If the rumors about an event possibly showing off the SDK are true, hopefully there will be some type of announcement soon. The more information that comes out, the more excited I get.

Here is the other thing I am wondering... If apps are distributed through iTunes, will users be allowed to use iTunes gift cards to make purchases?

Why do people see this as bad news.
Why do you still want to Jailbreak when there will be a legit way of dooing it round the corner.
Just because they're putting the apps on iTunes doesn't mean they'll charge for every single one of them.

What? No, it's not cool! Another developer has been ripped from the iPhone community to be Apple's lapdog for their corporatization of something that should have been in place to begin with.

My major fear here is that there will be no free downloads, even for stupid solitaire or something, it'll be a $5.00 fee even though a developer wants to make it for free right now.

I am very much not in favor of Apple taking over and controlling this process. Tiny-Code said themselves we'd be seeing them on iTunes... Perhaps I'm just fearing the worst, but I've seen what Apple does in the past. Develops a popular product on a maximum-security platform. No one can get in unless they're bed-buddies with Apple.

Remember iPod+HP? HP RAN from that "partnership."

I'm not going to fully bash the system until it's up, running, and I've seen it work, but at this point in time, I am very skeptical/hesitant.

If more people donate to developers, then they might have enough money to stay independent. I am sure Apple made a good offer, one that you probably can't refuse.

Apple will save 1.2 for something really stupid, 1.1 was the iTunes Wi-fi Music Store.... so i bet 1.2 will be the iTunes Wi-fi Video Store..

Um, official native App support.

hmm. i wonder if there will be a fw update before march 1.
ie, I am visiting U.S. and A march first and I'm hoping to get an unlockable 16gb iphonez0rs for use in Torontonia Canadia

anyone care to speculate on my behalf?

Clive,

Are there many developers who would produce truly useful (or fun) apps for free, without incorporating a scheme to generate revenues from advertising? Maybe that's not a biz model right now? Is it possible Apple's thinking is that it's better to get the apps out for a (modest) fee without ads, thus making the experience a more pleasant one? Even a plan that gave users the option of using apps for free (with ads) OR for a fee, is somewhat counter to apple's push for simplicity (see the article also on macrumors today, re: the iPhone encouraging mobile use, in part because of the simplicity of its fee plan). Can you expand on your concerns in light of these thoughts? Thanks. --terry

There are many free podcasts on iTunes, there are many free video podcasts on iTunes, there are some free songs and some free videos. However, there are no free games for the iPod, but then again, all the games for iPod are from large games companies and running on hardware that doesn't have an open SDK. So there's no reason to assume there will or will not be free applications for the touch and phone. The evidence shows that it could go either way.

Or both ways. In fact Apple has already stated that it will be up to the developers to decide what if anything they will charge for software. What a radical plan! The degree of alarmism about this is... alarming.

so what are the key apps?

I'd like to see some suggested "top five wanted apps" or "top five expected apps", on this thread. I sense my eyes can be opened wider to the possibilities. I know some smart developers will surprise us with can't-do-without killer apps we hadn't even thought about. But what are people here wanting? Expecting? Thanks.

Surely there will be a way to get apps onto your iPod for free. After all, developers need to be able to get them on there for testing. I have a couple of app ideas but they're strictly for internal use and I certainly won't be listing them on iTunes. As mentioned already, I think that this will be more like the podcast directory.

My prediction: There will be a new genre of social online gaming that is richer than the old MUDs but lighter than the PC games like WoW. Waiting for a bus? Pull out your iPhone and play for 10 minutes. On a lunch break or at a coffee shop? Find a group and go on a short 30 minute quest.

Oooh, Ultima Online! Or maybe a remake of Neverwinter Nights (the original AOL version)!

I love my iPhone but I want it bigger! I want apps and I want to play. Please let the SDK be free fast. 3rd party app for real, and no monkey business. And here you have one of my dream apps... (sorry to bring the tone of the conversation down, but what the heck, I want a real iPhone with out jailB stuff)

evidence? you want evidence? :)

... i think Apple judge developers on their products, not on their supposed lack of English skills (of which i can find no evidence).

I'd hope that's how apple judges developers, but there was plenty of evidence of mistakes in the brief statement: in just the second paragraph the words Wallpaper (a product name), firmware, and chance are all misspelled. In the next two short paragraphs the typo "ont he" appears twice for "on the and "your" is used instead of the correct "you're".

why's that matter? well, if these people are coding i'd hope they're paying much more attention to detail. I'd suspect the fella was just excited and typing hurriedly. but people judge performance that way, just as your attire, grooming and grammar are evaluated in a job interview--even if you're interviewing for a programming position.

so i'll give the guy a pass this time. but i'd be watching his products more closely than the next fella's, at least for a while.

blame ee cummings for the capitalization in this post.

We'll, I hardly think that developers of applications for hacked iPhones constitutes "THE iPhone community".
Just a tad self-important there.
And the practice of hiring hackers to work from the inside is a long-standing industry practice. Nothing new here.
I dare say a lot of 3rd party iPhone developers have had this opportunity in mind all along as an entrance into 'the beast' (i.e. a real job.)

Don't read much?

What are you talking about? This is great! Now I can start paying for all the free programs I've been downloading for so long.

Anything Apple can do to get more programmers working on iTunes for-profit work and fewer on installer.app out-of-the-goodness-of-your-heart work is good for Apple.

And what's good for Apple is good for the country!

Seriously though, it drives me crazy that there is going to be one more way for us to get nickel-and-dimed. Call me greedy, but I don't even think I should have to pay for ringtones, etc. from songs I already own.

Apple didn't make the song/ringtone decision--the record labels did, and this has been posted to death for six months. And if you and some others here can't afford $5 for an app, maybe a part time job is in order. Try this: "Good morning, welcome to Wal-Mart". Come on, people, break a sweat.

I am really confused here...How are you being nickel-and-dimed to death???
For all Mac users with Garageband and Windows users using something else like audacity, its perfectly FREE and legit to create your own ringtones and they do not cost one red cent...and this IS from stuff you already own. Been doing it with 1.1.2 and 1.1.3. Apple has authorized this with the last update and the Garageband update. Your insane if you are still paying for your own ringtones.

This is a little off topic, but its not legit.... not that i agree with the law, or the RIAA, but its a different license to use the music as a ringtone...

MMMMM :) I've been waiting for the FULL iTunes WIFI store :D Just like Apple TV has it all now, Video, Music, Podcasts, etc. I want all that on my iTunes WIFI store. WOW that would be AWESOME :) And then if we can stream all content from iTunes on our home computers over WIFI to our iPhone and Touch mmmmmmmm hehe :D Come to think of it, it would be just like an Apple TV but mobile :) YES PLEASE :)
