Go download this movie a member posted about how cool the HD video is on the new iPhone 4.
Open it in Quicktime and look at the inspector. You will notice a little arrow. Click on that arrow and you will see the front door of the person that posted the video.

You can thank Google Maps for that btw.;)

Is that Quicktime X? D/led it and nothing in the Inspector.

Godwin's Law. First person to invoke a comparison to Hitler in an argument loses.

Well, then let's use Stalin, Mao, Idi Amin or George W. Bush instead. Different faces and names, but basically all the same.

It's impossible to have Freedom without Privacy.

What a dumb thing to say, especially coming from a German. Bush is great! and he has nothing in common with those other leftist dictators which you mentioned.

Yes, Data's Already Being Collected

you'll need to pretty much go back to 7 simple tools if you don't want to be a beta tester or spied upon in this day and age. you'll also need to give up credit cards, debit cards, the internet, your dvr, you cell phone regardless of how smart or dumb it is.

simple fact software of even marginal complexity will ship with bugs and missing features that only wide spread usage will uncover. there is no perfect beta test.

every web site you visit tracks your ip, your general location, time spent on the site, etc… and that's the simple ones. complex, commerce based sites like amazon collect significantly more information.

and that's not even delving in the conspiracy theories with things like echelon, always on mics in cell phones, e911 tracking. (not saying i believe in any of those, just saying the theory exists)

"spying" is simply a truth of the modern world if you want the conveniences afforded by technology.

as i understand it though you can globally opt-out of the "spying" and per-app based on clicking the "this app wants to use your location"

You've pretty much hit the nail on the head as far as data collection. In my case, I may not want my location associated with me (the person), but I do like the idea of location based services such as closest restaurants, gas stations, electronic coupons/deals (mention this code, etc.), basically adverts.

Unintended consequences...

Do they really think Apple is going to use this info for some kind of wrong doing, come guys I don't think Steve Jobs is into being a criminal.

Do you think BP really wanted Deepwater Horizon catastrophe to happen?
Problem is, even if BP went bankrupt over cleanup it's not going to get us the Gulf back the way it was, ever.

Google has been doing this for a while now. But they decide to go after Apple? Seriously, the anti-Apple zealot keep pegging Apple as 'big-brother', but it's Google that's the real 'big-brother'.

And I think it's fine. Google uses the data they collect for traffic information on their maps. Hopefully Apple is using the information for a Google Maps competitor.

Finaly

It'll be used for Apple to generate more revenue. You think that business you are diving by wouldn't pay top dollar to have their ad displayed on your phone?

I have a big issue with Apple collecting data from my phone without my knowledge. If I'm asked if an App can collect my geolocational data to provide a service, fine. Apple doing for "testing" or another reason is not ok.

I am not paying top dollar for hardware and software to be a beta tester.
I am not paying top dollar for hardware and software to be spied upon.

Apple needs to realize that when we buy a phone, it is not longer their hardware. It is ours.

Agree completely.
Could not have said it better.
Stop this rubbish no company has the right to do this whoever they may be.

I wonder if the letter will be delivered by gun toting LEO's who will proceed to knock down Steve Jobs door? Oh wait, I think it will be delivered in a calm and rational method, w/o the use of guns, since that is how civilized people behave.

I'm happy that people are beginning to take note of the power grab that Apple has been doing, something that would have made Microsoft blush in comparison.

Amazing, isn't it? We use Google Mail, Google Maps, Google search, a Google browser. Some people are using a Google mobile OS, and soon a Google desktop OS. We're talking to people via Google Talk and Google Chat. We're collaborating via Google Wave. All these free services. Why free? Because Google is collecting information about you so it can sell targeted advertising.

Where is the sense of panic?

Truly incredible that everyone is worried about the mouse in the corner (Apple) when it comes to personal info and completely ignoring the elephant in the room (Google). Google has pulled off a major PR coup in this regard.

question: how many people who know about this, and know about oo.apple.com, will choose NOT to opt out? If the number is a minority, e.g. less than 50%, than you have to assume the right thing to do is make it "opt in" vs. "opt out."

Honestly, there are very few things in life I actually want to be automatically opt'ed into. Usually, the requirement to "opt out" means there is something that is benefiting someone else and therefore they have a great interest in trying to get as many people involved as possible.

The greatest problem with any of this is that most consumers don't understand technology enough to make the right decisions. Everyone from 10 years old to 100 years old is using Facebook, iPhones, etc... but how many truly understand cyber security/privacy/etc. issues?

It seems wrong to say that the answer is for these people to have their Internet access turned off and their cell phone service terminated. But, it might be coming to that if the Apples, Googles, and Facebooks of the world turn completely evil.

Sounds like someone isn't very well read on Microsoft's documented (thanks to courts all over the world) business practices...

Apple being upfront with users, gets punished.

And before anyone says, "But the app requests permission to use location information!" ask yourself this: If I ask to borrow your lawnmower, would you assume that I'm asking for it today / this weekend, or every 15 minutes for the next 3 months? Which does Apple assume?

Apple is asking for it forever for that one application, or until you 'take it back' by going to the locations settings and turn it off again. And whenever that application is using GPS data, a little compass arrow shows up in the app's header.

Nothing to see here, move along. ;)

Welcome to the world outside conspiracy theorists:

IMO, services that could reveal personal information about a user should always be an opt-in service, not the other way around.

Glad the govmt is checking it out.

Google gives me stuff for free (so to speak). Apple gives me bugger all for my info. I am cheap and that is why I opted out. :p

Quit being a fanboy for 5 seconds and smell the reality.
The same argument was made by Google and everyone wanted their balls in a sling over their data collection.
The fact is none of us know what is being collected, who will see it and how will it be used.
And the biggie of them all... how is the data being protected?
I find it a bit disturbing.

Hold on, hold on . . . Nope, I tried. Can't quit being a fanboy lol. However I concur with the point you make completely. As a matter of fact (and not to get all conspiracy theory on ya) could be a cover for the " LAWMAKERS " to get the info from Apple that THEY want, since Apple is actually in the position to get the info so easily lol and legally. :D
