Ugh...you guys are killing me. I need to start a new game like I need a hole in the head (let alone a MMRPG), but you've got me thinking I need to give 76 a try. Sorry maflynn!
Opinion: F4 is a wonderful solo game. Caveat: You don’t get lonely playing solo games as compared to multi-player. Some of this has to do with how immersed you get in your games. And even with limited dialog options with your companions, they will ask you for helping them with a personal issue, and they're there with you in fights. They gain affinity for you or you can piss them off based on the individual, who you help, and who you kill. They have different standards. As I recall Piper likes Synths and when you help them, Cait no so much. Cait is better for Nuka World when you ally (temporarily or permanently with raiders) and Piper is not. Paladin Danse does not like synths or gouls, even the non-feral ones. Romanceable companions will simplistically grow to love you, by virtue of your company and sharing experiences and you’ll get a buff for sleeping with them, and at least one will offer a saucy comment when you arise in the morning.how is it as a solo game though? ive got it but didnt play much. now enjoying a wander through fallout 4 for probably the 4th or 5th time, unusual for me.
if i played fallout 76 solely as a solo player, wanting something like fallout 3 or 4 from it, what would i think?
I totally agree. I actually think the majority of players play it soloThere is a lot of content to play. I’d say I play maybe 90% solo.
There’s plenty of quests and exploration to do.
The content where you would suggest requires a “team” is small. But when I’ve not been playing with friends you don’t need any voice comms for them, or find discord servers. I’ve always just jumped on a public team and done it.
It’s very friendly for solo players.
What do you mean by having more control over the environment? For those considering it, just remember in the solo environment of a F4 or F3, you have more control over the environment, the grind, and there are no tourists, it’s your world. 😄
There's two aspects of the solo play.how is it as a solo game though? ive got it but didnt play much. now enjoying a wander through fallout 4 for probably the 4th or 5th time, unusual for me.
It’s been years since I played 76. How much does a Fallout First subscription cost? Recently F4 was on sale for $10, a hands down deal for anyone who has not yet played in this world. What do you mean by having more control over the environment?
Have you played the game recently? Its markedly different then when you first stated you quit playing because of the grind. I'm not saying there is no grind, but the game is very different today then 3 years ago.
There's two aspects of the solo play.
Firstly, in the public world where you are along side other players. You can do the various quests all by your lonesome problem free. You can join in on some events. There are normal events, that occur in game and timed events, through out the year, each one very different. These can be very fun in the open world with other players. You don't need to be on a team or anything just playing cooperatively. Scorched earth is a regular event triggered when someone launches a Nuke at the Scorched Beast Queen. Its a blast have 6, 8 10 people try to take the SBQ down, and you get some nice loot.
Second aspect - playing solo in a private world. This is only available as a Fallout First subscriber. You get your very own world, and this is closest to a fallout 4 experience. Its great for looting, as no one else is around to take loot, you get to do anything your want w/o running into anyone. Doing events solo is very hard, some are down right impossible, though some high level players try to challenge themselves to solo some of the harder events.
A final thought on the subscription, by paying for the sub,
- You get a monthly allotment of atoms, which is nice - no need to spend real money in the atom shop.
- You get extra rewards in the Season pass.
- You get the private world as I mentioned.
- You get a "survival tent" A secondary camp that you can plop down anywhere as a bed, storage, and is a free fast travel (fast travel in the game costs caps)
- Finally you also get unlimited scrap and ammo storage - this is HUGE. We are limited to 1200 units of storage and that is easily eaten up with weapons, armor, and junk. You need junk for crafting, and it’s so easy to be near the limit yet have almost no junk to craft. This is the primary reason many of us subscribe
Does the barrel rotate? One of the rewards for playing the season is the cremator weapon. You get the weapon fairly early on in the season ranking and then various mods become available as you progress.
Its probably one of the most powerful weapons in the game, Bethesda already nerfed it recently, but its still insanely powerful. Except for bosses, you basically can one-shot every enemy. I and another player took down a SBQ in mere minutes using this weapon.
Its been really fun doing events with the cremator. Angry Turtle, one of the more popular FO76 youtuber provides some great info here. its version 2 because of the nerf.
No, it fires 4 shots at once, its really great in mobs - take out a gaggle of enemies. i found the weapon to be great during the Eviction Notice event. I also carry a single barrel cremator, which is good for single enemies like the SBQDoes the barrel rotate?

If I was still in "multiplayer mode" I'd probably be playing this...Let me resurrect this thread, its been almost a year since I last posted and Bethesda introduced some major changes that have resonated with the majority of players.
- Raids - something like a Daily Ops, a multi-level activity where at each stage you need to kill or acommplish something as a team. Its designed to make it virtually impossible to solo, and if you die, you're done - you're out of the raid. No re-joining. As a solo player how doesn't do teams or team activities, I've not done this. The rewards are insane however. Tons of XP, legendaries and what not
- 4 star legendary items. They added a fourth star to legendary weapons and armor, and a whole list of new attributes. Right now, getting a 4th star item is limited to raids, but they promised it will be introduced to the overall game.
- Legendary crafting - You can now learn or apply specific legendary effects, for instance, if you have a nocturnal fixer, and you have a anti-armor mod. You can apply that mod to your weapon. Previously there was no way to change a legendary effect. Learning mods is a thing, and you can trade/sell these mods. Learning a legendary mod, is done by scrapping legendary items, however the percentage is pretty damn low - 1.5%
- Reworked perk cards, Bethesda is been and continues to rework perk cards, making them more dependent on how much a given SPECIAL is rather then adding stars to the given perk card
- Ghoulification, you can now become a ghoul, not just a skin, but an actual ghoul with its own set of attributes, effects, downsides and specific ghoul perk cards. This has been hugely popular.
- Reworked Furious effect, I wanted to break this out on its own because of the profound impact. Its part of the onslaught system where the effect is stacked. For every onslaught number you get a percentage increase on damage. I am now able to one shoot super mutants and most other non-bosses. There's two options, onslaught increasing with every hit, making each subsequent shot more powerful but the onslaught decreases every second. Great for fast shooting automatic weapons. And the reverse, you start off with a high onslaught and every shot decreases the stack but it builds automatically. Great for single fire and slow firing weapons. My furious plasma castor starts off with a stack of 25 and I can clear out a location and largely keep my stack at 25 making each shot incredibly powerful
- Mini-seasons, kind of like a season but it runs every two weeks. Not surer about this change, but its a nice addition
Yeah, I get it. My in game time has take a major hit. I don't do team activities, so raids, daily ops and for the most part expeditions. Though expeditions can be soloed, I just don't find them terribly enjoyable. You can do the first stage of the raid solo, but so far my efforts have been fruitless. As of right now, its the only way to get 4 star mods so I may retire. If I was still in "multiplayer mode" I'd probably be playing this...
So a new season is starting and a new mini-game (not sure what to call it). We will now have the ability to fish in the game. There will be rewards, and challenges related to this.
I can't think of a more stupid idea, I'm not a fisherman, I've done it as a kid, and truth be told, I find it very boring. I'm not about to do a boring activity in a game when I find it boring in RL.
I may be taking a break from this season. I'm unsure if this is a timed event or going to be a permanent fixture to the game.
They're also reworking even more perk cards, this started a few updates and it seems to be gaining steam. I'm unsure if the changes are good/bad/indifferent. I'll now how it impacts me after the Tuesday update lands.
They added fishing to Skyrim, though I don't know to what extent. In this implementation, it has specific rewards, some of which no doubt will be rare so you're forced to grind. They probably decided to put fishing in because many other games of this type have fishing.
In every game I’ve ever played that allowed fishing, I only did it for some important reward, not for the relaxation. They added fishing to Skyrim, though I don't know to what extent. In this implementation, it has specific rewards, some of which no doubt will be rare so you're forced to grind.
I saw some poor soul on reddit say how boring fishing is, how could this ever be considered a fun activity. He was eviscerated by the totally unbiased reddit crowd![]()

I feel your pain.Bethesda updated the PTS and provided release notes. The proposed changes are such that the players are losing their collective minds - yet again. Bethesda may back off the changes given the amount of whining - they've done that in the past
Anyways long story short, Bethesda is making ultracite ammo to be "premium and you'll not get any in the context ammo drops (you get the type of ammo you used when looting dead enemies) I guess there's a lot of players who use ultracite ammo, which is a certain type that does more damage to certain creatures. I never used that ammo type, so this change doesn't impact or matter to me.
With that said, Bethesda is going through yet another rebalancing of weapons, nerfing some, buffing others, and tbh, I'm very tired of this. They totally reworked the perk cards last update that largely made the commando build weaker for me. I had to switch build types because of this. They're also making changes to VATs and non Vats.
I'm at a point in the game, where I play less and less as there's not much for me to do. I have yet to fire up 76 just so I can go fishing.
I've had a good run with 76, but I think my involvement may be coming to an end, or at the very least an extended break.
I think either this fall or winter they promised their biggest update yet (not sure if this PTS stuff is that), so I may see what's going on with that, but I'll explore other games, given the steam sale is happening
I'm thinking its change for the sake of change. They're reworking the heavy gunner perk cards this time around. I'm unsure if the melee perk cards got this treatment yet, but from what I can see on reddit, there's been so. much push back that Bethesda stated that these changes will slow down and they realize how impactful this is to players.I guess it’s the problem with MMOs

My play time has decreased, I do the season, and I had hit rank 100. of the season a few weeks back, and I was done, but I needed the rank 150 rewards, as I spent my entire caps balance on some 4 star mods. I just hit rank 150, but in the grind, I had already made up the 40,000 cap deficit so I don't even need that reward
I'm going to move on to another game, now that I'm largely done with the season, most likely cyberpunk if it lands on steam and I don't have to re-buy the game.
