Episode 2- Transistion from normalcy to civil unrest, rioting, and panic.Thumbs up!

Agreed. The tension is building. I liked the scene in downtown LA with the protests. Mom comes on scene with the husband and she sees the hazmat team exiting the vehicle. It finally sinks in what her ex-husband has been worried about.

I also really like the kid, his name is escaping me right now, that meets up with the main character at the school. I hope we see him again and not as a walker.

Tobias. I like him too. Thinking about this scenario, while you could make an argument about finding a good fortifiable location in the big city, I'd view people as actually more of a problem than the walkers, and the fact that the food supply would be wiped out in short order by looting would force you to expose yourself to escape and be out on the road. No good choices all fraught with danger.

I think that has really been the core of this show and the original TWD. The people are the problem! There were a few people who had the right idea and are trying to get out. But like most things in LA, trying to get from point A to point B is measured in time not physical miles! LOL

The overhead shot of the freeway with all the white and red lights. Me and the wife looked at each and said, that looks like a normal night/early morning day on the road!

I agree. When the last hurricane came through Houston, they advised an orderly evacuation and people ended up stuck on the highway for 12 hours and ran out of gas. You'd have to be well ahead of the maddened crowd to escape.

I liked episode two quite a bit more than the first one. I'm glad they're taking things at the pace they are. It's still very far from an outbreak at this point.

I agree that this episode was a lot better and it has a building up aspect to it. I also agree with the pace. I think some people were expecting absolute zombified apocalypse from the very beginning. The fact that the time frame is during TWC's Rick Grimes coma gives it some insight of how things are going to go down and zombie killing 101.

A lot of folks were expecting just that, or I should say from the comments I have been reading on FB, Twitter, and other forums. They wanted all out Zombie's from the get go. That is not what this one is about.

I like the build up. We are seeing utter shock on peoples faces when they see "them" for the first time. At this point, the brain is having a tough time comprehending what is going on.

I think there need to be zombies in the show for most casual Walking Dead watchers to watch this, but I don't know why people were expecting zombie apocalypse immediately. This isn't a movie where we see normal turn to chaos in 10 minutes. I don't think the trailer gave off that impression either, but I only watched it once so I could be misremembering. To be honest, I could stand for them to go eve slower, but I know ratings would plummet if it dragged on too much because people appear to have misconceptions about the point if this show.

Not getting any better.
Can you expound? I looked to see if you had made a previous post in this thread so I could put your comment into context, but there was no previous post. I'm just curious as to what you think is lacking and therefore not improving.

I was a little concerned that things were moving too fast in this episode, but the ending changed all that. The plot seems to be taking a reasonable course. As I've previously posted about, I am hoping that we are going to learn more origin information about the cause and nature of the zombie apocalypse. Is it supernatural, viral, evolutionary, etc.. The natural tendency for folks is going to be to compare this new incarnation of the show with the original TWD television show, but I'm trying to appreciate it on its own. TWD is a survival story so I'm trying to view this one in a different manner. Is it a disaster story? A tragedy? I'm not sure yet, but just because it takes place in the same world as TWD I don't want to assume it's the same thing with just different characters.

There are two things I hate about this show (yet I'm still watching because I really want to see the downfall of society, something we missed in WD. I don't know how they are going to pull it off as we already know the military is in place and knows about the virus and how to kill the walkers. They aren't the fastest enemies at all so its going to take a big leap to show how the military can't just walk into a city and shoot every walker in the head.)

Anyway: 1. The show has the same beyond stupid moments that make me crazy when I watch TD (Beth's beyond ridiculous). For instance, (I'm bad with remembering names) when Patrick (? Asian man), comes home from his trip, he's just saying how the airport was closed and he had to drive the whole way home. WHAT?!? Every time we see a character driving, they are passing burning buildings, riots, soldiers, cops and the air is filled with military helicopters. He's seen none of this. He should be running into his house, screaming for his wife, are you ok? What's happening? etc etc. There are many more roll eyes moments like this.
But the big thing is: 2. I don't mind a slow burn for something new. But we know what's going to happen here. yes, its a surprise to the characters but not to the viewers. Three episodes before someone says, "they are dead." Well, duh, no big moment for us. That should have been the end of the first episode not three in. I don't like any character so I'm no invested in what happens to them. Just dumb people saying and doing dumb things (Hey that neighbor of mine obviously has some horrible disease, I've seen people still come at me after having half their face blow off but I'll stand within reaching distance of one of them, see if the fence breaks or what happens if they scratch me).
Next week is what I'm waiting for: the military push into the city. But I'm sure it will suck. I have no hope for this show especially since the second society collapses, its just a WD clone with horrible characters.

So it's more that you are expecting something that isn't what the show is really about. Of course we know these things, but that doesn't mean that within the storyline it would make sense to speed it all up--in fact it wouldn't. They are portraying the real world essentially, how would anyone in the real world come to the conclusion that they are dead given that it goes against any rational explanation of life that there is? Based on us watching zombie movies and suddenly crossing that barrier that complete fantasy can actually be reality? Most normal human beings take some time to cross a barrier that something real that they haven't really dealt with before can be reality, let alone that something completely irrational and from pure fantasy could be.

I hear you, but the show is still boring. We don't need to watch tv shows in real time, so to speak. Many movies or shows could be twice as long if the characters were led through their journey in a more realistic time frame. But they would be boring too. Maybe if this show came before the WD, it would be better, but like I said, when viewers already know what the end game is, three episodes (the first one super-sized) is just too drawn out for me. (How long were they in that barber shop? Part of one episode and a quarter, more or less, of another. I understand that they were scared to leave but we didn't need to see the hours tick by, especially since leaving earlier wouldn't have made a difference to the characters, they still were caught up in the riots, just time jump to later without showing us five scenes of them just talking...)

P.S. The holding on to patient zero or however they plan on telling us how this started on both shows is getting annoying. It can't possibly be such a huge stunning plot twist that the producers can keep us waiting for this long. If you are going to do a prequel, THAT should have been part of it. Now we have two shows with a big LOST like mystery and we call remember how that ended...

Well, I guess what I'm saying is that this show is about that experience of typical people as it all happens. Speeding up through it would be going against what the show is actually about--it's not about getting to the part of killing the walkers and running away from them (as a good part of The Walking Dead is about) and dealing with other people who are trying to survive, it's about how things progress in the early stages and how it's all perceived and dealt with. The pace is one of the main parts of the storyline basically as that is what it's about.

Well hopefully next week will be better for me. I'm giving the show a chance, I'll watch the first 8 episode until WD and decide then if I want to continue.

dumb people saying and doing dumb things

I'm enjoying the show but I have to agree with you about dumb people doing dumb things.

I also doubt we will ever see patient zero or the cause of the epidemic in either series.

I highly recommend the "Dark Tide Rising" series by John Ringo. In my opinion, it has the best explanation for the cause and spread of a zombie apocalypse.

Escape from downtown LA, the drive by the hospital, the lights of LA go out, nothing spectacular but solid atmosphere, IMO. I'm finding it watchable. :)

Regarding the story, how many ways can you kill a zombie and how many times can you watch a zombie get grievous injury to the head and still maintain interest? It's the survivors, not the zombies who provide the real meat of the story. I'm not trying to talk you into liking the show so far, but I don't feel critical about what I've seen to date. If you don't like the primary characters there is nothing to be said. However, regarding your critique... :)

There could have been some reports of rioting downtown. LA is a big place. What airport did he (the Asian neighbor) come from? He could of been oblivious since he was gone. We were on the way to, but not quite yet in the general state of emergency, although the entire city seemed to lose power at one point. Are all neighborhoods like the one they live in or are they just close to the rioting? Do they have masses of zombies walking the city? Even in their neighborhood we only saw 2 zombies. It still feels early and my impression is that zombies are not yet in abundance. At the end of this episode, it appears that authorities have become aware of the issue and the Army/Nationsl Guard has been called in. We know they arrive in this neighborhood, but I doubt they be able to occupy the entire city at once, and as we know another large city Atlanta became a no man's land.

Thinking about it logically, the threat that would allow a zombie apocalypse to get going are the complications caused by people. If we had our heads on straight, I think once the realization is made that all dead people are a threat, it could be controlled and not get out of hand. What screws that up are the living people who want to take advantage of the situation, like the rioters.

I think this last episode is the first time I have heard someone mention "Undead" when referencing the walkers.

I agree with @Huntn with the lights going out, the civil unrest. The build up is good and steady. Which is what I like. We only have three more episodes I believe for this season so it will be very interesting.

I also like the fact we are seeing the military coming in. I am wondering if we will get to the point of seeing the military going down or if we will be left with the cliff hanger after episode six.

Has anybody heard if this has been renewed for a second/continuation of the first season?

A second season was ordered pretty much right from the beginning, before the first one even aired (or was even shot if I recall correctly).

I totally agree. Even the WD has always been about the characters, not the zombies. It's like the first season of True Detective, it wasn't the crime that most people cared about, it was the journey of the main characters that we liked.

What I hated about that part was that the show made sure we showed how everything was going crazy in the big city and spreading to the rural area. And then you had this guy who drove for a day or two and saw nothing. Heard nothing on the radio, etc. Yeah, he could have been on side streets and listening to his ipod but it feels wrong. It's just dumb. I know that's an immature comment but its the only word that fits for me. Like Beth stabbing that cop. Not a heroic brace ending. Just dumb.
