I have to disagree. While Star Wars a new Hope was awesome, The Empire Strikes back was better in a lot of ways.

As a film, V is probably better than IV, but without IV, V wouldn't have happened. And whilst IV stands up well on its own, I don't think V does without IV and VI. So whilst V is probably the best, I personally can't rate it above IV.

As for VII v III.5 - I've seen both now several times (although nowhere near as many as IV-VI) and find it difficult to pick a favourite. I like the continuity of VII and the soundtrack, but the story of III.5 is better and the last 30 minutes are epic. Maybe if John Williams had scored III.5 it would be better, but I still struggle a little with it because he didn't.

Roll on December for VIII. If it's better than VII and III.5 I'll be happy :D

No question but if you're looking at the quality of the film, story line, depth of character development. Empire Strikes Back all the way, regardless if you throw in the fact that it needed a new hope to be made.

I've worked this out scientifically:

4 = 5 > 6 > 7 = 3.5 > 3 >> 2 > 1

Yeek, 2 is waaay worse than 1. 2 is appalling.

1 definitely looks the best out of the prequels; CGI is great as it's used more sparingly and the real sets adds some great realism. But nothing really happens in 1. 3 is pretty fun but essentially like watching a video game. Every single shot has a gratuitous amount of CGI.

Wasn't huge on 7 after I watched it in the cinema. Not bad but didn't have much substance, especially on repeated views. I hate to say it but I think I prefer the prequels to 7. Sure I've watched them about a billion times and maybe nostalgia is talking, though it seems as of late that the prequel hate isn't as serious now. Possibly it's due to all the memes made... but I get the feeling people are finding a new appreciation for them.

I have to disagree. While Star Wars a new Hope was awesome, The Empire Strikes back was better in a lot of ways.

Possibly, but ANH (I'd recommend watching Harmy's Despecialised Edition of EP IV) is arguably the only film that stands the best on its own, without any previous context. Seriously, watch Harmy's version. It's a thousand times better than the remastered that George got his grubby hands all over. Retconning CGI, changing the Greedo scene (Han didn't shoot first - Greedo didn't shoot at all), adding in Jabba with that clumsy dialogue... it's a shame George still owns the rights to 4/5/6, else I'm sure Disney would have considered a bluray release of the original originals.

I adore IV but this is only going on the original as it should have been. The remastered is close to unwatchable.

With Trevorrow fired as director of Episode IX, it looks like George Lucas' 1977 prophecy in Rolling Stone magazine may end up coming true!

"What I want to do is direct the last sequel. I could do the first one and the last one and let everyone else do the ones in between."
Disney already stated that the Star Wars universe is so rich it can make movies indefinitely. Episode IX will wrap up the story line of Skywalker family, but its not the end of star wars by any stretch of the imagination.
It is the final sequel of the original series that George Lucas had envisioned when he gave that interview in 1977.

Isn't this due out in 4 months? If so, I thought they'd be in editing and in post production by now.

If this is the last Skywalker Family story, it makes me even more pissed they wasted episode 7 on retread story telling. A giant failure for Abrams, maybe not in his wallet, but from a money grubbing aspect, devoid of original creativity.

Episode VIII is due out in 98 days (or so). Episode IX is ramping up, so its early enough that the change shouldn't be too disruptive (I hope)

Imo, 'The Empire Strikes Back', it gave the original trilogy more thrill, especially when Vader confessed to Luke after the Saber duel on cloud city that he was his father.
I remember watching that back then and it was like an  moment .

Well, maybe I'm the minority around here, but I'm happy J.J Abrams is returning. He rehabilitated the brand after the catastrophic prequels. He made Star Wars fun again and I did enjoy TFA quite a bit.

I thought he did a good job too.

Technically it was good, with an embarrassment of a story, if you can remember episodes 4-6. He needs to find better writers with an original idea, and not sell out for the $$ taking advantage of the SW Affictionatos who will pay for basically any force story. ;)

If you can remember. Probably could write the script from memory!

I didn't start watching Star Wars until 1997 when the Special Editions were released. I even used to collect the Taco Bell pogs and recorded that video above that I completely lost. Much thanks to those two YouTubers for uploading that Sci-Fi Channel feature for the Special Editions back in 1997.

From 1997-1998, Return Of The Jedi was my favorite.

From 1999-2004, The Empire Strikes Back was my favorite.

From 2005-2016, Revenge Of The Sith was my favorite.

In December 2015, I actually ranked The Force Awakens as my #3 favorite. Not anymore. Then again, I really liked The Phantom Menace, Attack Of The Clones, and The Last Jedi the first couple times I saw them. Feelings change over time.

Currently, it's back to the first SW film I ever saw.. The Empire Strikes Back. Has all my favorite characters in one film. Revenge Of The Sith didn't have Han Solo. I also started to appreciate more of ROTJ than I do for ANH. There was more emotional scenes from ROTJ even with its flaws than ANH.

Current Rankings
V - The Empire Strikes Back
III - Revenge Of The Sith
VI - Return Of The Jedi
IV - A New Hope
Rogue One
VII - The Force Awakens
I - The Phantom Menace
VIII - The Last Jedi
II - Attack Of The Clones

No new characters from the Disney Star Wars would rank in my Top 10 except for droids like BB-8 and K-2SO. Disney is just killing off old favorites.

Top 4: Vader, Yoda, Han, Obi-Wan, always...
