I wish Apple would let us install iOS 6.1.6 even if our devices support iOS 7. Newer is not always better.

Can you buy a windows 8 laptop and replace it with windows 7? If so are a lot of people doing that? When iPhone 5 was released were people wishing Apple would let them downgrade to iOS 5?

Some people here make fun of Android and how the latest OS is on so few devices and yet we get others complaining because Apple won't let them downgrade to a previous OS. In some ways iOS 7 reminds me of Aqua. People survived that, I think they'll survive iOS 7 too. But if they hate it that much then I guess they need to switch to Android or Windows Phone because the ship has sailed and I don't see it turning back.

MS Supported XP because they had to not because they wanted to.
Source? As far as I'm concerned, Microsoft could have ditched XP whenever they wanted. Sure, popular demand most likely convinced them to support it for longer than usual. But there is no denying that every single one of Microsoft's OSs have been supported for a decent amount of time. Much longer than Apple has ever done in my time of buying their products.

And unlike MS, Apple is it chained down in the name of backwards compatibility for *insert esoteric app A that is critical for A B C organisation.*
Backwards compatibility is a good thing you know. It means I don't have to shell out for new apps every OS release. Again, Microsoft choose to put so much time into compatibility, even going out of their way to make sure "killer apps" function fine on new OSs.
I first heard about this from one of the developers of the hit game SimCity, who told me that there was a critical bug in his application: it used memory right after freeing it, a major no-no that happened to work OK on DOS but would not work under Windows where memory that is freed is likely to be snatched up by another running application right away. The testers on the Windows team were going through various popular applications, testing them to make sure they worked OK, but SimCity kept crashing. They reported this to the Windows developers, who disassembled SimCity, stepped through it in a debugger, found the bug, and added special code that checked if SimCity was running, and if it did, ran the memory allocator in a special mode in which you could still use memory after freeing it.

And truly MS turned their back on XP as soon as Vista came out...7 years ago.
Um, right. I guess that why I (and the rest of the XP users out there) have received new features, bug fixes and other updates beyond the release of Vista. All the way until this month, this year, which (surprise surprise) is the official day MS can turn their back on XP.

It's not working for me calling my wife and both of us are using iOS7 - THIS IS NOT A iOS6 ONLY ISSUE.

And yes people use FaceTime, usually to stay in touch with close family that is out of town.

Yes you can, actually! :D If you have Windows 8 Pro, you can downgrade to Windows 7. HP also reintroduced sales of PCs with Windows 7 pre-installed "by popular demand". So there's apparently a sizable amount that are not interested in moving to Windows 8. In addition, Windows 7 growth has outpaced Windows 8 growth in several quarters.

The Android comparison doesn't really make any sense. The problem with Android updates is that many customers don't even have the option to update because their phones are not supported.

No they couldn't have. Exemplified by the fact that its only just being shut down in 2014. And thats because Win 7 is now the top dog.

Backwards compatibility is a good thing you know.

Backwards compatibility is a good thing. Dinosaur compatibility is not. It holds companies and their customers back.

You misunderstand. They turned their back on XP means they realised it was time to move on otherwise they wouldn't have developed Vista. Supporting XP however, they had no choice but to because people didn't move on. If anything you guys were part of a problem MS had to deal with.

Look, you are and i aren't going to agree that much is clear.

At the end of the day FaceTime will be restored for iOS 6 users who don't want to upgrade. But sooner or later they'll have no choice but to move on or move somewhere else.

If you choose to (i know some don't have a choice) opt-out of running newer software or hardware thats your prerogative. Just don't be surprised and/or complain when a company and its 3rd party devs decide to stop investing the resources needed to drag you along in order to keep pace with the generation(s) in front of you.

I own products from MS, Google and the fruit company. All have their issues and their strengths. But for some reason people like to view one or the other with either rose-tinted glasses or unreasonable disdain/expectation.

If you're a software company and know your going to have glitches/issues -Dont use the term "It Just Works"...

Subaru has an ad campaign here in the US that touts their safety record. The newest commercial shows a totaled out Subaru SUV, and the cop, followed by the wrecker driver, followed by the junkyard owner all use the phrase, "They lived." The point of the commercial is that a Subaru is supposedly a very safe automobile. Does this mean that, in your eyes Subaru should not be able to tout their relative safety if anyone has ever died while driving one?

Fact is, Apple products do "just work." Much more so than any other tech company. But nothing is perfect. Tech is going to break. It's not the fact that it's totally impervious to failure. It's that you don't have to spend hours trying to figure it out, and jump through hoops to use the technology when it's working normally. That's what the phrase, "It just works." means.

My refrigerator just works, too. I don't have to root it, or reboot it twice a day, or take a class to know how to get my stuff cold in it, or to make ice. But that doesn't mean it won't ever break. Stuff breaks.

Reports show although it may be running faster, its still no where near as fast as ios 6 is.

And we know how much many Apple users hate lag/slowness.

was that for the iPhone 4 or the later iPhones? I felt the pinch on my iPhone 4, but when I got my 5S those times were no longer the case.

People have ever used facetime? Ever?? (Apart, of course, from that very first time to see what it was like)
I definitely use FT. I work from a home office and >50% of the 'phone' time is with FT. Longer "hands-on" FT calls are not an exception. Meanwhile also got most of my family to use it and they love it.

Not being able to use it today with my mother (who still has an iOS6 iPad) and having to revert back to a old fashioned phone call was kind of ..., well, weird ..

My guess is the number of iOS users that would want to downgrade is small enough it's not worth Apple's (and developers) trouble to support multiple OS's. My point about Android is its amusing that we make fun of the fact the latest OS is on so few devices but then at the same time complain because Apple won't let us downgrade to an older version of iOS.

I've got 5 devices here and all iOS7 are working - only the iOS6 fail. There's a bunch of things that can go wrong with FT, You've probably already seen this but just in case http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3367

People still use FaceTime frequently?

Hmm

Interesting
yes actually in the medical field it proving quite helpful to connect with schools in the special education departments to remotely assist children with various disabilities saving the schools lots if money from having to pay therapists to travel to the schools to consult.

Microsoft doesn't exactly "support" users, they merely provide patches. Apple however ceases to provide patches quickly for older OSes, but supports it through its Genius bar and phone support. Go figure.

Please don't take offence. But I'm guessing you're world isn't much bigger than where you live. Because it if were, you'd understand how great FaceTime has become now that voice only calls can be made.

It's fully integrated into the iPhone and works exactly like a normal call. Not only that, but I find the quality superior to Skype as well. It also doesn't use a lot of data.

Plus in some countries, making calls to iPhones on different carriers costs money. By using FaceTime, it doesn't. Of course you are using data, but that is literally nothing compared to calling rates.

With friends and family living in various countries around the world and doing business in other countries, the seamless way FaceTime works with the phone means I can makes calls exactly as if I were in the same country.

This is a massive step forward compared to the old days of insanely priced international calls.

And it works on 3G/4G/Wireless.

I hope this helps for you to better understand how FaceTime is actually important to a lot of users you probably didn't think about.

Thanks.

Sister had this issue last night... Updated her to iOS 7, fixed the problem no problem.

except she now has you to thank for having to live the nightmare that is iOS7. probably would've rather done without FaceTime than have to endure iOS7.

Yah, not impressed that Apple hasn't updated their Status page to reflect this.

Sarcasm? You know we are human, right? We adapt to our environment. Adapting to iOS 7 is no different. :apple:

FaceTime's video and voice quality is far superior to Skype in most cases.

It wasn't just 6. It was also earlier versions of 7. My wife had issues yesterday with facetime and she also had issues today. She is on 7.02. She called Apple, updated to the latest version of 7 and it works now.

Aqua was at least innovative. iOS 7 is just a shoddy and uninspired fashion statement.
