Pretty simple solution. Get a wireless charging dock. I’m using the TYLT VU. It’s excellent.

That's exactly my solution too and it gives you 2 benefits.... No need to pick up your phone for face ID to work and it's always well charged...the best of both worlds!

I agree. The tech is really good. I actually had minor facial reconstruction surgery today. I have stitches, blood and gauze on my face. Face ID still worked.

The problem is i feel it’s inherently flawed. Even Before the surgery if it was on My desk, if i was in my car and it was low, in bed if the angle wasnt right, it simply failed to work. Im not usually looking at my phone straight on like a woman and her makeup mirror. TouchID was waaay better in everyday practice, at least for me. I really miss it and almost makes me want to return the phone and keep my 7. Still debating, im going to give it the 14 days to see

I’m with ya. Just not every single situation has the phone in front of my face or close enough to unlock. Giving it the two weeks though. We’ll see.

For your use case of unlocking the phone while its on a desk, there are only a few other options that Apple could have taken, both of which are not great solutions.

  1. Have a bezel-less display and put Touch ID on the back of the phone - Even with this option, you'd still have to pick up your phone from the desk to unlock the phone since the Touch ID is on the back.
  2. Have a display with bezels and have Touch ID on the front of the phone - This option would have been pretty inexcusable for Apple to take since people have been clamoring for smaller bezels ... Also other companies have been racing towards the bezel less display.
  3. Have a bezel-less display and have Face ID as the unlocking mechanism - This is what Apple went with and frankly, I think its the best solution with the least amount of compromises. Just put your face over the phone to unlock it ...

No one cares about smaller bezels or the need of bezel free smartphones all of a sudden.

Animoji in the rain........what a glorious felling i’m Texting again....

Lmao:D

I have had no issues at all. I lean over it on my desk and FaceID works. I have sunglasses on in my car and FaceID works. I lay in bed with my dog trying to lay on my head, and FaceID works. And, it's insanely fast. I'm coming from a 6S Plus, and am regularly shocked by how quickly the phone unlocks itself.

I have one of these for my iPhone 7 on my desk. I assume I'll have no problem at all using it with my iPhone X once it's delivered.
You will have zero issues. I have a Qi stand and it’s wonderful. It requires zero effort to plug in and faceid is flawless at that angle. Added bonus is the Nokia Qi Charger sitting in the junk box for five years has been given a new life.

I remember the same arguments when Touch ID came out. Does not matter if you want to get used to Face ID, if Apple decides to go in that direction, you will too.

If not Android is your future.

I don't use my phone in the rain.
If you keep doing that you won't have a functioning phone after a while.
I'm almost certain the iPhone 7 Plus has a waterproof rating sufficient to withstand use in the rain, but I could be wrong.

Yes, that is correct but that rating degrades over time and use while the seals and gaskets start to get old.
So chances are after a while of repeat water exposure you'll get corrosion and water damage.
I dont risk getting my phone wet at all.

Seems to be the Apple corporate approach of "You'll buy what we give you and shut your mouth" type of mentality.
If they keep it up they'll start to decline.
Their software is really starting to be crap and their hardware comes out 3-4 years late to the game and getting insanely overpriced.

I agree with much you have to say. They sure sold us on Finger ID and then a few years later dump it and push the Face ID. Just returned my X and back to my 8+. The Size of the device and bezels was not worth giving up my 8+.

There is no doubt that Apple has changed but I can not complain too much as almost all of my IRA is in Apple stock and have made me a LOT of money and some even think it will hit $200 per share.

It's not waterproof rated, It has a water resistant rating of Rated IP67 under IEC standard 60529.

"The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are splash, water, and dust resistant and were tested under controlled laboratory conditions with a rating of IP67 under IEC standard 60529. Splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear."

You have to think beyond phone unlocking. FaceID enables things like convenient private notifications, more streamlined password entry using password managers and I’m sure a bunch of other things

I use the x for development and unlocking it with face id to push builds is very inconvenient. Im going to get a phone stand for it so the phone is always facing me.

I have this on my desk... and Face ID just doesn't work well with it at all. I either have to slouch down in my chair so that my face is level with the phone, or I can tilt the phone backwards so that the Face ID sensor points up towards my face. Either way, it's super inconvenient. I can't say I'm very impressed with Face ID.

That should help. Also try turning off attention. It helps with off angle recognition as phone won’t require directly looking at it.

FaceID is cool and fun, but in day to day usage I don't like it. Unlocking my phone always takes an extra 1-2 seconds compared to touchID, and that will never improve just based on the nature of how you have to execute it. Apple really should have put a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner on this thing as an alternative method of biometric login and security.

Touch ID was the best thing available at the time. Now there is something better. I prefer Face ID as it is more natural to me.

It would have taken more room (smaller battery) and not solved the “on the desk” issue people are complaining about. I’m noticing that Face ID is getting better at opening up my phone even when it is lying flat on my desk. It is adaptive, remember. Touch ID was always a bit twitchy for me so maybe that’s why I don’t miss it.

Saw an article that described how to make Face ID work on a desk; simple, re-register your face at the lower angle rather that straight on, FID will pick up more of the lower portion of your face that it sees from the desk. Not sure about double chins!!!

If you using phone constantly perhaps better to set always on or even disable security during those periods. Just a thought, may make it easier for you.

If FaceID is so much better, why is it slower and clunkier? Pick up/tap, swipe up, wait 1-2 seconds vs placing your thumb on the touchID sensor while lifting it and the phone is already unlocked and at the home screen. It's obvious which is superior.

Great point, thanks. Would also think over time it will learn that view as you authenticate with password and it learns.

Why are yo waiting to swipe up. I don’t works just fine. Tap, swipe up while viewing screen. No need to separate functions. Face ID work every time for me doing it that way.

Like every other technology released it will improve over time. You chose to adopt 1st gen tech and you expect it to work flawlessly and that's not how it works. Engineers need time and testing and learn from data in order to improve it. Look at 1st gen touch ID compared to now, there's a big difference. Same thing here. I wouldn't expect face ID to be perfected until 3rd generation at least.
