I thought that asshat barton would apologize to apple for the american people being upset about this.

Maybe he should have been like president dumbo ears and just shake apple down for 20 billion while bypassing the court system.

Limited ability? How hard is typing oo.apple.com? Even without swype, it only took me a second or two.

Apple has been doing this since 2008. (According to the Washington Post article)

Did you know about oo.apple.com in 2008, 2009 or the first half of 2010? I didn't. I'm sure my GF still doesn't know.

I'd bet 80%+ don't know how to opt out.

If you say something is optional but don't let customers know how to opt out, I submit that it is not optional for the vast amount of users.

Apple has been unusually considerate of user privacy over the years. A far greater concern would be that any such information collected to improve iAd selectivity be misused by government agencies themselves subponeaing the information on a claim, no matter how valid of a pending criminal case. One should not be required to bring evidence against themselves, even if through personal property and subscribed services. Any such use should require the advance notice of the "owner" and a right of objection afforded in court.

Any such use found to be not permissible should subject any subsequent related evidence and claims to the legal principal of "fruit of the forbidden tree".

This should be a central tennet of EFF and ACLU and DoJ.

If I'm not mistaken, that only refers to the use of specific, targeted iAds and not all location and usage data.

Some of the responses to this post concern me a little:

1) Why attack politicians that are trying to actually do something productive for a change? Yes they have issues of their own, but personal attacks don't negate the fact that Apple is doing exactly what it says it stands against.

2) Just because other companies are collecting data on the regular doesn't mean that Apple is excused from doing it or shouldn't be investigated.

People who say such things are choosing to ignore the major issue.

I'm wonder if it's possible to opt back in. I'm curious what kinds of ads I would see in both situations. Maybe "opted in" ads would be more interesting and something I would like, who knows.

Doesn't the user have to grant permission for location services. if they dont grant permission apple wouldn't have any information to use.

Some of the questions:

  1. Which specific Apple products are being used by Apple to collect geographic location data?

  2. When did Apple begin collecting this location data, and how often is data collected from a given consumer?

  3. Does Apple collect this location data from all consumers using Apple products?

  4. How many consumers are subject to this collection of location data?

  5. What internal procedures are in place to ensure that any location data is stored anonymously in a form that does not personally identify individual consumers?

  6. Why did Apple decide to begin collecting location data at this time, and how does it intend to use the data?

  7. Is Apple sharing consumer location information collected through iPhones and iPads with AT&T or other telecommunications carriers?

  8. Who are the unspecified partners and licensees with which Apple shares this location data, and what are the terms and conditions of such information sharing?

  9. Does Apple believe that legal boilerplate in a general information policy is sufficient to inform the consumer that the consumer's location may be disclosed to other parties?
If they aren't doing anything shady they should have no trouble answering.

It'll be used for Apple to generate more revenue. You think that business you are diving by wouldn't pay top dollar to have their ad displayed on your phone?

I have a big issue with Apple collecting data from my phone without my knowledge. If I'm asked if an App can collect my geolocational data to provide a service, fine. Apple doing for "testing" or another reason is not ok.

I am not paying top dollar for hardware and software to be a beta tester.
I am not paying top dollar for hardware and software to be spied upon.

Apple needs to realize that when we buy a phone, it is not longer their hardware. It is ours.

What are they taking from you, where you are, what apps and music you like come on big deal. I have always said the same about even the Gov. getting info from cell providers and others "if you are not hiding anything what's the big deal" if it make our country safer and my hardware & software better then have at it, it's not that interesting and I'm hiding nothing. But if there is more to this that I'm missing please fill me in as I have an open mind........

Steve Jobs and Apple are way past becoming the new enemy. How anyone can try to spin this as Apple is still a god and can do no harm, then you are clinically insane.

Do they really think Apple is going to use this info for some kind of wrong doing, come guys I don't think Steve Jobs is into being a criminal. All the info will be used for is making great Hardware & Software better and of course the next big thing that we will love to play with. Seems like the feds are always looking into Apple's business, when you are on top they always want to bring you down.
Go ahead and take my info as I'm sure it will just make my Apple stuff perform better as usual!!!
GO STEVE!!!

Yes, yes, yes and I'm sure you would have agreed that Chancellor Hitler was just making Jews and Gypsies register their locations because he was concerned with their well-being!

The point is, that any information gathered WILL be misused at some point in time and misused to the detriment of the person(s) upon whom data has been gathered.

I agree Steve Jobs is one of the greatest CEOs in modern history. But he is not a 'nice' human being. Also, his fellow Apple Board Member and dear pal Al Gore, is still facing litigation for being a sex criminal. Apple Corp. itself is constantly being sued. Thus, I really don't want those guys, or Apple, or actually anybody to know much about me personally. Hey, that's why we all sign on the internet using cute pseudonyms.

Me thinks Google pulled some strings or put a bird in someone's ear to make this happen.
