Thanks for asking

I can imagine him firing off another curt email:

"Need the info to continue offering best user experience on the planet!"

sj
From my awesome iPhone

I'm a huge fan of Apple, but I don't like the idea of anybody knowing my whereabouts and my precise location and then deciding to share that information with whomever they please. That is nobody's business.

Better smash any smartphone you have then because it probably has GeoLocation enabled and has your Longitude and Latitude wherever you go.

While your at it. Stop using navigation software,Twitter etc.

I have to say I actually appreciate someone questioning this. The last thing I want is to start receiving push notifications or text messages when I drive past one of Apple's "partners and licensees" brick and mortar establishments. I'm not saying that's how the data will (or even can) be used, but the question is, is the verbiage open enough to allow that, and if so, should it be, whether that's the intention or not?

Do they really think Apple is going to use this info for some kind of wrong doing, come guys I don't think Steve Jobs is into being a criminal. All the info will be used for is making great Hardware & Software better and of course the next big thing that we will love to play with. Seems like the feds are always looking into Apple's business, when you are on top they always want to bring you down.
Go ahead and take my info as I'm sure it will just make my Apple stuff perform better as usual!!!
GO STEVE!!!

Another one of them mindless Apple drones, Steve did a great job, I must hand him that.

Yes, yes, yes and I'm sure you would have agreed that Chancellor Hitler was just making Jews and Gypsies register their locations because he was concerned with their well-being!

The point is, that any information gathered WILL be misused at some point in time and misused to the detriment of the person(s) upon whom data has been gathered.

I agree Steve Jobs is one of the greatest CEOs in modern history. But he is not a 'nice' human being. Also, his fellow Apple Board Member and dear pal Al Gore, is still facing litigation for being a sex criminal. Apple Corp. itself is constantly being sued. Thus, I really don't want those guys, or Apple, or actually anybody to know much about me personally. Hey, that's why we all sign on the internet using cute pseudonyms.

+1 for Godwin.

INVESTIGATE! Those terms and conditions are 45 pages long now - how many average users are going to realize their data is being shared without their consent?

But it IS being shared with their consent. The quoted paragraph from Apple's privacy policy- ignore what the article says, because it's full of hyperbole-is referring to sharing your location with third parties when you grant them permission through the Location Sharing dialog box so that their applications can do what you want them to.

Be careful. Logic doesn't work in these forums.;)

Better smash any smartphone you have
Or turn it off (and remove battery) when you don't want to be available. If you're the incorrigible "but I'm so important that I must always be available!" invention of the '90s, get a pager and/or over yourself.

then because it probably has GeoLocation enabled and has your Longitude and Latitude wherever you go.
But is it recorded? And to whom is data sent?

Stop using navigation software
As above. Although "stop using closed source navigation software" isn't necessarily bad advice.

Twitter etc.
This goes without saying...

what bout google and RIM

Given that you can opt out of the Apple iAd program, and that it's sole purpose it to provide contextual, location based ads, only the advertising experience is degraded if you opt-out of location sharing, not the application or hardware experience.

Now with Android, on the other hand, Google's whole revenue stream is dependent on advertising and location sharing has no opt-out. 1 in 5 apps on Android send private user data beyond location sharing back to the server.

With Blackberry, the BES routes all user information and location through a single NOC and no one is complaining.

It is most likely the opt-out and the warning that location data is being shared on the iPhone that has the govs hackles up... if Apple just secretly collected the data like google and rim, no one would be making a fuss.

Maybe the feds want in on the location services to track our every move! Now where did I put that tinfoil hat?

[snip]

But is it recorded? And to whom is data sent?

Go download this movie a member posted about how cool the HD video is on the new iPhone 4.
Open it in Quicktime and look at the inspector. You will notice a little arrow. Click on that arrow and you will see the front door of the person that posted the video.

You can thank Google Maps for that btw.;)

Important!!!

go to oo.apple.com from your iPhone to Opt Out. (important that it's from your phone)

Simple and painless.... and yes, I agree that this data collection is wrong, and people should complain... but at least protect yourself in the meantime by opting out. It takes less than 10 seconds.

It doesn't work on my iPhone 4 or my 3G when that was activated.

Are you serious, you want to compare Apple to Hitler, I guess it's me that's way off base?

Not exactly. I was hoping you could 'extrapolate' my example to see how Apple could be dragged into terribly misusing private information.

Remember J. Edgar Hoover? He ran the FBI and wow, did he run it with great evil intent! Picture a future 'Hoover' having several FBI agents showing up at Apple and asking (demanding) cooperation in a highly classified operation to identify and track enemies of the United States with Apple's corporate data. Bingo! Off we go on hell's highway of privacy invasion and yet another 'secret list' being made.

I've probably been around a lot longer than you and I'm not saying I'm smarter. I'm just pointing out from my observation and sad experience what can happen when a data bank of personal information on citizens starts being maintained and is subsequently misused, hacked or stolen for other than original purposes.

I may be in the minority, but I don't have or use any smartphones. I have a piece of crap cheap phone that I only use occasionally, and it only does one thing, make calls, and it works fine for that purpose. It probably makes better calls than the iphone, since I'm not on AT&T.:D

I also don't use any navigation software and I definitely don't twitter.

I just did it.

To opt-out of iAds on a device running iOS 4, you must enter the following address into the device's web browser:
Using your device information to opt out of a service that uses your device information. Is that ironic?

(I realize that it's the only logical way to do it...)

Godwin's Law. First person to invoke a comparison to Hitler in an argument loses.

Good day sir.
