Gee, all those GREAT stations on FM! Piles and piles of crap, with advertising. But, that's Pai's point, right? Maybe he'd like an AM chip, so we can get Alex Jones and Limbaugh!
Probably FM radio stations contributed to his election so he is pushing phone companies in support of FM stations.
It is good to have options, but least on my priority list.
Please increase competition in ISP/Cable market, that will fix lot of problems customers are facing.

Um, the 1982 Sony Walkman (the DD Series) didn't have a radio receiver, it only played cassette tapes.

Europe are pushing to switch off FM and go DAB only.

You know I never knew that an iPhone didn't have an FM radio function - what a brain dead outcome. My old Nokia not only has an FM receiver, it has an FM transmitter too! I always thought it unlikely I'd ever buy an iPhone, now I know I never will.

As to DAB – it is true, there is some movement towards switching off FM and moving to DAB in Europe (some countries have done it, or are in the process of doing it). But that is no defence for Apple - if they can't do FM I can't see that they are going to do DAB.

(FWIW my old Nokia doesn't do DAB directly, but you could buy an accessory headset to link to that enabled DAB - and this is six-seven year old phone.)

Right-wing radio talk shows never took off on podcasts and live streams. They still linger on AM stations, farting out nonsense and conservative conspiracy theories. Giving these bottom feeders' bad ideas a way to pollute modern devices is a bad idea.
There are lots of community radio stations on AM as well not just right wing propaganda. But this article is about FM radio chips instead.

Subjective, it is either my choice which is always good and if I do not like something it is a bad choice. One persons trash is another persons gold. No one is forcing you at gunpoint to use it :)

No, there's iHeart Radio for the junk radio fans, a whole ton of them.

If not mistaken iHeartRadio requires a WiFi or 3G/LTE data connection. This is pertaining to FM radio. iHeartRadio has FM radio, however to use it on iOS you need to have an app with a data connection. :)

FM Radio is 10 mins. of music, 30 mins. of ads, no thanks.
It depends on what stations you listen to. Our local NPR station is on FM. Our local classical station went public four years ago, no more commercials, just a few pledge drives a year.

However, most of the local sports broadcasts are on AM radio and sadly there's no circuitry for that in iOS devices. Not sure how feasible that would be, I understand that FM and AM radio antennas have significantly different requirements.

Your headphone cable was how it was done in the iPod

This is how it is done on all devices I've ever come across - Sony and Nokia phones, for example. I use mine in the car with my car stereo, because the FM radio and music options are better from the phone.

You obviously don't get BBC R4, BBC R3, BBC R2, BBC 5 LIVE etc on FM etc in Los Angeles

Just because it is this way in my local, that is how the world is mentality. Step outside that box or would it be the walled garden. ;):p:D

who listens to FM radio anymore unless they really have to?
Lots of people listen to FM, except for those with beats headphones listening to beats station on iPhone. How unoriginal is the beats apple lifestyle! So packaged.

This would come in handy for situations where towers come down or are swamped with traffic due to a disaster. I have an old radio at home with batteries for those situations and I have one in my car but it wouldn't hurt to have one on my phone.

After reading all this I've got to dig out my little nano 6th gen, I used to use it for radio. Cute, looks exactly like my watch :)

I had a Toshiba KT-R2 about that time - it has a special "cassette" module that received FM.
Whoa! I had one of those too, or something similar. I totally forgot about that little gem. (This was after my first Sony Walkman ... a Christmas gift ... took a dip in the pool.)
