Yes, yes, yes and I'm sure you would have agreed that Chancellor Hitler was just making Jews and Gypsies register their locations because he was concerned with their well-being!

The point is, that any information gathered WILL be misused at some point in time and misused to the detriment of the person(s) upon whom data has been gathered.

I agree Steve Jobs is one of the greatest CEOs in modern history. But he is not a 'nice' human being. Also, his fellow Apple Board Member and dear pal Al Gore, is still facing litigation for being a sex criminal. Apple Corp. itself is constantly being sued. Thus, I really don't want those guys, or Apple, or actually anybody to know much about me personally. Hey, that's why we all sign on the internet using cute pseudonyms.

Are you serious, you want to compare Apple to Hitler, I guess it's me that's way off base?

What are they taking from you, where you are, what apps and music you like come on big deal. I have always said the same about even the Gov. getting info from cell providers and others "if you are not hiding anything what's the big deal" if it make our country safer and my hardware & software better then have at it, it's not that interesting and I'm hiding nothing. But if there is more to this that I'm missing please fill me in as I have an open mind........

A few points.

No one is saying it is limited to music, apps and location. Whose to say they aren't looking at my web history?

They know how long I spend in a particular area. That information can be obtained by many third-parties.

Are you willing to risk your employer, signifiant other, mother knowing where you are all the time? What webpages you visit? What apps you download and music you listen to? (What if those people work at Apple or "their partners?"

Should a potential employer be allowed to find out the Apps you download? What if I downloaded an App to network with other people in AA? I wouldn't be comfortable with a potential employer knowing that information about me. (What if the potential employer is Apple?)

Are you comfortable with the government knowing all those things?

Historically, corporations and governments given access to some of our data they tend to want more. Should the govn't be able to collect biometric data? What about your DNA sequence?

Don't you feel you should be able to control who has this information about you?

Follow the money first

The first thing I'd do is check to see how much money these idiots receive in bribes, er, I mean "campaign contributions," from Google and any other anti-Apple group.

Even more interesting is that these two are both up for re-election this year. How transparent. Grab some issues from the headlines, align with them, and ignore the real problems in life, e.g. Google.

I agree 100% with your post but you do realize Google and every other handset maker does the same thing don't you ?

At least admit that it is possible for a tyrannical government to come to power and access all this wonderful data Apple has collected and stored.

Would Apple allow China to access this information, if they said it was a requirement of using their manufacturing facilities?

I am not paying top dollar for hardware and software to be a beta tester.
I am not paying top dollar for hardware and software to be spied upon.

you'll need to pretty much go back to 7 simple tools if you don't want to be a beta tester or spied upon in this day and age. you'll also need to give up credit cards, debit cards, the internet, your dvr, you cell phone regardless of how smart or dumb it is.

simple fact software of even marginal complexity will ship with bugs and missing features that only wide spread usage will uncover. there is no perfect beta test.

every web site you visit tracks your ip, your general location, time spent on the site, etc… and that's the simple ones. complex, commerce based sites like amazon collect significantly more information.

and that's not even delving in the conspiracy theories with things like echelon, always on mics in cell phones, e911 tracking. (not saying i believe in any of those, just saying the theory exists)

"spying" is simply a truth of the modern world if you want the conveniences afforded by technology.

as i understand it though you can globally opt-out of the "spying" and per-app based on clicking the "this app wants to use your location"

What does that have to do with anything?

I didn't know we were talking about Google and privacy issues -- we are talking about Apple. All of these comments about other companies doing the same thing adds nothing to the conversation and obviously doesn't change the fact that Apple shouldn't be doing this.

This is idiotic, and I see no reference to iAds in the article.

The clause that the LA Times is quoting is referring to the use of Location Services.

When you hit OK to provide a third party app Location Services, you're allowing a third party to access your personal information.
Duh.

Did anyone actually read Apple's license agreement? The "offending" paragraph is:

To provide location-based services on Apple products, Apple and our partners and licensees may collect, use, and share precise location data, including the real-time geographic location of your Apple computer or device. This location data is collected anonymously in a form that does not personally identify you and is used by Apple and our partners and licensees to provide and improve location-based products and services. For example, we may share geographic location with application providers when you opt in to their location services.

This isn't Apple collecting data. This is Apple warning you, "Hey, when you hit Yes to the prompt, you're letting a third party access your location for whatever purpose their application uses it for", and a paranoid journalist and paranoid public misreading it and freaking out.

Shoddy journalism at its finest.

The best part is the article's updates. David Sarno wrote:
"However, there's nothing to indicate that these settings prevent Apple itself from gathering and storing location data from Apple devices. "

There's nothing in the quoted paragraph ABOUT Apple storing the data!

They're probably a couple of lawmakers who are having affairs.

Rumor is that Barny Frank has joined in!

I for one is glad to see this looked into. I HATE advertising no matter what!

Have yous noticed all the apps lately when reading update info, now included is ads! The Internet is whored enough by these advertisers, let alone now on your phone, your iPad and your computer!

Now for all of you that love ads, have at it! You must be in heaven. ;)

We're not talking about Apps using GPS data to direct your driving. We're talking about Apple using this data to sell ads, sharing the info with third parties and do "other" things.

I agree 100% with your post but you do realize Google and every other handset maker does the same thing don't you ?

I'm not so sure they share it with other people. Cell tower location is different from GPS location too. About a 300 foot difference. Enough to be at the library and not the strip club. (At least in my fictional town.)

Points well taken but let me remind you the way I live my life I really don't care what they look at as I'm don't have anything to hide or that is of any great interest. However I don't like the idea as you said about if it's used against you and or if a third party gets it, that I don't like I want to control who I let look at it.
But if we think that it's not already being watched by big brother we would all be fools as well as others. People that want it will get it.

I am not paying top dollar for hardware and software to be spied upon.

Apple needs to realize that when we buy a phone, it is not longer their hardware. It is ours.

INVESTIGATE! Those terms and conditions are 45 pages long now - how many average users are going to realize their data is being shared without their consent?
At least someone is looking into this, wether it be Barton or whoever.

On a separate note - BP SHOULD BE PAYING FOR EVERYTHING RELATED TO THIS SPILL - THERE SHOULD BE NO NEED FOR FUND RAISERS AND DONATIONS. THESE BASTARDS SHOULD PAY 100% of PROJECTED DAMAGES!

Limited ability? How hard is typing oo.apple.com? Even without swype, it only took me a second or two.

Problem: It doesn't work for me at least. It keeps on saying I don't have iOS 4 and I think my iPhone has iOS 4 considering it's an iPhone 4. Don't think it can run on an earlier iOS. ;)

Perhaps I should have made my statement very simple.So...

AdMob does the same thing. Why aren't THEY being asked these questions also ?

I'm a huge fan of Apple, but I don't like the idea of anybody knowing my whereabouts and my precise location and then deciding to share that information with whomever they please. That is nobody's business.

Important!!!

go to oo.apple.com from your iPhone to Opt Out. (important that it's from your phone)

Simple and painless.... and yes, I agree that this data collection is wrong, and people should complain... but at least protect yourself in the meantime by opting out. It takes less than 10 seconds.

I take those points to heart and you are right. However, I have a counter point.

Submitting bug reports and requests for new features is a far cry from what we're talking about. Apple is going into my phone and taking this data without my permission. I can proactively submit requests.

Also - I can always use a proxy server if I'm concerned about webpages.

I recently listened to a rant by some semi-relevant local guy to the effect: "Privacy is dead. Live with it."

I wondered what he really meant. I pondered for a while about what it meant.

Then I worked it out what it meant: "Privacy awareness is dying. Now shut up before people start listening to you, and bend over."

I politely declined, and it made me want to shout even louder.

All oppression up to now has eventually failed because no government can track every man all the time, stopping him before he becomes a threat. Enjoy your privacy, not because giving it up will kill you now, but because you're asking for an environment which will hurt you or your descendents before the century is half way done.
