same point.

Regarding reliability: I give tech support to a lot of friends and for a surprising number of them, touchID NEVER works. (maybe they have sweaty hands or are pressing it to hard or too soft, don't know). FaceID will probably work for them beautifully.

Also much better when using siri on a locked phone when driving (assuming you're using a cradle). No need to touch the phone at all.

Also with TouchID on my iPhone7+, I often had problems inadvertently triggering siri, when holding the home button after the press (just forgetfulness). Those problems are gone of course.

The only time it has ever failed for me was when I was tilting the screen to show FaceID to a friend, so it tried to use my friends face for FaceID. Even then I didn't have to use a passcode. I just hit the power button, tapped the screen and swiped up. Retry was never an option after a TouchID fail.

One other benefit of the new gestures on the iPhoneX. Control panel was almost never reliably accessible from within apps. For me that failed much more than it worked. Now the control panel can be accessed instantly and from anywhere. Big Win.

Me too, broker had me sign paper to grandfather my account because the government doesn't think I should have all my eggs in one basket!

Well I guess I'm a rare one that likes it better than touch....Maybe I just have greasy/sweaty hands. lol but I have not had to enter my passcode once with face id but I would always have to do with with touch id several times a day if there was any type of moisture or anything on my hands. Now I do think the touch is more secure but I think I like the face better. It always unlock for me , sunglasses, in my dark bedroom at night in dark, with my glasses on or off, on my desk, etc mines has always opened so far.

I remember the same arguments when Touch ID came out. Does not matter if you want to get used to Face ID, if Apple decides to go in that direction, you will too.

If not Android is your future.

I never recall arguments about touch ID being inconvenient as compared to the other locking option before it which was passcode only.

I have one of these for my iPhone 7 on my desk. I assume I'll have no problem at all using it with my iPhone X once it's delivered.

But doesn’t that defeat the purpose of wireless charging? I have belkin wireless chargers around the house and it is way better than messing with wires. Why inconvenience yourself over Apples forced beta technology?

Iphone X on my desk and face id not working is the greatest annoyance. So much so that I boxed it up today and plan to return it in a few days. Back to my 8 Plus and wait until they make improvements on face id to work even when the phone is on my desk without me having to hover my face right above the phone.

Just tilt it a little and it works fine. I use an eraser.

What's the difference between docking it and charging it at maximum speed or charging very, very, very, very, very slowly wirelessly?

I've seen many people trying to solve the problem of unlocking when on a desk, the fact is, all of them are compromises, tilting the phone up on an eraser, buying a stand for it etc etc, fine, people may be happy to do that but for me Face ID is a step back in convenience, I don't want to have to use a "hack" to get it working. I don't want to have to pick my phone up when im working and want to check something quickly, nor do I want it right under my face all the time. I love the X in many ways but for my use cases, Face ID doesn't work, doesn't work in the mornings in bed, doesn't work on the desk, and when It does work, I find it slower. This and the small screen are the reason I have arranged a return and will order the 8+.

However if they can improve this like Touch ID was improved after the first year, and if they release a X Plus next year, then it really will be the best phone IMO. If they can find a way to maybe make the camera super wide angle so your face is in view from wider angles, that could solve the issue

I find it perplexing that so many people are willing to make concessions for a $1000+ phone. I know its first gen and will improve, but wow! People take being inconvenienced so well, I don't get it.

New devices should make everything easier and work around you, you shouldn't have to deal with inconvenience and work around it. Unlocking your phone is nothing new and exciting yet I read thread after thread about face ID and everyone is so excited about it. LOL. This is the mentality that allowed Apple to make the same phone for 4 years and everyone just ate it up. Gosh I wish more people were more critical, it would make companies put out better products.
I view face ID as of right now, as lesser alternative to touch ID (unless you hands are wet or are wearing gloves).

I will stick to my earlier arguments in other threads of the iPhone X being a beta product and rushed to market because they sat on their asses a looong time and were falling way behind and had to do something.

This. It's a great phone though, im not bashing it overall, it feels amazing in the hand, but you're right, people need to be more critical and stop justifying their £/$1000 purchase by getting round the inconveniences that weren't there before

You memory is not good. Multiple threads on how badly Touch ID works. I even had trouble at first but with each device, Apple improved it as they will with Face ID.

The only difference is that occasional hiccups with touch ID were still infinitely better than using your passcode to unlock the phone every time back then. Face ID may work ok, but it's not faster than touch ID most of the time and has some situations where its not as convenient to use as touch ID.
