Is use of the front-facing camera going to be limited to using Apple's FaceTime? I personally find the front-facing camera on the iPhone 4 useless since many of my friends don't have an iPhone 4.

If it was possible to use something like Skype video on the iPad using the front-facing camera that would be very cool.

The newest version of Skype on iPhone does video calls with the camera. So I don't see why they won't support it on the iPad also.

Tablet with a camera sounds stupid.

1) For two-camera FaceTime. (Front camera when speaking, back camera when wanting to show the other person something).

2) Augmented Reality apps that overlay information onto video feed (e.g. Yelp, which shows nearby restaurants!)

3) Other photo apps that require a back camera - e.g. stitching together panoramic photos, cataloging things, etc.

4) Fun with photobooth! I'm sure some dev will figure out a clever game to use the camera with...

Having said that, I don't think a camera is ESSENTIAL to the tablet/iPad experience. But neither is a camera on a phone or a camera on a laptop...but it's nice to have them rather than not have them...

I see no reason why it would restricted. The Skype app for iPhone makes full use of both the front and rear cameras.

I think the more difficult issue is how to position an iPad so it's aimed at you and not getting you from unflattering angles...

How about Facetime for mac?
Apple's announced a beta for it, does that mean the next mbp will have a rear camera?

The Mac is the only exception to what I said because of obvious reasons. It really just serves as a portal to connect to the FaceTime iDevices. In the case of the iPad and all iDevices FaceTime = 2 cameras, period!

Again, that is not even to mention the potential for apps to use a back camera on the new iPad. Games, augmented reality, scanning, you can go on and on with the possibilities. It also unifies the platform between iPhone and iPad more for developers. That is happening, you hear about the ipad getting more and more iPhone hardware such as a proximity sensor, maybe a vibrating motor, etc. etc.

What is happening in tech is devices are becoming more and more aware of their surroundings. Steve has talked about this. Cameras and sensors make that happen. That is why the iPad and other devices will be getting cameras and more and more of these kinds of sensors.

That is already possible on the iPhone. It would be no different on the iPad. Just a matter of the devs updating their apps.

Agreed.Seem obvious to me too.
Of course then people point out that Facetime on the Mac uses only one camera, but since that's an entirely different device it's not much of an argument.

Exactly. That is totally different. On the Mac FaceTime is simply a portal to connect to the FaceTime iDevices. Any iDevice with FaceTime will have 2 cameras, period!

Sorry for the double post. Didn't realize I was replying in the same thread.

Retina display
5MP front and rear camera
1gb ram
128gb storage
dual core processor
Better speaker.
Proper Safari (not this mobile rubbish)

I think you will be wrong. My estimate is very conservative:

Front camera for Facetime and back camera for video / low res photos, as in iPod touch - certainly not 5mpx

512 mb ram

64 gb storage

same apple a4 processor, but slight speed bump

better speaker and other minor form factor changes

gyroscope

I think people will be very disappointed. If I'm wrong, great.

the back camera on ipad 2 will be atleast 5MP, as thats what is on iphone4
and I do think iPad will be getting a new cpu, more than just speed bump
and dual gpu for sure

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

For the people saying it's impossible for an iPad to have a retina display your wrong. The new rumored gpu is more then capable of handling that high res. Plus make that dual core and dual core CPU and there is no doubt... I don't think price is an issue either, prices go down over time so just because the a4 is dirt cheap now doesn't mean it was in 2010 same goes for the display. Another thing to consider is the fact that apple set very high margins on the first iPad in case it failed like many of the tablets before it, now that they know there's a market for it their margins can get smaller.(not saying that apple would ever do that but something to consider)

Um, April 9th anyone?

Anyone noticed, that the calendar icon on this shot shows a "9"?

My iPad shows a "27" in the preferences, as iPad 1 was introduced January 27th 2010.
So my guess, iPad 2 will be introduced February 9th 2011 !!

It was posted a few days back that the iPad would most likely be released either April 2nd or 9th, both saturdays like the original iPad release day.

You mention the 9th and that rumored date didn't ring a bell?

Also everyone, please stop with the moronic "back camera is dumb/makes no sense/ is stupid, etc. It's a great idea that will work with a billion apps. Do you realize you're asking for LESS features? I think THAT'S truly stupid.

What's up with the super thin Bezel/Lack of home button in that photo?

Possibly nothing. it is likely that whomever made the screen shot clipped it to show only the screen since that is the pertinent info

Although I would be careful about getting too worked up. The first beta had those cool multitasking gestures and then Apple told folks with this beta that those won't actually be released any time soon but were just to show where eventually things were going. It is possible that at least one or two of these new features is not for this round of updates. I'm guessing FaceTime would be a lock for now but the photobooth and rear camera might be for later. In the case of the rear camera maybe even ipad 3 later

Bloody stupid

Yeah, I'm going to wave something the size of a coffee table book around to try and take a picture......
